Wow! I love how the kids are willing to try any food presented to them. That vinegar pork trotters is an acquired taste. That sour gingery taste is either wonderful or horrible for some. Amazing how you guys love it! And it’s awesome how you let them kids enjoy sweet treats too. Good Wednesday!

In Indonesia, they call it martabak manis if the seller also sells the savoury martabak together. Otherwise, it is called terang bulan. Some of Indonesians think this pancake like martabak manis as local invention as they have only seen our thin crispy version of apam balik. In truth, this snack which can be thick like pancake or thin and crispy were brought over from southern china migrants to south east asia in 19th century.

The longest night market is in Setia Alam which only happen on Saturday. It is one hour drive away from Kuala Lumpur. It just slightly longer than Taman Connaught night market. This night market in the video is much nearer to Kuala Lumpur. Most of the street food will be available in both night market. Check out the list (from KL Foodie recommendation) below if you looking for night market on any day. Mr Jonathan, you must be the toughest blogger around, as physically and mentally you are taxed to the maximum. Being a teacher it is an advantage as you can go on talking non-stop. Your wife also exhibits her cheerful side. Your kids played their roles well though I wasn't quite sure if they could keep on. I don't expect kids to maintain consistent demeanour throughout, but your kids are veterans. Enjoy your stay.
Man I regret not going to this market when I visited Malaysia..... it was only on Wednesday and my schedule was packed.....guess I will have to go back again
Taman Connaught = Connaught Garden There is a Pasar Malam (Night Market) on any given night in Kuala Lumpur and its surroundings. Usually only one night in one place. The one in Taman Connaught is the largest.

For the apam balik, I would recommend the original one! The combination of sweet corn, peanuts and sugar is just heavenly Although I like the smaller and thinner one better 😁
Apam balik and murtabak Malaysian version are the opposite version of the Indonesian haha.. We call them Apam balik but they call them murtabak.. Same ingredients but opposite name.. Malaysian style apam balik not too sweet compared to indonesian style..

⭐️ we have taro too in the Philippines. We call it “gabi”. It’s not ube. Similar but different. 🇵🇭 One distinction is that we normally use gabi in hot savory while ube is almost uniquely a snack or dessert. Gabi is used in one hot sweet snack called ginataan halo-halo (not the popular ice dessert but a hot bowl; ginataan actually means cooked in coconut cream).
the black vinegar trotter is usually cooked for ladies after delivery during confinement, its suppose to be sweet, vinegary - suppose to be warming up the body after delivery
no one mention this, but I would like to applaud the wife for keeping it vegan. maybe find some chinese vegetarian restaurant next time, you'll love it
Is Mummy vegetarian/vegan? Noticed she didn’t eat meats in ur every videos but only bao, chips or night market sweets. Malaysia has plenty of vegetarian restaurants/ foods 😊❤
For your knowledge , apam balik is NOT murtabak. Murtabak is not Apam Balik. Apam balik is dough, butter, peanuts, corn, sugar Murtabak is a very thick dough filled with meat usually chicken, beef with sauce, onion. Very filling hardy meal. Sometimes ginger dipping sauce is provided, otherwise can dip in curry. Roti canai is a flat dough crispy outside, soft inside. Comes with curry as dipping sauce. It is quite similar to paratha but not the same.
they were referring to MARTABAK which is also called martabak manis from Indonesia, same as your apam balik in Malaysia or Min Jiang Kueh in Singapore, all originating from China u are confused with Murtabak which is savoury and filled with egg and meat, they definitely know the difference as I have seen them have both
They live in Indonesia, and in Indonesia, the thicker version of apom balik is called martabak (manis). Now you understand why. :) When I first moved to Singapore, I was also surprised that the Singapore version of murtabak (similar to Malaysia's) differs greatly from martabak in Indonesia (one is savoury, another is sweet).
how mad is it that while researching and planning for my upcoming Langtang Valley Trek, i stumbled upon your YT videos, which were the most helpful especially the Kyanjin Ri one...and then a few days later, this video appeared in my feed and realized that you were actually in Tmn Connaught a month ago (!!!), which is the place where i was born and bred ! My parent's home is like literally a min walk away from the night market !! (we call it Pasar Malam!)....what a small world ! haha.......your Nepal vids have been very helpful to me in my planning.....am really looking forward to Nepal....thanks a lot and bless u all ! awesome family ! Korean stuff is popular here, same for the tiny crabs (korea+japan) and taro's popularity since way back is because Japanese stuff is also very popular here.. As you can see, we can't helped but reflected those in our eats too.. Seriously you guys could've passed as Asians with those palate of yours haha Fyi black vinegar pork trotter (boiled with loads of ginger) is most recommended for post partum recovery & in the past was included in a baby's full moon gift pack to friends and families. Black vinegar is more earthy than astringent, kinda like balsamic vinegar with toned down acidity. I was kinda surprised you guys didn't try the salted egg fried food stall. I feel like you guys might enjoy the taste tremendously. Do come back again to Malaysia, with our multi cultural society, there's plenty to eat from different ethnic groups and some dishes which are influenced by other ethnic / culture as well XD Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Apam Balik basically is one of my favourite desserts, there are two version, one is the thicker which chewy and buttery peanut (more corn will be better) and the thinner which crispy like a snacks.
