Really love these synths but the complexity of learning how to use them is insane--ESPECIALLY Korg. It really helps if you know someone who already knows but you probably won't know anybody who can help you. These videos really help.

Dave, Korg should employ you - these were their instructions to me: Load the WAV file onto the KRONOS from DISK mode Go to sampling mode, adjust the settings (if at all needed) and then use the “Convert MS to Program” option from the command menu to create a new program using this sample Go to DISK mode again and select the “Save” tab Select the “Save Sampling Mode Data” command from the Page Command Menu and give it a name that makes sense to you. Once completed, you will have a file called “whatevername.KSC”, another called “whatevername_UserBank.KSC” and a folder containing your sample(s) (in the KORG “KSF” format) Go to the “Load” (still in DISK mode) and load the “whatevername_UserBank.KSC” file remembering to select the “Clear Sampling Mode data” option, so that it will unload everything that was previously loaded onto the RAM and only stream the files directly from the SSD You can now also enable the “Auto-load” option for this new “whatevername_UserBank.KSC” in Global mode, under the “KSC Auto-Load” tab Still in Global mode, select the “Basic” tab in Global mode and the “Write Global Setting” command from the Page Command Menu Your newly created program should now always be ready to play when you start up the KRONOS, just as it if was a factory sound.

Yeah, unfortunately their instructions tend to assume you know a LOT of the interface and underlying principals already. Also not every Korg user is coming from a similar Korg product. I came from Kurzweil before Korg and had to learn a lot of new ideas to make things make sense. Technically their instructions aren't wrong. It's just convoluted to understand if you have no good frame of reference.

Hello Dave. This video tutorial(even with your bad camera quality as you said) was very very helpful. The display takes of the camera are OK, sometimes you miss to show what button of the keyboard you are pressing, we can hear you are pressing a button but you dont say what button is(:P). Besides that the video is just great. Sometimes the KRONOS manual is not that clear and is very long to read with complex nomenclature and concepts that the average Joe cannot understand. I personally want to thank you for posting this video and making it entertaining at the same time, that in my view is a challenge. I followed your steps and it worked perfectly. You should set up the donation tool somewhere, you save us time and make us laugh. That should be rewarded. I hope you are doing well and be safe at this difficult pandemic time in the world. Remember, whenever you create an MS and edit a stereo sample for example lets say you create an MS Crazy. The Kronos will create actually TWO MSs, one with -L and one with -R. They are actually 2 MSs but the Kronos sees them as one. So whenever you EDIT your MS Crazy -L the Korg Kronos will automatically do what you did for the MS Crazy -L to the MS Crazy -R. Also, the first 2 Multsamples that is default for Kronos you will not be able to add any samples to them and edit them across the zones. I have never figured out why but IMHO opinion it has to be a bug. So I just create new MSs starting with 3-4 then so on.

Hey David, thanks again for help with sampling. One issue I'm having when saving my multisamples is that whenever I create a new MS and save it, the Kronos duplicates all other previous saved MS. i.e. If I have my MS saved as so: 001-L&R Uptown Funk 002-L&R Living On A Prayer ...And then build another MS and save it as in the steps of this video, I now have: 001-L&R Uptown Funk 002-L&R, Living on A Prayer 003-L&R Uptown Funk 004-L&R Living on A Prayer 005-L&R New MS And this repeats each time I create and save a new MS. Hope this isn't too confusing;) Thanks again for your help!!!

It really looks as though you're re-loading the multisamples every time which you shouldn't need to do. Think of your KSC file as your own personal expansion library. Once it's loaded, you can save files to it and when you're done adding everything, you only need to save it. If you reload it without hitting the "Clear user samples" and instead load using "Append" you're going to see duplication. Append looks for the next free space and loads the samples in there. If you're reloading the samples to make sure they're showing up properly, choose the "Clear user samples" instead and see if that helps!

Hi. Great video. On the "Sample Edit" and "Loop Edit" page, is there any way to scrub through the sampled waveform, or some kind of rolling playhead that shows which part of the waveform is being played? Specifically I'm wanting to find where to end my waveform with as little guess work. Finding a start point is a tiny bit of guess work, although very easy. However, finding an end point in a little more complicated waveform has me having to listen to the whole waveform (or at least wherever I add the start point) in order to get to the end point. Thanks.

Hello Dave, you do an interesting comparison between Combi/Prog and MultiSample/Sample. In a combi we can set the Prog along the Keyb, as we do with samples. But what about velocity ? In a combi, we can set the velocity range for each Prog. How to do that with Samples inside the MultiSample ? thanks.

Hili David..Thanks for the video !! Please guide me when i load sample into my Kronos disc, and after going to sampling, does it automatically assign samples to all the keys pitch wise(In logic pro it does automatically in EX24 sampling) or i have to do it manually for all the keys? Also when i did it manually for one of the sample and saved it , it unexpectedly and randomly plays different pitch sometimes than the assigned pitch ,what mistake I'm doing ? Thanks

Dave, this is the only tutorial that I've found on this topic that is straight forward and easy to understand. Thanks very much for taking the time to post this. IMO, the Kronos is the king of boards, but sometimes can be difficult to dig into the nuts and bolts of it. It's a shame that Korg has replaced it with the Nautilus. It's been 7 years since your post; are you still using the Kronos?
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 10 месяцев назад
Thanks so much for your comment! As a matter of fact, yes! I did sell my K73, but still have my K2-88 as my main board. I've thought about the Nautilus since it has the same sound engines, but an expanded HD-1 sample set, (ROM's) but I can't justify paying that much when it simply doesn't offer anything else the Kronos can't. It doesn't have Karma (Either a stripped down version, or it's just using an advanced arpeggiator), stripped down control functions, and while the new UI is pretty and the touch screen is WAY better, it's just... It's not as much for your money. Unless Korg is working on a new all-in-one workstation that does something fantastic, the Korg Kronos is still the king of the hill in my mind. I HAVE, however, been looking at the Kurzweil 2700 though. I've been a Kurzweil fanboy since the early 2000's and the 2700 actually seems like it might be a worthwhile board to investigate. I can't play one anywhere near where I live, so I can't actually speak to it but I've liked some of the things they did with the PC4. Once I can play with one for a while, I might add it to the arsenal.

Can someone help to clear my question up please regarding sampling/samples. When I create a sample, I have to rename the multi sample, This is the question, should the name of the multisample be the heading of maybe the song you want to create, and the samples you create within that multisample are used maybe for a particular song…. Or is the multisample more of a user bank name for example, My 80s Music so this is where you would maybe store all samples to with 80s, Then maybe you would have another Multisample named electro music, and within this this is where you would store all your electronic sounds. I found it confusing when I click on multisample and sample and see all the samples I’ve made. I thought Renaming multisample would be like a sub directory . Any help would be great full. Thanks.

@AudoraAudio

You don't; the Kronos requires congruent zones back to back. Some of those can be empty or have unassigned samples, but it still needs a zone of some kind to exist first.

Hello, is the Kronos 2 a good deal in 2020? I would like to record Samples and plays with them. I would particularly record Audi and Midi Tracks without use a computer. Is it good for that? Let me ask a question : what kind of stylet are you using? THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 4 года назад
Depending on the price, the Kronos 2 is still a great board in 2020! If something happened to mine, I would absolutely get another. The stylus I'm using is from the Wii U actually, it works great. The audio and midi recording is fine, though the Kronos is missing the piano roll editor so that's a downside. I'd still prefer to edit MIDI in a DAW on a PC but I do know some who record everything in the Kronos by itself.

Hrmm. If you're doing it like I'm doing it but it's not playing the wave file... I have no idea. Any file formats that it supports natively should play when you select the file and hit the play button. I'm somewhat at a loss. Let me investigate on my side and see if I can find something that causes it, like a file size, type, bitrate, etc.

GREAT VIDEO. 1 question . i loaded a 30 sec sample off of a you tube audio clip of a band on to a USB , i then tried to get it onto the kronos but it wont accept the file, any thoughts. As i am now resorting to holding a microphone to a speaker playing the you tube audio? thanks
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 6 лет назад
The problem likely isn't the clip, but rather that most cases you'll be recording it as an MP3 file. The Kronos doesn't work with MP3 files though - it must be a 16 bit wave file. Try saving the file that you've recorded into that format instead and see how that works!

@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 6 лет назад
You can use an external application like Audacity which will allow you to change pitch without changing tempo. I don't know if it can be done within the Kronos that way since I've never tried. I've only ever used external software to do edits like that with samples.

Thank you Sir. Can this be done on Korg PA 1000? That's the keyboard 🎹 I have. Basically, I want to take a sample of say Accordian from a music wave file and load it and then create my one. The one in Korg is not so good. Same with Santoor, strings etc. If it can, then it means you can create ANY sound with just one seconds of a tone? Am I correct here? Perhaps you can verify.
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 6 лет назад
Karim Sumar Not exactly. A short sample is only good for a few keys, because then you run into issues with formant problem, time stretching and lots of quality. You would need a bunch of samples from across the entire key range to get a playable sample. As far as the PA1000, I'm not familiar with that keyboard and it's ability to use samples. If it can, then I imagine you have the ability to manipulate them as well but the manual for that should have more information.
@ksumar
@ksumar 6 лет назад
Audora Audio OK thank you so much sir for responding. If anyone else has a Korg Pa1000 and can appreciate what I am trying to accomplished then please comment. Imagine being able to take any sound 🔊 and then having it done over samples over the entire keyboard 🎹 range. 😊

@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 5 лет назад
As far as I understand, there's no specific format for any particular samples. You should be able to assign any normal sample to the release phase of ADSR. It's more of a programming function of the HD-1 engine. I'm not aware of any automated process however

@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 5 лет назад
It's an unfortunately hard synth to work with, I totally understand how you feel man. Generally once you have the samples in place in sampling mode, you have to save them to disk in Korg Sample Format. Go to Disk mode, tap the Save tab on the bottom. Now in the top right drop down, choose 'Save KSC' or Save Sampling Mode Data... I'm on my phone and not near the Kronos, so trying to go from memory. Anyway, once you do that, there's a new window that asks what you want to save. Choose 'User Sample Data' I think. There are two other options too, something about links. You don't want those ones, just your user samples. This will get it saved. If you want the samples to show up when you boot up though, you need to go to Global mode, then the KSC Auto load tab, and add the file you saved but the one that has filename_userbank.ksc - This loads the sample like a mini sample library, and the sounds will play when you boot up. Give that a try, let me know if you get stuck and I'll try to help.
@WaltMo4

@AudoraAudio

@@WaltMo4 Samples are inherently stored in RAM or short-term memory. This is pretty commonplace on synths as long as they've existed. With the exception of very few synths, (Kurzweil PC3K for example) samples are always lost on power down and need to be reloaded. Did you save those files to disk before powering down? (Disk mode, Save Sampling mode data)? If you did, then they're likely saved on the hard drive and just need to be loaded when you boot up. Look in the manual for something called "KSC Auto-Load". By the way, the area for samples and songs are in RAM, you need to load them when you boot up.
@WaltMo4

Dave. I have decided to transition to the Kronos as my go to board for beat making and sampling. I have owned it for a year and have been dreading facing the learning curve! I think my mistake is that a have been saving the samples in ram instead of disk. Once again thank you for all of your help! By the way, there is one more caviot. Their is a box that can be checked in the midst of saving samples and it literally disassociates the samples from the program. My question is; does that step need to be done post adding it to the KSC? Thanks in advance!
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 5 лет назад
@@WaltMo4 No problem at all Walter - happy to help where I can! About the samples - when you save your samples, you want to make sure you're NOT saving "Links to EXi's" and saving only "Sample Mode Data" basically. Don't select the box that says "Force new UserBank Sample ID" because it can and often does disassociate where programs look for the samples. Once you've saved your samples, make sure you load the Filename_UserBank.KSC which is a read-only version of your user sample library, because it also keeps the ID's the same so the programs can always find them again. That, and it allows you to load multiple user-made libraries at the same time. If you get really stuck, swing by www.audora.ca - I teach private lessons if you're really stuck and can help clear things up for you if needed.

Hey David! I LOVE my KRONOS and I LOVE your videos! My question is when you save the .KSC data why did you choose to save "ALL MultiSamples" instead of "One MulitSample"??? I only want one MulitSample saved at the moment. It looks to me that when I save "All MultiSamples" the KRONOS literally saves ALL of the MultiSamples(I've created) in the keyboard, and they're ALL in the new folder named "Whatever I Just Saved". When I tried to save with ANY of the other options ie. "ALL", "All Samples", "One MultiSample" or "One Sample" the file didn't save as a .KSC file. Instead it saved as a .KSF or .KMP file... Please give a little feedback.
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 7 лет назад
Thanks Christopher! To answer your questions: I should suggest a few scenarios and why you'd use one sample saving versus another. So let's say you only had one multisample - you could definitely JUST save that single multisample. That's no problem at all if all you want to do is save the multisample itself but NOT the entire keymap and associated samples in relation to programs and such. When you look at the different options, here's what they do: Include (Sampling Mode Data, Links to EXs & User Sample Banks, or Both Sampling Mode & Links) This option is referencing installed Expansions and User samples. The first option "Sampling Mode Data" refers ONLY to user-made samples. These are not installed expansions but just samples created by the user and aren't 'installed' as an expansion with license keys and so-on. The second option "Links to EXs & User Sample Banks" means it's going to save sample references to things like the expansions but doesn't actually save the samples or KSF files which are the Korg Sample Format files. The third option saves both links to the EXs and User Samples... This option will give you errors though if you go to load a user-based sample collection that has references to expansions that you don't have installed. Generally when saving user samples, you only want to use the first option called "Sampling Mode Data" About the options you mentioned: You have 3 levels of samples. You have the sample itself. This is saved in the KSF format. (Korg Sample File) The second layer is the Multisample layer. This layer can contain many individual samples, similar to how a combi contains many programs. This is saved in KMP format. (Korg Multisample Parameter. Think of it as a sample keymapping) The top layer is your "all" mode, which has a specific directory structure, and saves files in KSC format. (Korg Sample Collection) At the top level when you save, you'll have two files and 1 folder: Filename.KSC Filename_userbank.KSC (This contains references to userbank information. Don't ever load this file, but don't delete it either. It's referenced by the primary file called "filename.KSC" where "filename" is the name you gave your samples when you saved them) Filename (This would be a folder) Inside the folder will be two more levels. One is going to be a folder which is given the name of the multisample, and then the multisample files themselves. (And if it's a stereo file, you'll have two folders, one for each channel, L and R) Inside THOSE folders, you'll have the samples themselves (KSF files) So that all being said: You must select "Sampling Mode Data" to save your user samples. Then you must select "All" to save the sample collection as a bundle which includes all of the folders and files I mentioned above. I hope this helps!

If I choose to sample from my phone is the the process still the same? Also, concerning the program that drove your sample, that part was a bit confusing for me. I have been working with the fantom x7: a super easy work station when it comes to sampling. During the process of recording and saving a sample will I be instructed to choose a program or is it somthing that I simply must know?

Walter Moss Thanks! The general process is the same. If you can get a 16bit Wave file, the importation process is to get into the Kronos memory, assign loop points and that sort of thing. Then you need to edit an HD-1 program to use the new sample you've just made.

This video was very very helpful. Thank you!!! Can you, (or someone) please tell me how, (and where) I set samples to stop running through the entire phrase by hitting the same key a second time? I know this can be done, but I don't know from where, or how. Thank you son much, in advance.

Donna Gebbia So you start a sample triggered by a key press but pressing the same key again turns it off? I've never heard of that but it sounds really handy!

Hi, every time I try to load any "User ksc" file, an error message appears. But it does load "ksc" files. Please, how to correctly save and auto-load samples and User KSC files via SSD streaming?

The Kronos is awesome, but it if you want to create quick, sample-based compositions, it takes WAY longer than programming something like an MPC. What makes it worth taking the time is the amount of power and control the Kronos gives you. This is a machine that you must spend LOTS of time with to digest and learn. Korg should redo the user interface though, because it is a little confusing. You waste lots of time accessing the wrong tabs, because some of the descriptions are a little generic compared to direct function. It is still the mother ship of workstations though.

I want the sample to stop when I lift my finger from the key. Is that possible?
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 8 лет назад
Yes, there's a feature called "Hold" and it's at the 16:20 mark. If you uncheck that box, the sample will play based on your ADSR envelope instead of holding forever.

another question. Is that a special digital pen for synth touch screen?? which on do you recomend as "Kronos-friendly". Regards
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 8 лет назад
It's not special, it's a plastic tip pen for the Wii U. Kronos was meant to handle your fingers for input, but I find it a little more precise sometimes.

Hi... When you create a multisample, it it always necesary to associate it to a new created program?.. Can you just create a multisample and leave it resident in the internal memory independently of creating a program? (of course later you may want to asign your multisample to a program you are editing). Cheers
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 8 лет назад
+croonologist Great question - You're totally correct. You don't at all need to assign it to a program, I have several multisamples that I've made that are just ready to go, but aren't assigned to anything just yet.

Good tutorial David.I have a question, how to assign only one sample in all the keys? Thanks!
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 8 лет назад
+O'Niel Minto You just assign the sample 'zone' (the part that tells you which keys the samples are triggered from) from A0 to C9 so it covers all the keys. Make sure you adjust the original key too so that the samples are the correct pitch over all of the keys.

I've also come across a situation where the volume is different between a single-program combi versus just playing the program alone (outside the combi). Is there a way also to boost volume of a program in a combi above apparent 127, as opposed to lowering the master volume as you showed in the video? hope this question makes sense.

Thank you David. This is great! I assume the same procedure applies to recording a sample on the Kronos keyboard itself and saving it to apply within a combi? I'm doing Separate Ways by Journey and there's a little lead line that I'd like to play while triggering another phrase for a one time playthrough (no loop) at a specific tempo. Can this sample be saved in a combi and remain relevant when rebooting the Kronos?
@AudoraAudio
@AudoraAudio 8 лет назад
+Kevin Sage Definitely Kevin. I haven't gotten into the internal self-sampling or CD-ripping aspect of the sampling but as soon as you have a .wav file as a sample reference (no matter how you get it) you can use it within the Kronos as a sample trigger. I know Jordan Rudess did this very thing with one of his own organ sweeps. His hands were busy, so he recorded himself playing an organ sweep (short and long) and assigned those samples to particular keys. Maybe I'll experiment with that a bit myself actually. Here's the video I'm referencing with Jordan and the organ sweeps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vBCbOnK0fDg.html
