Ah - a departure!!!! Excellent ! It was interesting to see all your procedures for the start of your flight. The ground handling at Kos seemed very good. Best of all, the weather was kind, so you were able to show us very clear pictures of the Greek islands en route - often they show as hazy, but today the scenery was excellent. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. The handling at Kos is always doing a good job. In general, my personal experience with Greek handling and ATC was always very good. You are right, nice weather at the islands most of the time means hazy weather, especially if you look down from like 15000 feet or so. But this time, it was wonderful and we both in the cockpit enjoyed the great views. Have a good day!

Wie immer ein tolles Video, Captain! Wahnsinn wie sich die Welt so entwickelt und wir derartige, tiefe Einblicke ins Cockpit bekommen. Ich weiß noch wie ich als Kind (heute 32) immer vor dem Cockpit stand und versucht habe jegliche Lücken zu nutzen um „reinzuschielen“. Einmal wurde ich sogar während des Fluges ins Cockpit gelassen, das vergesse ich bis heute nicht 😊 Damals gab es noch nicht die Sicherheitsbestimmungen von 9/11. Vielen Dank für Ihre ausgezeichnete Arbeit und weiterhin viel Erfolg!

Vielen lieben Dank fürs Anschauen und das sehr persönliche Feedback! Als ich mit dem Fliegen von großen Flugzeugen angefangen habe, war fast immer ein Passagier im Cockpit. Beim Start, der Landung oder auch unterwegs. Auf langen Flügen hat fast jeder Passagier, der interessiert war, mal vorbei geschaut. Leider ist das ja heute aufgrund der beschriebenen Sicherheitsbestimmungen nicht mehr möglich. Trotzdem möchte ich mit allen, die sich dafür interessieren, die Eindrücke teilen, die man im Cockpit bekommt. Das ist der Hauptgrund, weshalb ich den Kanal betreibe. Thanks for watching and for your question! The answer is: It depends. As long as the arrival routing and the approach which is entered in the MCDU is the exact routing we really fly, I prefer to use the automatic system. That provides managed speed during the descent and an automatically activated approach phase and the appropriate speed guidance. Very often, the planned arrival routing/approach is getting shorter or even longer than anticipated. Also additional speed and altitude restrictions may be advised by ATC. In that cases, I use an appropriate selected speed and activate the approach phase manually. I hope that helps. Have a good day!

Thanks for watching and the good feedback! I flew planes from the MD80-family prior my Airbus time. Flying the MD80 made lots of fun. Basic instrumentation with a GPS, but no map displays or so. The cockpit was small and not that good organized like our Airbus cockpit. The passengers did not like the MD80 because the diameter of the cabin is less than the one of an Airbus 320 or other modern jets. I do not want to miss my the MD80-time. Have a wonderful day!

Thanks for watching and for your kind words! Usually we release the cabin and the passengers at about 10000 feet. During this departure, we expected that the ride would be a little bumpy on the way to the cruise altitude. So we waited a little longer. And finally instead of releasing cabin crew and passengers at the same time, we just released the cabin crew and kept the seatbelt-signs on for some more time. Have a good day!

Captain a very happy and very early Sunday morning to you from Southern California. And yes another question from your #1 fan here :) in the US it's customary to start the #1 engine so the green hydraulic pump can energize the NWS and brakes in case something goes wrong. It seems in Europe however engine #2 is often started first. Any particular reason why #2 first? absolutely stunning departire and climbout . Many thanks as always - Kam

A very good morning to California! Thanks for watching and for your question. As long as you do a pushback, it would not matter if you start engine 1 or engine 2 first. Airbus recommends to start engine 2 first because sometimes an engine start is done at an apron position with no pushback. The parking brake is set and the chocks are removed by the ground crew. With the start of engine 2 also the yellow hydraulic system is powered. And the yellow hydraulic system recharges the parking brake accumulator. This makes sure that the plane does not start moving on its own. The newer Airbuses power the NWS (nosewheel steering) via the yellow hydraulic system. Also the yellow hydraulic system provides power for alternate braking. Have a great day and enjoy the California sun!

Hallo ich verfolge ihren Kanal schon länger aber vor kurzem dachte ich mir das sie vielleicht mal mein Pilot waren war zwar Dezember 2019 und ich durfte da auch mal ins Cockpit und der Kapitän dieses Fluges erinnerte mich an sie und die Airline und Airport war auch Eurowings und Düsseldorf

Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und das gute Feedback! Die ATIS hören wir vor dem Anflug ab und nehmen die Daten davon für die Berechnung der Landeperformance. Am Boden hören wir sie wieder ab bevor wir die Start-Performance rechnen und dann nochmal kurz vor dem Losrollen, um zu checken, ob sich wichtige Parameter ungünstig verändert haben. Das würde eine neue Berechnung nach sich ziehen. Meist gibt es jede halbe Stunde eine neue ATIS. Manche Flugplätze ändern auch jede halbe Stunde den Namen der ATIS, daten den Wind aber viel öfter ab. Viele Flugplätze übertragen inzwischen die ATIS auch per Datalink. Dann kommt sie aus unserem Drucker. Das Video beginnt mit der Übermittlung der Clearance durch den Lotsen, die anderen Dinge, inklusive ATIS abhören, Performanceberechnung und Briefing waren bereits erfolgt. Damit die Zuschauer auch die ATIS hören können, habe ich sie ganz am Ende des Videos zur Information nochmal angefügt. Noch einen schönen Tag!

Das ganze bestärkt meinen Wunsch, es nach abgeschlossenem Jurastudium vielleicht doch noch mal zu versuchen, eine ATPL zu bekommen.

How do PM and PF mute themselves? I don't see any push-to-talk buttons. And I don't think all conversations will be broadcasted into the set frequency (like Tower, Ground, Departure..). What am I missing? Thanks

Good question: There is a push to talk button on the sidestick and on the audio control panel for every pilot. Even if the interphone is hot, ATC does not hear what the pilots speak. They have to press one of the push to talk buttons to transmit outside.

Kos und Korfu sind normale Flugplätze. Warum die auf solch einer Liste stehen, weiß ich nicht. Ich vermute, dass es dabei eher um die Infrastruktur am Boden geht, denn aufgrund der Lage und dem beengten Raum, ist dort kein Platz für Rollwege, die parallel zur Start- und Landebahn verlaufen. Wenn es gefährlich oder besonders problematisch wäre, einen Flughafen anzufliegen, dann würden wir dort nicht hinfliegen. Schließlich wollen wir mit unseren Passagieren und der Crew immer gut ankommen. Es gibt Flughäfen, die etwas herausfordernder sind als andere. Dazu gehören Samos, Funchal, Calvi, Mostar. Für die gibt es dann vorab ein spezielles Training für die Crew im Simulator und Flugzeug. Die Plätze werden nur von den entsprechend trainierten Pilotinnen und Piloten angeflogen. I know the turn to the left has been around for a while. But i would be interested to know why the departure route from LGKO was changed. What is the point of turning immediately left and then right again if the aircraft continues to fly to or over kalymnos island? Where is here the benefit.

I do not know about the specific design reasons for this departure routing. In general, instrument departure routes are designed to keep the airplane track free of obstacles. And for all non Rnav departures, it must be ensured that the required radio nav stations can be received during the departure. Even planes with minimum performance should be able to fly it. Also, noise and the separation from arriving airplanes may be taken into account.

which is the right moment/part of the flight to turn AP2 on? Before that moment, is the aircraft totally hand-flown by the PF following the flight director or is he only "assisting" the navigation which is all done by the system?

When hand flying, the pilot flying follows the flight director. The plane is doing whatever the inputs on the stick are. He or she decides for how long. Usually latest at about 10000 feet, the autopilot is turned on. The flight director bars are generated by the flight management system on the basis of our inputs into the system.

Thanks for watching and your question. Whenever we check that it is safe and ATC may grant approval, we ask for shortcuts. That is true for approach, departure and enroute. We always try to fly the shortest way to save fuel and time and to reduce emissions. For this particular departure, we both had flown it lots of times and we checked the chart and our performance prior to the flight. During our briefing (which had not been taped) we agreed about asking the tower during departure since we were in VMC and climbed over water to the minimum safe altitude. We confirmed that again during our taxi to the runway and even monitored it during the flight. Sometimes a direct clearance is given with a restriction, like fly runway heading and turn to xxx when passing xxx feet.

There are 2 small steering wheels, called "Tiller", on the right and left side of the cockpit for turning the airplane on the ground. The rest is done by the sidesticks. I like the stick more than the conventional yoke.

No, recording is not old. Just a few days. And for sure: The current checklists and procedures were used. The normal procedures and checklists are published by the company. As far as I know, there will be changes in the future. If Airbus changes something in the normal procedures, it is usually not automatically changed by the larger airlines. The airlines can even make their own SOPs. And before changes are implemented, they have to go through risk assessments, the manuals needs to be updated and the pilots need to be trained. All this takes a while.
