A review / evaluation of my Kubota B2301 compact tractor after 100 hours of operation from the perspective of a first-time tractor owner/operator. In the video I speak on my impressions, thoughts, and observations in the following areas: 1) initial quality - the build and paint. 2) operations and controls - engine power, placement of controls, seating position, ease of operation, capabilities. 3) maintenance - accessibility to maintenance items, ease of (of difficulty of) performing maintenance, operator's manual. 4) miscellaneous features - items not covered in previous three topics. 5) Summary - overall impression and satisfaction with my Kubota B2301.

I generally use the turning brake with a rear implement, and no loader, for example while brush hogging you can make a pass then at the u turn point you lift your 3 point this takes the majority of the weight off of the front wheels turn the wheel and grab a brake and she will generally turn almost like a zero turn, however there are risk, so use this technique with caution.

Very detailed video. I also have owned the B2301 for 4 years now. Just installed the LA435 front loader recently so I can get more work done. And working on installing a 3rd function kit (OEM Kubota) so I can get a grapple. Thank you for sharing your experience with your tractor.

@@thecountrylivingproject3263 Update: I got the Kubota OE 3rd function and installed it myself. Pretty straightforward. And now I am looking for the grapple. I have my eye on a couple different ones but weight is a concern. I am trying to get one that's not too heavy. The two so far are the Precision Manufacturing 322 which weighs in at 264 lbs and $3,300 and the Homestead Pinnacle which weighs in at 302 lbs and is $2,200. Tough choice but I am leaning towards the Homestead. Do you have anything in mind?

Thank you very much for this video, I have the B2301 with loader and backhoe on order and will hopefully see it in about 2 months. My neighbor has a JD I've borrowed for years and a friend has a Kubota, I don't see any advantage to the JD other than they are a few thousand more, I can't find any several thousand dollar advantage except maybe the paint?? As you said it isn't a sports car. This made me feel secure about my purchase. Funny about tech manuals, I was a factory rep for Carrier (HVAC) and when you mentioned the manuals I identify with that, tried to get them to change things, edit, reword, organize like items to one area, all I ever got from higher ups was "Carrier is like a big cruise ship and you can't turn those on a dime". I was hedging between the 2301 & 2601, again I don't the several thousand more for 3 hp. For 30hp maybe.

Probably the best review on youtube. I had a BX2380 on order, but the dealer wont have in stock for who-knows-how-long, but they do have the B2301, which 3-point and Loader wise is quite a bit more than the BX. I'll be buying the B2301.

The double brake pedal serves as a traction director. With LSD differentials you may get into a situation were one tire is spinning and the other is sitting still. In this case you can apply slight pressure to the peddle restricting rotation of the tire without traction and shift some more power to the tire that is sitting still, Almost like Diff Lockers! This is very useful. This also helps in slippery cases like plowing snow. If your tractor wont steer right you can restrict power to the right rear tire! BOOM

To utilize the brake bias for tighter turning, you need to be in two wheel drive. In 4x4 the front tires will drag you around corners like that.
@thecountrylivingproject3263
@thecountrylivingproject3263 4 года назад
It was in 2WD for the demo, just too much grip on the front at that time. I have learned since, however, that when I have a heavy load on the back the front wheels get light and that's when the brake bias helps.

You are talented and your voice is one of your greatest assets. I have a B2601 and my beef with the treadle pedal has been reverse. I find it stiff and awkward. But it's getting better. I chocked the pedal with a 2x4 for a while trying to loosen the spring. May have helped but probably have just gotten used to it.

I hear you on opening the hood. On my B2601 I installed a 10 gauge wire loop in the 2 small holes when the hood is completely open under the front lip. Open the hood completely and look under the very bottom front lip for the 2 holes, feed the wire through and connect to each other with a heat shrink butt connector then you have a simple loop handle.

First time viewer, really enjoyed your insights. Loved the crashing sounds and tire rolling by. You should patent your bucket level indicator, if possible make it dual purpose so those of us with pallet forks could know when the bucket is level and when the forks are level, it’s almost always different. Thank you for a very good and informative video. Have a blessed day!

I found the dual brake pedals to be helpful while pushing snow on a blacktop driveway. When the bucket is down the front tires don’t grab as well to steer. Using one of the brake pedals helps me straighten the tractor out while pushing snow with the bucket down.

Great video , I can relate to a lot of your review, I too have wondered why is she struggling, and I looked down and you guessed it. now I make it a habit before I move the tractor to always push on the brake pedal, when I changed the fuel filter with mine the fuel gauge was on empty and a slow pour of fuel drained , being on empty the catch pan caught it all but the fuel pour never stopped. I bought mine to build a 150 foot driveway and level land next to my garage, to hire someone to do these jobs the quotes were around $25,000, Have a great one be careful.

I've also since developed the habit of releasing the brake every time I get on the tractor. Most of the time it's actually not set anyway. Good call on getting a tractor to DIY your driveway. Not only did you save a lot of $$$ but now you have a tractor to boot. Thanks for the comment.

Hey man this is the best and comprehensive vidio on compact tractors I have seen yet. Your skill set Lively hood talents have realy shined through. You should buy some more bigger tractors and go professional U tube vidio production. Reason why; you are a big guy this little kubogy is allways maxed out for you. I have a 54 hp kubogy , 36 hp M-F ,and a 21hp M-F and would like to get a 25-30 hp Branson. I retired (mostly) from contruction work (39years) and still have a good back. These handy dandy compact tractors are very usefull, but there is no "one right size for anybody" that is why I want another one. Maybe just " more money than brains". The kubogy MX5200 TLB was my first rig; way too big for the small stuff. Almost got a kubota B2650 but dicovered it is built like a tinker toy. It would of been the right size for "a two tractor ,I can do anything fleet". The next size is a L2501,3301or3901 a good choice for a universal "singleulare fleet" but primitive. My Massey-Ferguson 1736 is pure "Cadillac" but a bit big. The M-F 1020 is a 1988 model hydro-slack-o-matic with no loader, two wheel drive, no power steering rig but it was "cheep". A Branson 2515 or 3015 for you and me ( they are very inexpensive and built like tanks ;all steal and cast iron) would be a good next or first choice for many.

There is a trick that can help start the engine smoother when its extra cold out. You don't want to keep the glow plugs going for too long because it can cause them to wear prematurely. So you want to cycle them manually. Turn the key so the glow plugs come on for 10 seconds and then let go of the key without trying to start it. Count to 20 and then cycle the glow plugs for another 10 seconds and let go again. I usually cycle mine 3 times if temp is between 0 and 20 F.

Awesome videos thanks for sharing- My tractor was delivered without the lower retaining pins inserted into the 3 point swing arm adjustment pins. I have since left them without retaining pins. Gravity holds them in there just fine and I can remove and replace them easily. Only consideration would be if I flip the tractor, at that point the three point implement would be putting so much pressure on the pins they would be unlikely to fall out. Just some thoughts

The cutting breaks are for when you are carrying a heavy load on the 3 point or something of the sort where your front wheels loose traction and you need to turn at a faster rate than you would with the front tires skipping off the surface.

Using it with the tilt forward is pretty much using the till all the time, not to move it but if you got it without the tilt your wheel would be back quite a bit and make it much less comfortable for you since you’re tall. Glad you got it. Lol Skid steering or breaks steering is usually when your front end is pushing if you’re in mud and it’s really sloppy soft wet mud you’ll steering your tractor will just keep going forward if use the brake steer then it will steer a lot more like normal. When you’re sloshing around in the mud you’ll appreciate it like if you’re sliding downInto a ditch and your steering out of it but it’s just not going the skid steer will help quite a bit

Thanks, nice review. I downsized to a BX 2380. It is missing split breaks, which I miss. They are useful on my Yanmar 2020D. With out power steering, simply slowing down the inside wheel provides a boost. Instead of engaging the diff lock, simply add enough drag to equalize traction. Under conditions, like when back dragging or when the front gets lite with a heavy tong weight , the split breaks can help tracking, or steering. (hey you could fix my punctuation!) 32 hours later, I wonder if I went the right way. I miss the three point linear adjustment, as well. Your point on the repeatable stop looks warrented. I would consider adding an additional stop, on the up side. This could be set to avoid the pto shaft running at hard working angles. A bucket level indicator is new to me. Now I would miss it. Nice retrofit there. As delivered a number of things where painted shut on my BX. That hood ornament is my gun sight, especially on a first row. Yup er, the 'cuckoo clock' springs flew when I fell off the Yanmar. Ouch. Be safe Chris

The Turning break can be useful when pushing with the loader bucket and you lift the weight off the front steers causing you to lose traction

@thecountrylivingproject3263 3 года назад
I found that out later when running a friend's tractor with a rear finish mower and no loader up front. Light front end which resulted in zero turning when going up even a slight grade. Individual brakes came in handy then.

Note: The LX2601 has a parking brake indicator and an exhaust deflector. Might be worth seeing if the sensor for the brake and the deflector will bolt right on to the 2301. Worth asking the dealer, I suppose. Good luck on that!

Thanks for the tip. I've developed a habit of releasing the parking brake (even when it isn't on) every time I get on the tractor now, but definitely can still use the exhaust deflector.

Great video ! I like to address something else.When you working at dark back light on instrument panel/dashboard is horrible. Almost like they intend to camouflage temp, rpm and fuel level needles. I had 2680 before so back light was great, plus haven't notice low fuel level light indicator yet on 2601/2301 which was good indicator to refill BX 5 gal diesel can at once. More annoying is seat switch. Im just 185 lbs guy so any little hump or hole and tractor trying to shut off. Basically have to work with gravity and push my rear end down almost all the time.
@thecountrylivingproject3263
@thecountrylivingproject3263 4 года назад
My daughter has the same problem with the seat switch. She's too light and has to push on the steering column with her foot to keep her rear end down. I'm thinking either feed her more so she gains weight, or maybe cut a coil off the seat springs so she doesn't bounce up so high when hitting a bump.

Great review! I have the B2601 and love it. I think your loader should be level when it touches down. I added some grab hooks on my bucket recently. You can find the video on my channel and may find the mod useful. 5' 16" tall, haha. I like that. In time, you may want to add a 3rd function valve and grapple - you'll love it!

Great videos in anticipation of my b2601 whenever that comes in from the dealer. FYI watch some of the grapple videos that bent the frame. Think back if you ever picked up or tried to move something very heavy or stuck with one of the corners that might have bent the frame. Might want to try to reverse the process.

I'll do that. Although, I'm thinking the designers at Kubota would know to limit the strength of the hydraulics to be under the max weight of the loader, thus the hydraulics would stall before damage to the loader assembly would occur. But, I've worked with plenty of engineers at GM over the years to know not to trust engineers.

Great video - very informative. Currently looking at a B2401; it's my understanding the manual has much more pulling power than the HST.
@thecountrylivingproject3263
@thecountrylivingproject3263 4 года назад
It makes sense that a manual trans might be better than an HST for pulling. Is that 2401 a shuttle shift?
@scurrytom
@scurrytom 4 года назад
I just pulled the trigger on b2601. Had very briefly considered a B2401. My dealer says he doesn't even stock them, prefers hydro for this type of tractor. I've seen others note that as well. Unless you're setting and driving many acres, it's a pain(especially loader work with the constant back an forth... LOTS of shifting on a manual)
@DanielSon69
@DanielSon69 Год назад
@@thecountrylivingproject3263it’s not a shuttle shift. Old fashioned non-synchro shifting, definitely not ideal unless mowing large areas or pulling long distances. Not recommended if making lots of stops/starts or forwards/backwards movements.

Great video have the b2601 with the new quick detach front end loader. The treadle peddle sucks wish I had dual pedals instead.
@thecountrylivingproject3263

Dual pedal would free up some floor space as well. Sometimes I could use it when bringing a tool bag or something like that out to the field with me. That being said, it won't stop me from buying another Kubota when the time comes. I'll just add a carry-all or larger toolbox instead.

I enjoyed your review. I have a B2601 and my bucket tilts to the left looks like yours goes to the right when the edge touches. I wonder if it can be adjusted because it is wearing my bucket more on that side. It was like that from the beginning 1/2 inch off. I thought I was being picky so I didn't say anything to the dealer.

I have a 2601 and have never had the soot like everyone else has. Buy my diesel at the gas station not the farm coop. U Usually farm diesel has more additives in it. I just add 1 oz. of seafoam for each gallon of diesel. I also stops gelling of the fuel.
@thecountrylivingproject3263
@thecountrylivingproject3263 4 года назад
I get my diesel at the local gas station as well (off-road diesel). I believe everything is all ultra-low sulfur content no matter where you get it, so possibly other additives contribute to the soot. Maybe I'll try the Seafoam. Safe for diesels is it?

I've since learned that the proper application for those split brakes is when the front end has low traction. I found that out when driving a friend's L-series with a 60-inch rear mower deck, no FEL and no auxiliary weights on the front. Going up a slight incline the front is so light the only way to turn is to use the split brake. You are right, it can be abrupt. Thanks for the comment.
