Footwork is critical when it comes to self-defense! A practitioner should be skilled in their ability to utilize proper footwork to reduce the chances of injury or worse. In Krav Maga, weapons are typically reserved for upper levels due to the fact that students should have the ability to utilize very good footwork while also performing tasks with the hands, arms and body simultaneously in a defensive situation. If defending against a weapon, a defender may only get one chance when they decide to perform the technique, so footwork needs to be top notch.
There are 2 concepts to footwork which includes:
Step & Pull
Bursting
While step & pull may be best utilized once a dominant position is achieved, it is not the best option when attempting to achieve that position in the fight/attack.
The burst is much faster than the step & pull and allows the defender to get off line or shall we say, off the line of fire much quicker.
