The roller may not look it, but it tops the scale at close to 4,000 pounds. It does an awesome job and keeps the roadbed from washing too quickly after grading. The old Ford blade is quite heavy compared to the newer ones for sure.

Yeah, I've always gotten a chuckle out of the guys that say they'll flip on you easy....I've had mine places a billy goat couldn't go. Well that is a bit of an exaggeration I guess, but any tractor is only as safe as the operator. And there are some people that really shouldn't be on one at all !! LOL.

Heck yeah man, it was a fun afternoon. Not too cold and no snow or mud to deal with. Nothing broke down and it was a good day to be alive. There's two things my sil did good and that's he gave me two granddaughters and he lets me borrow his new tractor. LOL. Well there's at least one or two other things he's done good too... Thank you GP for the comment and I apologize for missing it the first time around. You're right about the roller. It is a wonderful aid for grading the road. I don't remember if it was pointed out in the video, but one real cool thing is it, because of its enormous weight, literally pulverized a lot of the larger creek rock. So the big ones really do not create much of an issue in settling down the road surface. If it IS a little wet, the roller smooshes the big ones into the base and if its dry enough, the roller will succeed in breaking them into smaller pieces. You bring up a good point too... Do you know why John Deeres are green ??? They're envious of the red ones doing all the work..... LOL. (That's a Massey and Farmall owners joke). Shhhhhhh ! Just don't tell that to a JD fan. lolol. Hidden Valley Homestead something to think about is the possible limitations a larger tractor like the 4701 may bring. I think the 3901 and the 3301 are the same footprint but don’t quote me on that. That’s a question for the dealer. It also depends on what exactly you want to use it for. I have much bigger tractors to do a lot of the work but I prefer the littler ones most of the time for their agility as well as their economy. I have a B2400 as well as a B3030 and an older B7100. I love them all. But I still love those old antiques as well. 😁 thank you so much for watching and commenting. It’s appreciated greatly !!

We had two 44's back on the farm. One fitted with the Massey Harris loader for loading the manure pile and other chores around the farm. The 44 is my favorite tractor of all time and is referenced by my username, Tractorman44. I bet you wish you still had your Grandpa's old 44 don't you.

I really DO like his new L3301 though. I mistakenly called it a B series. And I would really rather beat up my old implements than his nice new stuff. Heck, he should have the honor of making the first scratches in the paint, right? LOL. Yep, busy just ain't quite the right word is it... Retirement is hell. (-:

Thank you Bill for the nice comment sir. This particular model of Massey was the direct competitor to the Farmall H. They are comparable in weight and size, though the H had a little higher ground speed due to the typical larger rears. The gears in these old transmissions spend so many hours grinding together, that I think that's where the 'third gear whine' comes from. Third and reverse are typically the most used gears on tractors of this era and there is a lot of commonality that goes with them. The main thing is they ALL bring a smile to the 'seasoned' operator no matter what color or number of cylinders the old gals have. Thanks again Bill for taking the time to watch and comment !! You're right about when to grade... Dry enough you don't make muck, but moist enough to allow you to churn it up. You have to dig below the potholes depth, churn it all up and then pack it all in. If not, rainwater will soak into the soft material in the potholes and car tires will just bounce it all back out again within no time.

@@houndsmanone4563 It's the drive roll from a smaller commercial asphalt/rock roller. Essentially the roller was cut in half and the larger rear roll was used instead of the smaller front roll.

Now Joe, if you welded railroad spikes to this roller, you could bust your 3" or 4" of snow pack/ice then shift it off your driveway with the loader or front blade. Then you too could see what your drive way looks like in the spring !! LOL. Spring is nice though and is my favorite time of the year. You'll get there soon mon ami. Flowers are blooming all over down here already.

At that rate it'd take no time to get to Pennsylvania. Lessee 70 mph behind the truck multiplies out to...what....280 MPH !!?? I'm wondering what model Farmall was your Grandfathers... You're a tad older than me...I'm the youngster of the group born in '51 LOL. Well, we had electricity but the three rooms in our old house had two with just a bulb hanging down the center on a wire and one with an actual glass bowl over the bulb... And on a side note, my Grandfather's dairy had phone number 1 in the county. I still have one of the old milk bottles with the embossed information in the glass with the name of the dairy (our surname) and Phone Number 1 in the dead center. Tractorman44 I've been busy too! Lots of spring stuff to do and I have to replace my wife's sliding door in her studio. I used a free used one when I first installed it a out 20 years ago and it is just plum worn out. The seals in the glass ain't so good anymore either. Turns out Lowes had one on sale. But it can't be carried up our narrow stairs so it has to be taken over the ten foot deck plus the railing. I had them deliver it since my friend and I weren't sure how to tie it down in his six foot truck bed. I said if we try it we'd better get an ambulance on stand by with we old dudes. Soon Friday I have three more friends coming to push and shove. I took 3 2x6 X 12 and screwed them down to make a ramp. Ropes and five guys should do it. I installed and carried one on the other side of the house about ten years ago. The frame came in a box and the panels separately so I could get it in my Honda Element easily. It was a a pretty easy job. Now the unit is in one piece. You can take the door our but what a pain. As far as my Grandfathers Farmall I'll have to check out some old photos. So you were a 51 guy? Well you're just a spring chicken. And I'll be waiting for you text from your tractor. So keep on keepin on Tractorman 44. I do believe we will meet one day. Enjoy this lovely Spring! Tractorman44 Boy Tractorman, if I had a few young bucks like yourself I could just watch em too! I actually rounded up five friends and with me six. So I'll have to get an ambulance on stand by fer ser! My one friend is actually older than me and I think he fought in the Civil War,,,,may be. I was looking a bit for a picture of that old tractor and I will find it eventually. It's always in the last box you look in it seems. I'll have to ask my cousin since he was raised up beside the farm and his dad worked it as well as my Grandparents. They had about 10,000 chickens, three floors in the barn and a couple thousand pullets in the field. Used to pull the old wagon and fill up a few wooden barrels with water and feed for the pullets. Later as I got older and the black plastic pipe became a common thing,they ran a line the few hundred yards. I remember you Grandfather saying that they didn't get electric back their road until after WWII, in 1947. I remember the seven party line phone too. He knew there was always a nosey neighbor listening in. So one time when he knew she was on talk about how terrible a fight me and the wife had. Said she was throwing plates and pans at him and nearly trashed the kitchen. At that time my Dad was dating my Mom. He lived about 25 miles north of the farm and at that time the roads weren't the best in the country. When my dad got home his sister said, did you know your future in laws have terrible fights. This was a day later. When my Garndfather heard about this he and my Grandma nearly messed the kitchen laughing. So back in that day the gossip spread very fast. This same neighbor would make her bloomers out of old feed sacks and as you know they were fabric and printed with the mills name. When he past her farm and saw her wash on the line and a big pair of bloomers with a huge picture of a rooster on the ass he nearly drove off the road laughing. Nothin like the old stories and I listened and learned many great ones. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. First thing I must go get some doughnuts for the boys and make extra JO. Not long ago I would have figured out how I could do it myself Sometimes I wonder now how I did something years past. So, a fine as frogs hair spring day to You Tractorman and plan on at least 15-18 hours to get here to grade my lane. And I'm sure that tractor must get at least 40-50 MPG, eh? DaveyJO

Best kinda friends too. We had a party line in the fifties as well. BAH !! Snow, ice...muck and mud. We deal with it all the time. The potholes get so big you can't dodge them ! And when its that bad, there ain''t nothing that helps except tons and tons of rock or gravel. We are going to haul in a lot more this year. There's something wanky going on because I specifically remember replying to you Coy, simply because you are almost a neighbor living so close. I just don't remember what I said. But you're right, the older stuff seemed to have a bit more metal in them even the replaceable cutting edges had more meat. I have an ancient John Deere blade with a 500 pound weight on it that is just about indestructible !!!

Between ol' Joe and Gord at GPoutdoors I have been the beneficiary of quite a number of subscribers. I thank them immensely for the shout outs too !! That roller is the rear drive roller off of a commercial rock and asphalt roller. I'm actually guestimating the weight as there's no easy way for me to weigh it. But compared to how the old truck grunts and the trailer pulls with either it OR one of the 4,000 pound larger tractors it has to be close to that mark. It is built of 3/4" steel plate for the round part of the roller with 1" steel sides to the drum, solid steel axle and filled with at least 75 gallons of oil. But admittedly, it is still an estimate... And no additional weight is required. LOL. The draw bar is really nice too, especially if your roadway is lined with overhanging limbs or brush. Fire up the welder Reg, build that thing !! If you live on gravel, you won't be sorry. Thanks for commenting sir.

@@tractorman4461 Yes, I see where you get the weight of the roller, it must be close to that 4000 pound weight, 'guesstimated' of course. I have started on my roller 'system'. I have two rollers/drums from a 36 inch wide double drum , walk behind roller compactor. so I trying to figure out if I should have them in tandem or side by side; right now I'm thinking I should have them in tandem , with walking beam type carriage. Ah well, we'll see how this pans out by n by. Cheers!

Reg Sparkes heck yeah man, go for it !! Anything at all is much better than nothing. The tandem does seem to be a bit more complicated vs. side by side but that’s without seeing exactly what you are starting with. Whatever you build, build it heavy to withstand shock. Because there will be a LOT of that going on especially if you use creek rock.

@@tractorman4461 Yes I agree that it should be built very sturdily indeed, because there's a lot of static and kinetic weight being moved around, isn't there? My dear Wife used to say " whatever Reg builds will never fall apart." I think she was referring to my 'slight' over building of things I made back then. LOL.

Doggone Greg !! I just stopped by the local dealer today and they informed me they were fresh out. They said the new delivery of those particular factory specials have been delayed indefinitely. Can you believe that !! Dang it anyway. We BOTH missed the boat. )-: LOL

37South I think most all compact tractors of today are really pretty good. Mostly as we get older the ergonomics of the machine become more of a selling point. My suggestion would be to select the models of the various brands that interest you then go sit on them and imagine yourself 30 years older and using the same machine. John Deere has some very good tractors as well as Kubota, Kioti, Massey Ferguson and others do. I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on a JD if the opportunity came my way. I borrowed a buddies 50 hp (iirc) JD to load some limestone foundation blocks last year. And I loved it !! I did a video with JD and Limestones in the title. I can’t copy it here on the I phone but I’ll do it later on the computer for you.

Tractorman44 thanks for the response. We made a decision yesterday and went with the JD. It came down to my wife liking the controls on the Deere the best and the package deal that JD offered was actually better than Kubota and mahindra by quite a lot. We did as much research as we could up to that point and after finally speaking with salesmen at each dealer in our area the JD was the most knowledgeable, straight forward and easy to understand out of them all. The Kubota salesman was actually the worst by far. Very confusing and “salesman like” comments turned me off soon as I walked in the door. Too bad cause I was leaning toward Kubota the entire time. Well up until we got serious anyway. It’s like you said tho, gonna come down to what fits a person best cause they all seem to be good tractors. Or at least that’s what I keep hearing. @@37south47 I know you'll be satisfied with the choice. They all have little quirks that show up, like on my little Kubota B3030 the hood can't be raised without unbolting the brush guard in front. I'm going to have to slot the holes and tilt it forward a couple degrees so it'll clear. Go figure huh. We all have to agree that all salesmen are not created equal. Some turn me off with the first comment others feel like we are sitting at a BBQ enjoying the afternoon. The way I figure it, if I keep the Missus happy, I can get away with a lot more than if she's not...shall we say....'comfortable'.LOL Thanks again for watching and commenting sir.
