When my grandfather was alive, he would often get samplers of all sorts of liquor: bourbon, whiskey, rum, vodka. He would have a briefcase full of these samplers, and he would just give them all away to people he knew: Friends, family, even cashiers that he saw regularly. When he passed, we had tray full of those samplers next to his casket with a sign that said “Have one on Chuck.” Seeing this video kind of reminded me of that story.

To be fair, a lot of Americans react similarly the very first time they try bourbon straight. It's an acquired taste. The guy in the blue shirt either knew what to expect or he's tougher than your average bear. I do enjoy a good bourbon, neat, but didn't so much when I first had some. Edit - Donghyun

Actually, bourbon is not fermented within the final aging barrel. It is fermented within a different barrel, distilled, then aged within a charred oak barrel. Fun fact, every batch of bourbon has to be made with a freshly charred barrel, as barrels cannot be reused. This is where the very high amounts of oak flavor come from. Also, bourbon is more like the Soju of America. The Makgeolli of America is more like Napa valley wine.

My favorite bourbon, Woodford Reserve, is a little pricey. It has more of a warm vanilla flavor. Everyone thinks I'm a heathen, but I like to mix it with orange juice. It tastes like a creamsicle!

we dont mix it with tonic water, but we do mix it with soda water... some people mix it with coca cola & ice... you can also mix it with ice, lime juice, sugar,and egg white. Which is called a "whiskey sour", or you can make a "manhattan" by mixing it with vermouth, or make an "old fashioned" by mixing it with sugar, bitters, soda water, ice, and then add an orange slice & whole cherry..... there are lots of great bourbon and whiskey drinks

"I feel alive!" 😂 There's a Bourbon drinker for you. I actually do like Jim Beam, but I don't like Jack Daniels. Personal taste I guess. The Jim Beam distillery is only a few miles away from me, so that might be an influence. When I first moved to Korea I tried makgeolli and it was afwul. But I soon discovered that what I had tried was the cheapest junk on the market. I tried good makgeolli about a year later, and it was quite good. But it was unfair to tell these people that Bourbon is the makgeolli of the US, since they expected it to be smooth. Bourbon has a burn that does take some getting used to.

Wild Turkey with Coca-Cola was the first non-beer alcoholic drink I actually liked the first time I had it. I recommend mixing with either that, or ginger ale, if you don't want to try it straight out of the bottle. Now, I can't one-shot the glass like Donghyun, but I can at least sip on a nice bourbon and not do the fire-breathing thing right after. Bourbon really grows on you... but that's probably the booze talking!

I should correct you: Bourbon doesn't ferment in the barrels, the fermentation period is when the initial alcohol is created through the yeast consuming the grains. When it's aged in new charred oak barrels it's "aged".

Buffalo Trace is a good one to start with, it's light, more aromatic and some defined sweetness. As they go up to pricier bourbon's, then they can begin to understand the complexity of each. Woodford and the Woodford reserve are the 2 others I've tried. Jack Daniels is harsh, I've tried that several times. The Bulleit Bourbon has a higher amount of rye in it's mash, which can make it more spicy or 'medicine' for some tastes

Wild Turkey 101 is an absolute delight to drink. I particularly like the caramel notes. Jim Beam and Evan Williams run a close second.

I just want to say "Thank You!" For being one of the only channels that finally gave their drinkers a taste of actual good bourbon in Buffalo Trace. Most channels just go for whatever is easily available. You gave them an authentic taste of a very good bourbon. Thank you.

For the Ladies... Try mixing the Bourbon with ginger ale or a sprite soda over ice. Makes the taste so much better if you drink Bourbon with a juice or soda mix over ice.

It doesnt ferment in barrels, its a distilled spirit when its put in barrels. It slowly absorbs the woody taste

Great that they had Buffalo Trace in the line up. Considering the outrageous whiskey prices in Korea, that bottle costed between 60-80,000 won. Beam and Jack was probably 35-50,000 each, and the Bulliet Burbon was probably 40-50,000 won. Overall, great episode!

The reason the Buffalo Trace was different is because its a 'Wheated' Bourbon..its finished with Wheat rather than the typical Rye so usually has softer notes and is generally considered to have a smoother finish.

When I was stationed in Korea (American Soldier), Koreans loved our liquor (and our cigarettes). My understanding was import tariffs made it much more expensive than just buying it on post. We went so far as to just randomly share liquor shots with unknown ajushis on the subway. Good times. I'd be happy to share shots with any KATUSA I served with.

This is pretty illustrative of the general public’s response to drinking in general: 4 out of 5 people say “ugh that’s awful” and the 5th person says “I feel so alive!”.

When I saw this title, I knew what was coming. When I was in Korea, I had a Korean friend of mine offer me some apple Soju. She told me "it's very strong!" When I drank it, I thought it was a joke. I couldn't even taste any alcohol. I thought it was water. it had almost no taste. I thought, ok these people have never had the hard shit we have in the US. I'm going to enjoy watching this.

Sorry kids, but I'm from Kentucky and that James Beam is mid to bottom shelf bourbon. Kind of like Evan Williams green label. Get yourself some Four Roses, Heaven Hill, or even better stuff. Ezra Brooks or Basil Hayden's (which I find wonderful). It's a lot smoother and more friendly to being sipped. Another surprisingly inexpensive but good bourbon is Very Old Barton. Other whiskeys are also good. Certain grades of Old Elk will set you back $80 USD to close to $180 USD, but it's like sipping bourbon flavored Koolaid. So smooth it sneaks up on you then all of a sudden you can't stand up from your chair.

She was right thinking water would smooth it. 'Bourbon & branch' (water) used to be a common drink for that reason. Now many people order a bourbon on the rocks (ice) knowing it takes time to 'steep', in other words, for the ice to melt and provide the small amount of water necessary to adjust the flavor to their preference. Also, a lot of new bourbon drinkers prefer it in mixed drinks, the simplest would be the Bulleit with a splash of Coke - they really work well together.

That line-up is interesting....the Beam, Jack and Bullleit are all pretty strong and "unrefined" or "hot" and the Buffalo Trace is SO much smoother than the other 3.

Trying to drink bourbon neat is usually something you have to learn. At first, the burn is overpowering, but eventually you get to a point where you learn how to drink it (like literally the way you sip and swallow) and get used to it where you don't even notice it anymore. That is the point when you can really start appreciating it instead of tolerating it. I recommend a process to get to that point. 1) Weak mixed drink (like whisky & soda) to get an idea about the flavor. 2) Take that same mixed drink and make it stronger until you get to a point of really tasting the alcohol, maybe until its equal parts mix and alcohol. 3) Switch over the mix to water. This way you are getting a really diluted drink that is still a low percentage, but has no flavors besides that of the alcohol. 4) Reduce the amount of water in each drink slowly until its just a bit of water with the alcohol. 5) Give them the alcohol with just ice. Let the ice melt a bit, but not completely. Drink it cold. It will take the sting away a bit but gets you used to the method of drinking. 6) Serve it straight. At first, don't worry about tasting, just drinking. After a few times drinking it straight, you get used to it and can move on to the next step. 7) Enjoy!

Off camera comment (3:27) "That medicinal smell comes from fermenting in an oak barrel." No! It ferments before it is distilled, then put in new charred oak barrels to age. Many people associate alcohol with a medicinal smell.

as someone from the US, I'm honestly not a bourbon fan at all. my preference is for clean, flavorless, high proof alcohols that don't leave an aftertaste, OR a nice amaretto, maybe a coconut rum.

Me, currently living in Korea, who drinks whiskey neat only: heh this is funny But to say bourbon is the makgeoli of america was a bit misleading. I love Makgeoli but it’s like a softer and sweeter sake, recently fermented. Bourbon is distilled so it’s gonna be like 10x harsher

Need to try the black version of Jim Beam, Crown Royal, Captain Morgan and what other one of the same. They're called black because the barrels they're aged in, have been burnt before they are filled. Which brings out some many other flavors of the originals.

I hope someone who appreciates it took home that buffalo trace. It's impossible to find and really good for the price.

Had Soju for the first time with a Korean friend I made in Seattle. We went for BBQ/Beer/Soju at his favorite local restaurant. It was a really good time. Best way I can describe it was vodka without the serious burning afterwards. If I still drank I would happily have Soju again. Korean BBQ I will eat anytime :> There is a serious novelty to grilling your own food in the middle of the table. Never had an experience like it! And the flavors were superb!

Hey guys! I’m from USA, Alabama. Concerning her comment about an American trying Soju and not liking it…i’d say that I like soju a lot! I’ve also had Makgeolli and I REALLY liked it! Love seeing how different cultures react to different things :)

The higher the proof (percentage times 2) the more distinctive the taste, usually. It comes from the barrel at a high alcohol content (with full flavor) and is watered down to the 40 to 50 per cent that you usually see by literally adding water. This lessens both the alcohol and the flavor. This is the reason that people seek out high-proof and barrel-proof bottles, for the full flavor and not the higher alcohol. A VERY common and simple mixed drink in the US is Bourbon (or Rye, my preference) and Ginger Ale. 2 oz whiskey plus ice in a glass and add ginger ale to top it off. Vary the size of the glass for how strong you want the drink. Other people might like Bourbon and apple cider. Too sweet for me, although I (hypothetically) drank that when I was too young to drink about 45 years ago. Then again there were times back then I (hypothetically) drank Jack straight from the bottle while (hypothetically) cruising around in a car with friends while (not hypothetically) not driving. I (hypothetically) liked whiskey before beer.

She said Jack cleared her nose. That's why I drink Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey. Tastes good and good for colds! I only drink flavored Soju. The plain/original tastes like turpentine or cod liver oil.

Jack Daniels isn't Bourbon, it is Tennessee Sipping Whiskey. The difference is that Bourbon goes strait from the still to a charred oak barrel to be aged (not fermented), while Tennessee Sipping Whiskey is filtered through charcoal before it is barreled. This process is called mellowing and it removes organic impurities from the spirit giving it a smoother flavor. Jack Daniels filters their whiskey through approximately three meters of sugar maple charcoal before it is put up to age.

Thank you for the laughs this morning! Hard alcohol like bourbon is a rough go to the uninitiated. I love hearing the Kingsmen reference. Fifteen minutes into Golden Circle I wanted to gave a glass of bourbon to nurse until the end of the movie, although the movie did turn me off of hamburgers. It was also interesting how some people can pick out the nuanced differences between bourbons and some can't. I found I fall into that latter group. I'll drink Evan Williams, a very inexpensive bourbon once or twice a year. I've also had Buffalo Trace (my one sister's favorite) and Bulleit (my brother's favorite) and I couldn't pick up the smoothness both siblings found in their favorite bourbons. The company that mades Buffalo Trace used to make Ancient Ancient Age; Buffalo Trace is just a close second. You take a good swig out of the bottle then chase it down with a swig of Sundrop “yellow cap only”.

It's hurts me that so many people don't know the proper way to sip bourbon, You take a sip, allow it to sit in your mouth and then swish your tongue gently up and down, aerating the liquor. It becomes much smoother to drink and more flavorful

I enjoyed the video but i do have one complaint.... Jack Daniel's isn't a bourbon, that beautiful bottle is a Tennessee whiskey. I was glad to see them try it purely because it's a classic American whiskey but it's not bourbon =)

As an Murican. Soju likes to play the long game, the rice and alcohol smell are very sharp but over all its a great flavor and drink. but nothing beats bourbon

I think Koreans would enjoy a sweet cocktail like an Old Fashion. Stir simple syrup, bourbon, a dash of aromatic bitters, a sliver of orange peel and a ripe cherry together in a glass with ice.

When in Korea, I tried a drink called Captain Q, is tasted like burnt wood, and was about the same as drinking 151 rum, so it worked much better as a mix than drinking straight
