August, 1993 Seattle. Kurt Cobain from Nirvana. The original video was region blocked so I re-uploaded it here and managed to get the copyright claims lifted.
I've never cried so much for a famous person. And I'll tell you why. First of all, this guy was such a sweet guy, open minded and intelligent. He literally thought 30 years ahead. Kurt's ideas were not appreciated at that time, but now we come in conclusion that it's right. Rest in peace brother.
Just the complete lack of pretension in the guy. Totally down to earth, without any of the bullshit rockstar persona that those who have followed in his footsteps always seem to wear.
for me that person is Dimebag Darrell from Pantera. known for being the nicest guy ppl ever met and he was a god on the guitar. both of them are missed
yea it is but thanks man i posted it on tumblr, if you like that u might like to check out the rest of my blog just search laqueens.tumblr.com ! alot of cool photos and art and shit
womankiller420 I agree with etherealmist76 about your first comment. And let me tell you that you can post direct links on YT now. Just give it a try by editing your post.No need for cripled dotcom stuff anymore.
***** she introduces herself at the beginning of the video... she does "book shows" and talks to different people about books they have read, and how they inspire people and what they learned from it...so she's just randomly interviewing him, he has a few books that helped him along the way so he starts talking about them and it just morphs into other questions. They get along and it's a very nice interview because like womankiller420 says in the comments above they're just vibing off each other, and they have a cool dynamic no pre written mumbo jumbo, just honest conversation....
This is an awesome interview, with an amazing guy, but there's one tiny detail that gave me a whole new level of respect for Kurt - he blew his smoke away from the interviewer. Having been around a great deal of smokers, it is extremely uncommon for someone to consider your personal feelings in comparison to their own and blow the smoke in a different direction. It's a small thing, but it shows how genuinely nice Kurt was.
+Dan Dunning I do the same thing...although it's unfortunate I smoke, I don't believe others should have to breathe in that crap. I always make sure that others' comfort is above mine when it comes to vices...after all, I wouldn't want anyone blowing smoke at me either. Kurt was just a normal guy in an extraordinary position...it was just too much for him.
even though I smoke now I always take other people's health into consideration. growing up my step dad would hotbox the car in the winter with smoke and not even crack the window lol. I'm 23 and if I take my nephew some where I won't smoke because I know he hates it. if I'm with someone that don't mind I always blow smoke in the opposite direction and have the window down enough to vent because I know from being a kid that was horrible.
This is a guy you could just chill on a couch and have a beer and an awesome conversation with. If people like him don't belong in this world, I don't wanna be on this shitty planet.
lol do you think this comment makes you sounds cool? you can always die... but youre not gonna do anything are you? because you dont actually want to die... you just want drama
Kurt defended women, gays and people of color before it was cool! Seriously, look at all the testosterone-fueled, macho bands of his time: Guns 'n Roses, Whitesnake, Ratt, Warrant, Poison, etc. Kurt wasn't afraid to be different or stand up for the underdog.
+KidScipio i think he would hate the fact that its "cool" rather than standard. but i think people who are compassionate are always happy when understanding triumphs over prejudice
+KidScipio i think he would hate the fact that its "cool" rather than standard. but i think people who are compassionate are always happy when understanding triumphs over prejudice
This man had more talent in his little finger than 90% of anyone in the US or UK charts today. It's sad, I don't know when we'll even see anything like him again. LEGEND!
Matt Daniels I think it's true. His suicide note was written in 3 different handwritings, he was found with enough heroin in his system to kill him anyways and the fact that she wanted his money but if he went through the divorce she wouldn't get any of it Also a piece of paper found in her back pocket showed her trying to imitate Kurt's handwriting
They questioned the owner of the gun shop and Kurt had in fact gone in a purchased the exact gun he shot himself with on the exact day. Remember courtney removed all the guns from the house out of fear Kurt would hurt himself.
Matt Daniels No. Kurt bought a shotgun forever before he killed himself. It was used to security in the house for awhile and they keeped it in their closet.
Eh, no. The gun he used was purchased shortly before death. Read the reports not the speculation. Secondly no. It was not in three different hand writings it was in two. Both the same hand writing. It had appeared his first pen had run out of ink. And the second line was simply in a different colored ink.
Richard Thomas That's awesome you held a class period solely to teach about Nirvana, and I really hope your students payed attention too, because the dramatic effect Kurt had on the music industry is nothing short of iconic. It should be shared with anyone with an interest in music. He completely changed the game, and was nothing short of brilliant in so many ways. Kurt is my hero as well...
Yeah, I teach a class on popular music at my college every year. Love it when I get to Nirvana--whole 50 minutes. I think some of the students were a bit taken back by "Rape Me". ha ha...
Incredible interview. I love that the interviewer just lets him talk. I love the close ups. He is so so incredibly self aware and honest. Love love love.
this interview is in 93', Cobain had already been to rehab for heroin in 92'. I highly doubt he was sober in 93'. Not to mention, drugs made kurt cobain, Kurt Cobain. If you like him, you should love him for who he was.
people like Kurt ,Jimmy Hendrix,Elvis,Janis Joplin,Jim Morrison and others were just such special people that they were only allowed about 27 years each on this planet because they were just so ahead of their time and if they would have been here any longer they would have changed the planet so much. I truly believe that these people are 1 in billion
+Hayden Farmer Sorry, but please have some respect for the dead, and realize you have no idea what she was going through in her life that made her become an addict. It is a difficult life to lead. Glamorous, but terrifying. Respect her talent and memory.
This is a phenomenal interview, so much genuine communication between these two people. It's almost like this conversation was a pivotal moment in both of their lives.
As someone who wouldn't exactly themselves a "Nirvana fan", and I hardly know anything about them, and Kurt Cobain, all I can say is he definitely sounds like a genuine down to earth guy that just wanted to to be happy, and didn't want to hurt anyone. I definitely respect him as a artist, and a human being, and we could use more people like him
Aldrich Leblanc Im not poisoning anything-...to some people he was a "great artist" (snuurrk), but to most he was just another lowlife junkie scumbag--either way, he had his fifteen minutes and its time to move on
Renee lizette martinez Neither you or anyone else on here knows how much he made after he died. That is meaningless anyway....making money does not mean your a good human being, it means yr good at making money--and besides, he wouldnt have made a dime if he didnt have a record company, a producer, engineers, studios promotional companys etc,. He was just a druggie with a guitar...Krist is a friend of mie and we still see each other a couple of times a year--he feels the same way I do -everyone agrees Cobain should just be forgotten and soon he will be...that is just the way nature works
BlankUberEverybody Cobain did one thing wrong, he left his child to grow up without a father. However, it doesn't take much to see that he was a fragile human being that easily gave into weaknesses. Your vendetta against him seems so angry though, maybe calm down a little, friend.
Fascinating person/interview. He appears here as a simple guy and gets more defensive as the interview goes on, and she gets him calm again talking about the artists/art. A pure artist he was and really still is. His laugh was very cool. Such a loss to rock/pop music.
For some reason I am always so fascinated by Kurt Cobain. His life, his music, and his troubles. Something about him is so mystifying and not in a romantic kind of way. Just in an interesting/curious perspective. He is a truly unique person and I don't know. I felt like he is sort of immortalized.
French Montana he was Jesus incarnate! We can easily spot those amazing souls. Jesus was also against society and its treatment of others. They were both killed because their message would have moved mountains if given the proper time to do so.
This is the saddest part, geniuses are the most misunderstood people, we are mad, no one really understands what we see and what we mean and because of this we spend our lives alone with no one by our side to really comprehend us, that's the price of the mind we got.
The multiple grammatical errors in your run-on sentence are clear evidence that you're most likely NOT a genius. Geniuses don't usually spend time flattering themselves in the comment section of a RU-vid video about Kurt Cobain.
no genious ever pedestalled themselves and labeled themselves as geniuses. it sound wrong. its an achivement from creativity that is recognised by the masses, that gives you that recognition. son
Alana Rose His left shoe says FUHGAWZ, and his right says foogauzie. Kurt Cobain apparently wrote “FUHGAWZ” on his left shoe to make fun of Peal Jam’s Eddie Vedder. Vedder once wrote “Fuhgawz” on his shirt just before a photo shoot, intentionally misspelling the word Fugazi, which is a punk band from Washington, DC. Kurt who didn’t like Pearl Jam did this to basically make fun of Vedder.
***** A bright person is more inclined to because he understands something others don't see or feel. If you think killing yourself is easy than you yourself, are the non intellectual.
I never said it was "brave" but the simple fact of the matter is, is that a personal who suffers from severe depression interrupts things differently. And to sit and say that committing suicide is the "easy" way out is ludicrous. Troops over seas who suffer from PTSD who commit suicide get labeled as heros while those who suffer silently simply "take the easy way out."
Matt Daniels One in his mind it was the easy way out. reason he felt as he had no hope. and that he could not go on living. NO ONE should be labeled a hero for taking their life. PTSD is much worse then what he might have been going through (again might) the fact of the matter is. someone was there telling him not to do it the whole time. he knew what he was about to do was wrong. he left is kid behind. now SHE has to grow up with out a dad. never knowing what it would be like to have a dad. in her mind she might be thinking even she was not enough to keep him around. he a banded her. and the one that was there telling him to stop. was Christ Himself, but kurt has free will. and kurt sent himself to hell. he is in hell fire with demons now and all his problems went with him. God bless his kid. God tried to bless kurt, but he rejected it and stayed on the road to hell himself. no ones fault, but his. he even shot up with drugs before he pulled the trigger to make it (EASIER on HIM) easy way out? more like the fools way out. BC hell is on the other side waiting. and it is moved to meet you at your coming. Isaiah 14:9
If you truly believe you experience "fire and brimstone" after you die this conversation is over. With your Christian logic every soldier who goes over seas to die will essentially end up in hell. They're leaving their kids behind and are fully aware that they are going into a situation to die? So with your logic they're going burn in hell? This is why I can't stand religion. It puts an asterisk next to "hero". Tell me what's the difference between turning a knife on yourself and entering an area where knives are forcibly turned upon you. There's none they're both stupid decisions.
2:43 *IN CASE ANYONE IS WONDERING WHAT'S WRITTEN ON HIS SHOES* Left shoe: FUHGAWZ . . Right shoe: FOOGAUZIE "Fugazi" is a band and it's misspelled intentionally. #THEMOREYOUKNOW
I don't know why but I am so fascinated by Kurt's personality very down to earth guy I own 2 of his books have 3 posters of Nirvana and 1 painting of him that I happen to come by at a down town flea market but anyways that's my cup of tea for the day :P R.I.P. Rock in peace
Me too. He seems like a very intelligent and down to earth guy who had interesting views on life and fame which, I think, made him different to other singers.
Everytime i hear his music or looking at an interview, he remembers me of my father. He and my mom take heroin and gave me away 20 years ago. but now i know my father and no matter how much cocain or heroin he tooked, he's a lovely person and he loves me more than drugs or anything else. that's the reason why he's clean now after 25 years. I wish Kurt has had the discipline and the will like my father. I came 2 month to late and i think the best moments i wish to have can't happen without hear kurts music at a concert. R.I.P
I think Kurt was an inspiring and sincere person, some people seem to disagree with that, but he was truly something special, intelligent, just wonderful. I do wish he could still be here today. Nirvana made some really great music together and it'd be cool to see what they could've come up with now, I also loved Kurt Cobain's voice. He will always inspire me
I spoke to Cobain on the phone in Jan 1994 and I've been trying to disprove whether it was him I spoke to or not. Anyway, the person I talked to when I asked why his phone number was unlisted (it was listed under Curt Cobain) said very memorably : "I don't want to be no fucking star man"
meatcurtains Is this a troll comment or is this based on actual knowledge? Judging by "some" of your other comments on other videos, you don't appear to be the grand wizard of credibility.
mysteryjesus I laughed at this, the grand wizard of credibility hahahaha! With a name like meat curtains I didnt think he was either. What happened with your phone call story then?
Not much has happened. I still can't prove it. I know I called the phone number of a Curt Cobain. My friends even went to Seattle in 1994 and tore a page out of the phone book with that name on it. Now all I wish I could prove is if that was actually his number. I can't seem to prove it. If I had a series of phone books from Seattle in the 90's until Courtney sold the house, I could maybe come up with clues. But as it stands, I can't find out more.
Great interview and a really nice insight into the real Kurt Cobain. He did not look like a man who was battling inner demons and was entertaining the thought of suicide which happened some 8 or so months after this interview.
Erika Ehm was always one of the worst VJs on Much but I remember the day this interview aired she actually pulled it together and did one of the best Cobain interviews ever. Brings back great memories of the music scene in the U.S and Canada at the time. Thanks for posting this video!!!!
for what he battled, the addictions, chronic pain, family trauma, he single-handily defied the human spirit at how much one can do with so much going on. I personally don't think anybody could diagnose him with a proper mental illness. it was whenever his stomach didn't hurt, he was happy or whenever his scoliosis wasn't bothering him, he was fine. Kurt'd still be here today if he were never an avid user of heroin & I think he was so beautiful in just his pure presence
How sad we lost Kurt so young. He obviously had a lot more to come. He really understood artistic expression through various media in a way that is rarely found today. I miss him. X
hearing him talk about the next nirvana album and a full length with William Burroughs is pretty disappointing I can only imagine how great it would have been.
This really is a beautiful and awesome video!!! Thank you for uploading this video!!! Thank you FATHER, thank you for Nirvana, Thank you Nirvana, Thank you Kurt. I was blessed to be on the planet when you were singing for us.
So happy that this interview exists to show how he truly was. A real, down to earth dude from Aberdeen. Matter of fact he was too down to earth. Miss him and his music greatly. For those that grew up with Nirvanas music, it was THE defining music of a generation. Kobain never intended to get rich and famous.
I wish there was a time machine So we can all go back and maybe meet him in person and admire his talent physically.. It's such a great shame that he's dead:,(
I've been a big Nirvana fan for about six years and I always find that I come back to this particular interview. Partly because In Utero was my favorite record by them and remains one of my favorite albums of all time, but also, for some reason, this interview doesn't really seem to play into the mythos of Kurt Cobain. I mean, obviously, it was months before he died, but it frames him as a regular, relatable human being which I think emphasizes why Nirvana's music has a such strong resonation.
It seems like Kurt is very gracious in this interview and he appreciates that the reporter doesn't try to take advantage of it - he can tell she's not very experienced and is trying to do an honest interview, so it ends up going really well. Great video.
Off topic: Wow, weird seeing the Kingdome in the background now. On topic: Thanks for uploading this, it's great to see this side of him. RIP Kurt and Frances (if you ever see this) I wish you the best.
I really wish I could've met him but I could've of because I was born in 02 and he passed in 94. He honestly just seems like a blunt yet nice and intelligent person. And there aren't much people who were like that now a days.
He looked so much healthier, happier, prettier, hotter, sexier, funnier, smarter, etc. That light in his eyes, that power to his core, the essence to his fire, that wisdom, knowledge, facts, truths, stories, testimonies, behind it all. Nirvana won't ever be the same without Kurt Cobain. This interview is the most precious rare gem. 🎸
"We were gonna hire a lowyer, but instead we hired a hitman..." "What?" "What?" Rest in peace dude, we all miss you! (One year ago today the comment was made)
My ex boyfriend had the same blue eyes and the exact same sounding voice, I never noticed or listened to any of Kurt's interviews until recently, and it's crazy how someone can remind you of someone else. My ex was a manic depressive schizophrenic but when I met him he was taking his medication, so most of the time it made him sleep, but he mirrored a lot of similar qualities...only after he went off his medicine did he have problems and we were long broken up by then. Kurt is so sensitive and sweet time goes by so fast, in 1993 I was just in 11th grade busy going to cosmetology classes, and I specifically remember when "smells like teen spirit" came out, funny how they came up with that title of the song, Kurt smelled like his girlfriend's deodorant at the time, it was a joke back then, and I thought there was some real meaning behind it, even weirder how the video went with the title, it was like meant to be...I wonder what he would be doing today if he was still here.
Martin Joyce He would be writing and painting. He didn't care for money enough. He'd rather be poor on the street with a napkin and a pencil with no eraser.
I can remember in high school trying to get to homeroom for attendance in the last 8 minutes a song would come on the intercom while everyone rushed in the halls Smells Like Teen Spirit would be playing and then the bell would ring...the girl that sat next to me had R.E.M in big block letters on her notebook cover....it was a cool time back then, I wish I knew it back then though....
I don't get why everyone keeps saying "Ever since Kurt Cobain died, music has lost all talent and meaning" ect. Maybe if you looked beyond what you hear on the radio you'd find music with passion and meaning.
He seems so sincere, like a real person. I'm not the type of person to normally spew hate on new music and new culture, but you see these new celebrities and theyre so media trained and so programmed that they dont seem real. I guess celebrities have been like that forever though.... Kurts just special I think
This is what drugs and depression can do taking away a beautiful soul who had a beautiful daughter he dearly loved. He was so sweet and had the sweetest laugh. Attractive but it just a different way.The interviewer was sweet and respectful as well. This is nothing against Courtney but he needed a stable woman in his life. She had problems herself. And i still say his father could have done more. I think he could have been the one to save him. If he had stepped up and given him the love he should have.
I read the diaries of Kurt Cobain and he truly is a genius because whether your an angst ridden teen, or a 9 to 5 average joe, you can still have your own interpretations of his journal entries. Me being a kid from queens ny, who was born 1991 i was surrounded by a lot of rap, especially from 1994 to 2000, and eminem was god to me back than which is only natural considering i was 3 when kurt died. But once the rap became so over dramatized with no substance i started listening to bands of Nu Metal like Linkin Park, Disturbed, Slipknot, System of a Down etc. Those bands had more substance that i was looking for in music but once again some of them were a stretch to make there point across in a song, so i decided to go back to the 90s and 80s. At first i saw on youtube the 100 greatest artists of all time, saw the Guns N Roses segment and fell in love with the band right there, only because as a kid i thought they were an old rock band that my pops put me on to, than i saw Axl for the first time when i was a kid during the 2001 vma's, and Axl was terrible but later on when i saw that excerpt of GnR i saw a young Axl trying to make his way through Cali, hungry for glory, and was ready to bulldoze anyone in his way, (similar to what im trying to do) energetic with a chip on his shoulder and that voice which could be a sweet dull whisper to when hes screaming bloody murder. After i found out about Kurt Cobain, through a beef that Axl and Kurt had and because rappers were using Cobain references in there music for the last 15 years, so out of curiosity i checked out Nirvana and fell in love with them and was able to relate to him by also being an opiate addict. And being an ex addict and reading his diaries i was able to really understand his feelings and made me feel closer to him as an individual and not the music icon of generation X. So I did read his diaries and did discover who he was and because of him my entire outlook on music has changed, where now im listening to music that conveys a message or a song that reminds you of your past or present, that makes you feel like only you and the artist understand. Thanks Kurt. All of your fans will forever be indebted to you.
Wow, I really wish I could have heard what they were going to do with their next album... He's talking about how they're done with grunge and are going to move onto something new, re-invent new wave(?!) I bet it would have been amazing...
He apparently was going to work with Michael stipe of REM and work on some more mellower melodic jams with lots of strings. It would have been no doubt his masterpiece! What a Shame to go from us like that. The world loved him but the media and inner circle record pigs drove him insane. It breaks my heart when she candidly tells him how amazingly nice and peaceful good vibes he seemed to radiate effortlessly
Erica is really that good as an interviewer. KC wouldn't have been so delightfully prosaic; so damned conventional and open to slight flights of philosophy, if he did like the questions, most of which were only tangentially connected to his music. Thank you for this, EE.
Kurt doesn't seem to have an "american mind", excuse my expression... I wish more people all over the world can see the beautiful soul he was, he says great things he was never fake just spontaneous n' he was just too human.. like too good for this world, I'm sure.
You obviously aren't from America. That stereotype about Americans isn't true. I've lived in the U.S. my entire life, and I've met so many kind, genuine people.
Very true Veneris, so well said! Gee, I wonder where this stereotype of Americans being belligerent, overcompetetive, obnoxious, arrogant, egocentic, spoilt, pejorative, loud mouth braggets came from? :p Don't get me wrong I hate Australians too, my country has become a miniAmerica, and the history of selfish and greedy actions of the human race has digusted me since dawn of civilisation. kill the internet!!!
It comes from the media and movies. Americans come from all walks of life and can't really be put in one stereotype here. We think and act as individuals. We are a very diverse country. People say Americans are all fat or loud, but what they don't seem to remember is how we always have the best athletes and we dominate the Olympics. Gyms are a big thing here. Just because the youtube users you see look and act fake doesn't mean that is what we are all about here. I just want to clear the record on that.
A lot of people say that he sounds depressed, but I talk like that. I've always talked like that. I'm just super calm and quite. They are people like that. I mean there are people that are super loud and seemingly happy, but they might be depressed. Just don't assume, man.
He's such a down to earth person here, really good sense of humor. I'm not buying the suicide story, that was just what Courtney presented to the media and the media made headlines and a big deal out of it. I just feel sorry for Kurt as a person, that most people will remember him, that he died as victim of the rock 'n' roll music business like many before as junkie in a desperate moment...
Karem Safa, I'M REALLY GETTING SICK OF THESE PEOPLE COMING ON NIRVANA VIDEOS AND MAKING THESE BOGUS COMMENTS ABOUT KURT!! Were you there when he said ANYTHING suicidal, if so, prove it!! HOW DARE YOU SAY "He was always saying things about committing suicide", or " he was always so depressed". If you can't prove it, keep your mouth shut andyur
people like to pick apart and decipher this guy. he just keeps it real.. if he would have lived, anyone having the chance to meet him, would feel as comfortable as they would with a best friend.. he was a good person. had a big heart, was sensitive, also had a lot of self loathing. i was in a relationship with someone like that. that self loathing is so deep seeded in these types of people that its heart breaking.. point im making is, when you think of kurt, think of a friend. thats what he was.
Kurt Cobain + Nirvana = Legends, I don't care what anybody says, this intelligent, articulate, loving family man, full of ideas and so full of life DID NOT KILL HIMSELF
Finally a person who doesn't buy the lies. There's WAAAAYYYY TOO MUCH evidence that leans towards murder. I could point it all out but I'm sure ur already well aware.
Kurt basically just said the exact opposite of what ended his "suicide" note (the part that wasn't his hand writing) @17:07 Kurt basically says "Its better to fade away than burn out" He's saying He would rather be forgotten, than be a legend and die at the peak of his career by doing what sells records. Think about it.
