Hyperbolic Failure: This is a very good example of a complex system where, if any individual part fails to perform its function, will cause a dramatic escalation of damage beyond the failed part.
A slat leaves a slot between the slat and the wing that allows air to flow through it and energize the air flowing over the wing. A leading edge flap (ie: a Kruger flap) extends the leading edge but is sealed against the wing and has no slot.
