A circuit walk from Rennix gap to Andrews lookout.
Spring 2023 #14 : Rennix Gap - Northern route to Andrews lookout (Skirting the meadows) - Return via southern route (Ridge line).
Distance : Probably 8-10 km return.
Walking conditions : Sub alpine meadows and heath avoidance methods.
Notes : After getting a feel for the meadows to the west of Andrews lookout, I find a route that is a lot easier than the heathy ridge crest approach from Rennix gap. Once located, grassy meadows lead most of the way up.
The return route is via the heathy ridge crest, and involves a heath crossing of 50m or so. There are various snowgrass pathways through the heath, but they can really only be discerned from above.
Always interested in the original stock route to the summit area, I am delighted to find an ancient tree embedded upside down in the soil, and wonder if it is a sign of the earlier use of this area. Seems to be perhaps a place that horses could be tethered.
As is common knowledge, magpies can be a pest at breeding time, becoming overly territorial and swooping unsuspecting bystanders. This particular strain (KNP) tends to veer away at the end of a swoop. I always clap my hands when they get close, this deters them even more.
Most birds understand that they can't be seen as easily when we look towards the sun, so they will often swoop from that direction. Magpies in particular seem to watch our eyes, and know to begin a swoop when we aren't looking.
It takes them about a month to get through the phase.
