I personally read this for the first time when I was 11 and didn’t think anything of Sophie meeting Fitz and going with him, and it definitely didn’t make me go “oh if there’s some stranger telling me of this new world I should go with him to achieve my dream life” like I can understand the concern from the parent but they also need to think about the probability that their child is thinking this. Also this defiantly doesn’t fit everyone but for me when I was 11 I wouldn’t even talk much to a stranger unless it was like someone at the cash register or an employee at a store
Exactly! It is fiction and in normal circumstances wouldn’t happen 😭 but also Sophie had major hesitation until Fitz showed he did have magic powers and did run away from him at first
I think the most aggravating one-star reviews are the ones who say “there was no character development” when they didn’t make it past the first book/episode.
Honestly, the biggest problem with adults reading middle-grade fantasy is that they interpret a lot of things according to THEIR adult thinking and not according to what a middle grader would think. When I was reading KOTLC in the sixth grade my LAST THOUGHT would have been Fitz isolating Sophie to kidnap her and force her into an abusive relationship. For middle graders, it's very simple, a girl discovers she's an elf and goes to join elf land. End of story. No middle-grader thinks like that. Assuming they do is the epitome of overexxageration.
I'm guessing that the people who were critisizing the books for being targeted toward younger kids were most likely teenagers rather than adults, just because they probably heard that the series had older fans and were confused, thinking that it was a YA series rather than a middle grade. Jokes on them though, all of the teenagers well above the age bracket (like myself and a ton of my friends) are just too emotionally invested at this point to let go, and we wouldn't like it as much if we found it now. As for that person that said they only read like 8 pages, HOW. I force myself to read at least half of a book before I give up because otherwise I might regret it later, if I FINALLY finish it and end up loving it. I think my least favorite of these reviews, though, is the one where they BASH MY POOR KEEFE! He's such a sweetheart!! *sobs incoherently in fangirl*
I am a teenager and I love this book in fact I love the series of books ( well so far up to the sixth) they can hate it all they like but more fool them
Honestly like none of these people finish a book- like, I’ve had books that at first I found kind of boring, but later on they get a lot better. Idk just my opinion that you shouldn’t stop reading like 10 pages into a book? Great video btw! Would love to see more of these.
i would absolutely read a spin off novel focusing on a talentless MC trying to navigate a world based solely on talents, but that's about the only thing i disagree with you on.
he DEFINITELY has the most unique personality and so I can see why he is both loved and hated -- I am definitely on the love side though. he is my favorite!!
As much as I love the series, I did sort of agree on more than I thought I would lol. Though I did scream out loud when someone said they hate Keefe 😅😂
I agree with some of the opinions like how the black swan don’t do anything and we’ve been trying to get the Neverseen for too long, but other than that WHY ARE YOU GIVING IT A 1 STAR REVIEW THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD
I think, to a degree, lower star reviews are good, since they might encourage people to see new points of view and they allow an outlet for disagreement, which is fundamental for discussions and, after all, people have different book tastes. That's one of the main reasons i go on Goodreads actually- to see why people did/didn't like a book and whether or not i think i will. And besides...i have to say I've left a ranty review or two in my time...it is kind of fun sometimes lol😊
Great video. I have a poster in my room that is the cover of Exile but without the title and author name. Also, am I the only one who thinks Troy looks a little like Dex?
In the second one - Like, if you'd kept reading a little longer you'd learn that EVERY ELF has telekinesis XDDDD I mean, I think Sophie has too many abilities for her own good, and I also think she's stupid - but that doesn't stop me enjoying the series
SO EXZITED I can’t belive some people think there are 1 star reviewes! I love these book, I would rate them 6 of out 5. I cant wait to see what people say! Edit: awesome video! Nice to see others perspective on the books besides people who enjoy them!
Well I think reading from the viewpoint of a talentless would actually be pretty cool cuz you could see the opposite perspective but I get where they were coming from
8:20 Wellll, seeing as how (most) seven year old children wouldn't be able to understand kotlc because of its complexity... ALSO, if we're talking about later books, for example, the time Umber shattered the bones in sophie's hands one by one could be extremely scary for a small child
I mean, most popular stories have a protagonist that is uniquely different from the other characters, look at harry potter "the boy who lived"and percy jackson "son of poseidon",
What annoys me is that everyone adding reviews like 'this is cliche' and 'there's no plot' haven't read the whole series. The first book is a little common, but aren't all first book? Also, they aren't even cliches, they're TROPES. And it's a SERIES... not hating, just being technical 😂
Oh boy, one star reviews!! I could never rate this series so low, it has a special place in my heart. But, to be fully honest... After I finished reading the series I realized there were so many pieces of the plot that didn't amount to anything, like the Exillium training camps at foxfire. And, don't hate me for this, but the characters can be quite immature at times but then get oddly serious at others. I constantly forget how old they are 🤣 This series is still so special to me though and I've invested so much time into it. I also love meeting all these wonderful fans (like you guys!!) Sorry that comment was really long it seems like I'm writing a review now 😅 My rating for the overall series would be 4/5 💜💜 LOVE U SM BESTIE
hahaha yesss give us your review 🙌🙌 I would argue the Exillium training camps actually foreshadowed and established the whole plot twist and climax of Lodestar with the skill of breaking things in your mind and I think people just forget stuff like that or don’t see the connections sometimes. Like KOTLC #1 had sooo much foreshadowing and early details that set up for the ending which I love about Shannon! Also no worries about the long comment I like hearing your thoughts! The series is truly special!! Love you!!
@@kotlcfanbase OOOOOH yeah you're right actually that's the whole reason Lumenaria fell bc of skills from the training camps!! Okay thank you I totally forgot lololol 😅😅💜
First? I do agree with some of the reviews( especially with how there is barely any diversity) and I don’t really like the Sophie that much but that’s my opinion and i would still give kotlc a 4.5 star review(oh and don’t get me started on the plot holes lol)
I'm reading this series for the first time and I'm 19. Loving every bit of it. Does it have its flaws, absolutely. But I'm completely in love with my imagination of this world
This video was great great great great great great great great great great great great! Most of these were slightly relatable 😂 I definitely understand why adults wouldn't love the series, but then again it's not targeted to that age group 😂 yeah and why does everyone fall head over heels for Sophie? 🤣🤣 That one about Fitz KIDNAPPING Sophie and taking literal advantage of her was a bit far tho- 😭😂😂 Thank you so much for the video bestie 💜 (I was wondering, are you on summer break yet?) Have a great week hope to talk soon! Ilysm 💜💜😁
yup! the criticism wasn't HORRIBLE, I think it was just the mindset that they went into the book with. of course if you are looking to hate a book, you'll notice its flaws more so than its perfections :)) yes im on summer break! ilysm!
Notice that the people giving these one-star reviews only have like two other reviews! These users basically got on Goodreads just to give KotLC scathing criticism. Of all the books to hate . . . 🤨😂😂
I think (the one that mentions Aryans) is saying that the racial minorities in the book tend to get the short end (or better put: the terrible end) of the stick and when you think about it (Wylie, Tam, Linh, and Wylie’s dad) that's kinda true...
Yup! Of course Tam and Linh are the ones banished and Wylie and Prentice are outcasts 😭😭 thanks for explaining because their review didn’t make sense to me :)
I completely disagree with the dex slander in the "all the boys fall for her" rating, bc dex did also think biana was the second prettiest when he had that slip saying "shes jelous shes not the prettiest girl anymore" and then he realized what he implied, and the reason he like sophie more was 1. she was pretty, 2. she came into the store with his aunt 3. she had brown eyes, those three things are different from other girls he wouldve seen and liked, he knew she was different because of the eyes, that gave hima good feeling, and if shes next to his aunt who has been anisocial as long as hes been alive then maybe she really does have a different attitude
As an adult (60) I actually enjoyed all the books. As it is written basically from the kids point of view I don't know why an adult would try to even explain it from an adult perspective.
What is the quickest you’ve read any of the books? I recently finished lodestar and it took me about a week I’m curious to see how long it takes others
I recently started reading a book that is a little bit like KOTLC (and Harry Potter) called The Marvellers. It’s a good book if anyone wants to read it. It reminded of when I read the first KOTlC book.
Funny thing. That one review that said she was so special telekinesis that only she could do was wrong. They can all use telekinesis. Maybe pay attention before leaving a bad review
Most of them are right about Sophie she is suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper overrated! She's not a bad character but she is overrated. Y'know I kinda agree with Sara. Yo did Kate Feldman just insult us 11 year olds???!!!?!? Hope you all have a nice dayyyy!!
SPOILER ALERT: I strongly disagree with you for several of reasons including character development, plot, and uh yeah, a lot. Here are some reasons: - Sophie. She is a HUGE Mary Sue. I get that a hero with lots of powers and stuff might seem interesting, but I really like a character who can work hard to earn everything they have. It’s just given to Sophie. She also constantly ignores Dex, who is supposedly her “best friend.” She’s supposed to be all clumsy and cute, but the moment she goes into battle, her clumsiness conveniently disappears. There’s also a moment where Keefe finds a puzzle thing, and he spent so long trying to figure it out, but Sophie comes along and solves it in one try. It’s really annoying how the author intends to make her really smart and wise, but there are multiple situations where she isn’t very smart. Emotional intelligence is a very important part of being “wise,” and she lacks a good amount of it. Having a character without any imperfections or flaws makes them seem almost inhuman. WELL THEY’RE ELVES, but you know what I mean. A character who isn’t all powerful and perfect is more interesting and relatable than a character who is perfect with 500 powers. It’s VERY weird that all the boys fall for her because what, she’s hot? Is that it? Also, when she found out Oralie was her biological mother, she was angry at Oralie for abandoning her?? Oralie helped her in so many ways, AND she was forced to leave Sophie. Plus, Sophie grew up with a family, shouldn’t that be enough?? When Sophie took Keefe’s blood to open the door thing WITHOUT KEEFE LETTING HER, I was absolutely infuriated. She’s always like “IM NOT A KID” and “DONT BABY ME” yet she does the exact same thing to her friends. She acts like they’re incompetent, even thought they literally do everything for her. She thinks she can do everything by herself, but she can’t. - Fitz is also terrible. His anger issues is definitely something he needs to work on, but he blames Sophie for EVERYTHING, his dad’s mind break, not telling him who her biological mother is. Even so, she just keeps running back to him. It’s extremely annoying. Their relationship is toxic, it’s her choice whether or not she wants to file for matchmaking. Fitz obviously cares more about his legacy than Sophie. That’s not love. - Character development obviously never made it to this series. Sure, Sophie gets new powers but she never changes. She never got braver, wiser, or any other personality traits that make a strong character. Her supposed “kindness” gets in the way of facing the real enemy. All she cares about is building a relationship between her crushes, later resulting in leaving her friends behind. Dex and Marella are forgotten, Sophie only talking to them when she needs something. She never grows as a person. She’s also supposedly “wise,” but smart and wise are two completely different things. - The series literally turns into a fan fiction of itself. Books 7 and 8 focus more on the lOvE tRiAnGlE than the plot. - Speaking of the love triangle, I get that it makes things sPiCy and adds drama, but I don’t understand the point of it anymore. It’s literally not going anywhere. JUST MAKE UP YOUR MIND. -Way too many side plots. The first few books were oKaY compared to the later books like 6, 7, and 8 only because there weren’t as many plots. How many plots can you get in a story without ruining the entire book and making the reader go crazy..? Sophie constantly tries to juggle way too many problems on her own, like helping Keefe recover his memories, trying to find her biological parents, and defeating the Neverseen. She’s so taken up by her own problems that she doesn’t pay any attention on her friends other than her two crushes. It’s like Shannon Messenger is trying to make this series a teenage romance book instead of an action packed series. - Sophie gets mad at her friends for keeping secrets when SHE DOES THE EXACT SAME THING. She NEVER uses her powers fully, like she has 500 of them but never uses them to their full potential. She’s always saying that she has EVERYTHING under control and she’s all strong and blood? HA IM NOT SCARED, and then bang, “OH NOO BLOOD IM GONNA THROW UP, SOMEONE CATCH ME AS I FALL IN TERROR AND I HAVE LIKE 200 BODY GUARDS BUT I DONT NEED THEM BECAUSE I CAN FULLY CONTROL ALL MY POWERS.” - she also HAS to be included in everything. Like when Keefe and Dex were working on something together, she got MAD at them for keeping it a secret from her. Like what, they can’t have privacy? They were going to work on it themselves, but she just HAD to butt in. Something’s aren’t her business, but now it is because she wants to be included even though she leaves multiple of her friends out all the time. These are mainly just reasons to hate Sophie, and I could write paragraphs on many other characters and plots, but I won’t because it’s really long lol. My sister just said “Sophie is a huge dumbbell that can’t carry her own weight.” Lol not wrong. Also, by the way, I’m not an adult and I have read the entire series. I’m under 16 so YEAH, that’s all I’m gonna say about that. I get that some people may like the series, but this is just my opinion, so don’t get offended and everything.
@@katatouille. it’s so obvious when people either go on second accounts or get friends to reply/like comments because it’s so unlikely a comment posted 2 mins ago will have 2 replies to it already and it always makes me cringe 😂😂😳
I have a friend who’s still reading the series and she LOVES the rest of the series but thinks the first book is ABSOLUTE TRASH. “Sophie’s too overpowered” and tbh, she kinda is. I love the books and always will but uhh she doesn’t have that much power and is jsut shown as having so much in the first book
keepers of the lst cities is the best book i read before i am only done with everblaze.I think i will read the next one neverseen during the november though i already have the book because i am taking turns to read books.
To an extent, I disagree with the age thing. I would say its quite enjoyable beyond middle schoolers as a lot of the fandom is composed of teens. I can see how maybe the first book is more middle school targeted, but the series has matured a lot since then, and some sites even call it young adult lol. Considering this, I'd say the series continues to be good not because of the nostalgia but because of the quality and growth in maturity.
Only one I don't like is Fitz , sure he was a perfectly great dude and basically "Elvin royalty" at the start but then when Sophie couldn't fix Alden it was all down hill yell, ignore and be generally horrible. then he promised that he would never do it again. and yet when Sophie didn't tell him who her biological parent is back to yelling and even breaking up along with a whole lot of ignoring. He also was mad at Keefe for looking up to Avlar but before the "epic betrayal " Fitz looked up to him too. Also he is not good enough for Sophie. I SHIP SOKEEFE and only lord hunkyhair is worthy of the moonlark ; )
I agree with some of your points, but fitz is just a teenager trying to figure everything out, Alden was his dad and idol, and suddenly he was gone its normal and realistic for him to get mad, anger is a very common coping mechanism, as for the breakup, I do agree he had no right to that but he tried to fix it and repeatedly apologised Keefe is a meh character for me mostly because he makes alot of mistakes and never apologises for them, if he does its only for sophie and not to any of his friends, he also bullied tam which doesn't sit right with me but no hate to anyone who likes him this is just my opinion
Ok so as much as s couple of the things they said are true.obly read 8 pages you need to read at least half of the book to atchirly properly understand that plot I love this book and ot is amazing
this is just my opinion, but keefe is my favorite character (i still love all of them...exept for fitz) also,*ahem* SOKEEFE FOR EVERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!sorry for caps lol...
