This was the ballsiest thing I've ever seen. What I love about KT is how when she's setting up, despite the circumstances, she looks and acts like she's got every right to be there among the big names. And the hunger-- all she needed was one shot, and she took it.
She was only booked as a backup for the show as well: just 'on call' in case one of the other musicians cancelled, and with only about 3 hours to go IIRC, one of them did. Talk about taking the shot...
@@MrHws5mp She travelled down on the coach. Even with a following wind, Glasgow to London in three hours would be quite the feat! 😂 But yes, very little notice.
17 years later, this is as impressive and fresh as it was back then. You know a career changing moment when you see it, there were many on Jools Holland Later, I personally think this was the best of them,
I was lucky enough to be there. KT sat quietly all the way through and I like most had no idea who she was. That soon changed. Without a shadow of a doubt she was the stand out performance. Very very cool.
And to think this was her first TV appearance and to have the talent and guts to do that on that show in front of other established musicians. Amazing performance.
I remember watching this on the Later show and being blown away! I found out that KT was performing at a small gig in Bristol just a few weeks later and went to see her perform live in front of a hundred or so fans and she was equally amazing.
I was never really into KT Tunstall, but I still come back and watch this performance over and over. Whether it's your type of music or not, this is outstanding. Truly mesmerizing!
Exactly. This was the first time I saw here and my mind was blown, but I was disappointed by the album. Still glad this was her debut though and I often watch and recommend :-)
Actually her father was a professor. He tried to teach me physics once... I remember his look of incomprehension that I didn’t know what he was talking about.
@James Wilkinson in te city winery concert she says she had almost no time and that in fact it was a replacement for Nas... Furthermore, she jokes about wearing cut sleeves in her legs... go figure
Been watching Jools since the very start & have to sat that KT is without doubt the best raw talent to have appeared on that show. That's some really stiff opposition she's up against I know but I remember watching this live & once my gaping mouth had closed at the end of her performance, the only word that came out was a gasp of "Wow!". Such a talent & a hell of a way to make an entrance to the big leagues
@@TimmyTickle That was Bowie - watch his set, it was outstanding. And still wasn't close to Queen. There aren't many artists with the ability and self-confidence to follow someone that just blew everyone off the stage, but David Bowie was one of them.
One of the very best performances ever recorded on Later with Jools Holland. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that Tunstall was a last minute stand in. Another artist dropped out of the show not long before recording, and KT received a call. She made her way down to the studio with just her guitar and loop pedal, and produce an astonishing live performance.
Fuck it. I know we’re not supposed to say this in 2021, but Jesus, can we just agree this was sexy? KT is an amazing musician and performer with a killer voice. But by god, seeing her use her whole body as a rhythm machine, and commanding this whole audience was undeniably sexy.
I keep coming back to this uplifting and amazing performance. I used to think it should be mandatory viewing for all music students, but probably it should be mandatory viewing for EVERYONE.
I remember the very first time that I watched this... and to this day, it shakes my soul so much... she is so fearless, commands a raw and powerful performance. While gives a masterclass about how to use a looper pedal! Simply phenomenal! Completely in love, even after some 20 years...
ye I saw this one performance and liked it so much I went out and bought a looper pedal thingy..... I'm still doing my original job, harder than it looks🤔
I have to admit that I had never heard of her until 2007 when she recorded backing vocals for one of my favourite singer songwriters Suzanne Vega on her album "Beauty & Crime" I read on Google that the two of them actually never met during the recording of that album. Such a shame, because they both have alot in common. Only Suzanne has been around since the 1980's.
Yep just goes to show that many a great performers sometimes slip by us as we walk past them while busking for a dime , she stole the show that night ✌️
the thing that strikes me is the raw talent and confidence in her material and instruments. being that she was a busker herself as a one person band - i can see how ed picked up on the craft and utilized it. people are right though. her lyrics are totally original and unique. who thinks up a theme of a black horse and a cherry tree? like wow! there is no way that they can be anyone elses. whereas ed has been hit with a copy cat label because he went bubble gum. but i cant help but wonder if that is the music industry machine and not just ed. if you look at KT and her trajectory - she has stayed relevant because she found her path and didnt stay in the plastic world. whereas ed is huge across the world at the moment and he did. but when i listen to some of the lyrics of some of the songs he has out right now - and little things and narratives from the movie yesterday he is in - there are themes of staying true to yourself and not getting swept up in the plastic world of fame. which obviously KT navigated and didnt buy into or sell out to. for instance the moment in yesterday where ed and the movie poke fun at himself for turning "hey jude" into "hey dude". was all the bubble gum and plagiarism all on ed? or was it also producers in the backround and he has to take the heat for that now? we dont know - but it made me go hmm.
I remember being gobsmacked when I saw her do this on Jools; you have to admit he has a lot of bloody dross on there, but every now and then a diamond pops out. You were left wondering 'how haven't I heard of her....?' A brilliant, career-defining moment.
Lile most of the comments here, can still remember watching this on Jools, and like everyone else, witnessing an iconic moment! Saw her live the first chance I could get after that.
I am in awe, every time I see KT Tunstall perform. Especially solo, with this crazy (as in, it takes crazy talent to do it) looping sh*t. Wow. My life is enriched for seeing her perform. Thank you KT.
This performance never gets old! i am always amazed with her talent whenever i see this video.she is such a great female musician and music industry need more musician like her.
It seems the MSM only promote the artists they can lucrative gain from even though they are trash. The sheep are brainwashed after listening to their pedalled crap for days on end, and buy it on the scammy apps whilst on autopilot. In fact many millenials would walk about like zombies without their phones.
@@juzzlookin - Harsh ... but a pretty fair assessment of what commercial music, social media, media streaming and online gambling has achieved for society.
Wow I was 9 when this first aired! Has been my favorite jools holland performance all that time. I'm 23 now mad how something sticks in your memory like that. Seriously impressive talent!
just about to turn 30, this popped up, didnt even remember posting this comment..... still my favourite Jools holland. honestly i hope she realises how iconic this performance was
I just learned about this performance from Adam Reader, the Professor of Rock channel just now but I've been watching Mike Love, the Hawaiian musician who I first saw with this kind of set up ( the use of looper) in his songs and live performances. Now I know who the originator was. K T Turnstall was superb here. Truly Amazing!
