August 7, 2013 - Korean sinawi music originally accompanied propitiatory rites presided over by a female shaman, or mudang. The word sinawi is also synonymous with musical improvisation based on various rhythmic and melodic devices--the most important characteristic of this genre. This group of sinawi performed by five performers and varying instrumentation evokes the otherworldly sonic space of the shamanistic spirit realm. Dr. Ju-Yong Ha, a renowned ethnomusicologist, will provide historical context for the performances, shedding light on the tradition and its transition to the modern music world.
Ensemble SINAWI
SHIN Hyunsik (Ajaeng), HA Sera (Gayagŭm), LEE Bong-guen (Vocal), Kim Jinhyuck (Percussion), JEONG Songhee (Yanggŭm)
Guest performers
Cita Chay (Violin)
Chung-Eun Han (Daegeum)
Produced, Directed, and Edited by Peter Stuehmke.

As he played the Ajaeng,.. I could hear my grandmother’s voice chanting during her trance ceremonies when she was a Mudang. It was 1974 when we visited her at her home in Tongduchun, I was 7 years old and it was a really strange experience!!

I deeply appreciate this music and thank all of you for the great work. I come from Persian background. I wanted to hear original Korean tunes and tempo with modern technology and arrangement, while it is keeping its originality. And this as it. I did hear the Silk road affect and imprint. I detected everything from Greece to Persia to China and finally to Korea, while the identity is Korean. thanks again. Greetings from north California , February 2020. Best wishes. If ''I '' liked it , then it must be great, lol.

A very new experience for me. It took me a long while before I began to appreciate it because the sounds, tones, arrangement were quite different to anything I've heard before. I would understand if some people got into some sort of trance whilst listening to it. A most interesting musical experience for me. Thank you.

What is the large plucked instrument the Korean woman is playing called? It looks like a Japanese (Nihon, Nippon) Koto. . The Japanese call their country Nippon or Nihon. Land of the Rising Sun. The Koreans also have a small plucked instrument which is similar in sound.

김정엽 Money should not always be a guiding factor. Musicians can play traditional instruments for the love of their country, and for the tremendous musical talents they have.

Michael, hear my opinion: I believe the musician should be free to use any ''INSTRUMENT'' or build and invent her own; as long as her music has an identity and of course, people like it. Civilizations add to each other. I see the Pipa Instruments that is being played in China is no more in use in Central Asia, where it came from. Guitar, Spanish, Taar , Persian and Seetaar Indian have same root. ( Taar in Persian means String of Hair). Greetings from north California.
