This has got to be one of the best Candy Apple Red paint jobs I have seen. I love how deep the color goes. This is one of those paint jobs that just from looking at it, you know a lot of time, effort and knowledge went into it. Just Magnificent!!

Brother I don't even do body work or paint and your video had my ass glued from beginning to ending. Never saw such great craftsmanship of candy painting with great precision, especially how you continuously held that gun along with your walk to give it the perfect painting. Man you should have a cool ass nickname like Auto Picasso. I'm 51 years old and feel like I need to take this trade up just for a hobby for my own cars. Man I love watching people who take great pride in their work they do for others and still able to get paid very well for great service. Now that's the American way. Thank you for sharing such an eye opener. Great education last forever when set in the mind the correct way. Peace & Blessings my brother.

A second comment....the video though long is worth watching a few times or more. Newcomers, young people, even if you take a shop class you cant get your TEACHER to sit down and tell you all this. In my time there was no YT, no nothing, just your hands and brain and it was tough learning. Today, with material and supply and equipment costs so high its easy for a newcomer to get discouraged so take the lessons here while there is still someone left on the planet who gives a damn enough to teach it. Jon is the real deal and thats the real work. There is much more to learn but right here is a million dollars worth of knowledge to get you started. Take the gift!

Mr. Kosmoski, you are a true Master! I'm a teacher and I work everyday with young people at a technical high school and day in and day out I tell them that craftsmanship is everything! NO matter what one does, there is a right way and a wrong way. THIS IS THE RIGHT WAY. Yes can some people skip a few steps or do a variation of what you are doing? Sure, but no one can say that your approach wont give someone amazing results. Want something to come out amazing? Then you gotta put in the time in the preparation! Amazing... can't wait to get to work on any one of my project cars! My respects!

I like that orbital air file. I've been a painter for 47 yrs and like this video lesson. Of course we all have too make a living and all these steps in this lesson are for a custom job. Custom jobs get custom pay and custom complaints by very picky customers. The material used here are representative of a 10000 dollar job. If you can get the 10grand then all this effort and material justify the job. You also better charge for the comeback because unless there is some sort of miracle there will be problems. This lesson is the best lesson I've seen to insure the least amount of problems. The average guy this video is intended for would not know what to do, where and why to do it. Only an experienced joe such as myself could benefit from this effort. Not that I do not already know but it's good to refresh your talent. Great lesson thanks.

Learned years ago, It's all in the preparation and attention to detail. AS the first real paint job I did, my arms hurt for 2 weeks from sanding, Priming, sanding some more and getting at all those cracks and hidden places that you think people can't see and some how you always find one. And try harder to not miss any the next time. Now I want to do a full body paint from inside out, so you never would know it was repainted. Which means a full strip down glass, panels, door jam nuts and tabs everything...

@@RalphSampson... I have done many pearl and metal flake jobs. 1st mistake is people tend to put WAY TOO MUCH material on. Second mistake is walking the car. He's not consistent in the movements and that causes streaks and hazing. 3rd mistake is triggering at edges. Now I only watched the video because I thought I knew the car and the one I know somebody threw in black metal flake that looks retarded like polymer floor paint they use in offices over cement. That man is embarrassing himself.
@RalphSampson...
@RalphSampson... 4 года назад
@@maxwebster7572 I have an old truck and thought I MAY learn to paint it myself someday. I know, "LOL", right? I'm sure I won't do it but, I may do the majority of the body work. IDK. Anyway, 1) you say "too much material". Why is that an issue? Runs? Or too heavy and it cracks? Shrinks and cracks? 2) "walking...steaks". I get that but, was he guilty of it? I painted my daughter's bicycle with a "candy" rattle can. I experienced the dark streaks if not consistent with overlaps. I know it was not a car but, it still taught me a few things about overlap. 3) "triggering at the edges". I have always heard you are to overrun the edges then, let off and trigger again before you go back across, thereby, keeping a steady spray from beginning to end. I assume this guy must have been guilty of these things but, I couldn't tell. He was too fast for my beginner's eyes. Lastly, do you think the work ultimatly looked bad? Too bad we never saw it in the sun.
@maxwebster7572

@@RalphSampson... 1, Body filler is made with talc, polyester, fiberglass. It shrinks 10% when the voc's off gas. Never sand Bondo the same day it is applied. Sure, rough out when soft and then come back. If you file a spot that is 1/8" vs 1/4" and they both shrink 10% that is 0.0125" vs 0.0250". Paint is full of what? VOC solvent. It shrinks 10%. The more material you put on, the more solvent you bury and the more it expands and contracts. This causes sand scratch swelling, blistering, deeper stone chips etc. Shops used to use a magnet gauge to determine paint depth so they could sell a strip job. As far as spray Bondo, the industry standard for the last 25 years has been to epoxy the metal (higher tensile bond strength than polyester filler) then do body work and finish in at least 240 grit if not 320 or finer and then epoxy, water sand and use high solids primer. The reason for the second application of epoxy is to SEAL the filler (from solvent going in) AND to stop bleaching of the hardener MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone PEROXIDE). I finish epoxy with 400 grit wet. No point in putting high solids over sand scratches. Spray Bondo was originally developed by Bondo for MARINE application and we call it cement. I have never used it in my career. If you need that much material to feather out bodywork then you have a problem with the person applying it and should be able to FEEL IT with your hand. Another huge problem is baking paint. I will add a very good trick I use is a perfectly straight aluminum sheet 1/8" thick and drag it down a door or quarter and around 220-320 grit filler it will polish the highs / lows and reveal what you have that a guide coat won't similar to a machinist checking a deck with a feeler gauge. Walking the car. Yeah right. Try that when spraying a full size van or truck roof. Or am I to understand truckers don't spend HUGE money on their rigs? Talk to people who paint helicopters and airplane wings and cigar boats for jobs in the MILLIONS. When spraying metallics overlap, distance and speed is CRITICAL as well as gun angle and depending on the gun / material a 45 degree drop coat to align metallic. Some painters especially with DuPont used to put 3 streaks down each side of a hood and the sides of cars like this. Most people wouldn't see that but If it was pointed out it is obvious. Nothing wrong with a rattle can if you are improving your skills however it is usually low hide paint and no technique will make any difference with poor material. There is automotive paint shops load into aerosols for touch ups and it is decent for a car lot quickee. 3, You are correct about overrun however triggering at a door or fender edge causes a buildup on the seam, sometimes a heavy spot (mottling) or sag. If you have a 59 Caddy let's say, paint 3/4 of the quarter trigger and spray the next 3/4 of the door and you are not supposed to do this but I turn the gun and fan off as I trigger. Your arm has a greater sense of speed and distance control than your feet. Ultimately, the video practices are they way things were done in 1980 when synthetic enamel and acrylic enamels were popular over lacquer primer. If you sent your car to the corner bodyshop and they painted like this for $2k you would have a fair job for the price. I certainly wouldn't brag about it though. Well you are telling all your friends about your "custom" paint job they are laughing at you for getting fucked. Now, if you watch the video and do work like this and take pride in learning and do it yourself then I would applaud ANY result. Lastly, I paint all my cars UPSIDE DOWN (the first time). I don't think House of Colors endorsed this video as an advertisement. While I have been a decent painter for 30 years, I know a few who are so good it is intimidating to be around however I make my money in other industries and do

Jon painted my 1969 Camaro Z28 back in 1973. It started it's life as a blue car but we changed that to candy apple red. I had put a fiberglass hood with an L48 corvette type scoop on it which he had to deal with. He used gold base over the red. Different from this treatment, he painted the stripes in a flat black over the top of the clear (I don't remember why). I remember arguing with him about wanting to take all of the decals off the car and welding up the holes. It was for the best though because the winters in Minnesota with the salt are brutal on holes in metal surfaces even if the car sits in the garage the whole time. The car was fab! It cost me $800 at the time but it was the best $800 I ever spent (I'll bet its quite a bit more expensive now!). My car was the envy of everyone on the west side. I'll post a picture of it if I can find one.

Being about the same age we came from the same school and while i do a few things differently i cant find fault, great methodology and great results! But thats not the point, its the fact he is willing to show you and at great length too. Many craftsmen and shop guys will tell you to go learn it yourself the hard way, go pay your dues, go get your own comeuppance. Jon doesnt, he is willing to pass down his knowledge as any proper craftsman would and thats whats great here. The two hours here, you cant even buy it. We need more of Jon and more people like Jon to get out there and pass it down. Im doing this a long time and still I picked new info in the past two hours. Like the work itself, the vid IS the clear statement that the devil is in the details. Work out the prep details and it will be a slippery water slide all the way to the finish. THANK YOU

Excellent video. In my first year of trade school I had to paint a single VW fender black; my teacher took a ballpeen hammer and put a nice ding in. I had to strip it down the bare metal and work that ding out and paint it black, which likes to reveal all sorts of imperfections. Also had undercoat the wheel well. To fail it would've meant to fail the entire three year apprenticeship. Fun. 95% percent of any decent paint job is prep, and most folks have no such patience. Of course a decent well-lit shop with modern tech and climate control is essential.

Quality video, quality editing, very thorough and well paced, and quality narration. Great job Jon.

This is one of the most intense and detailed paint videos that I have ever seen. Almost as good as going to painting school. This is what it takes to do proffesional classic show car paint jobs. this is why its cost $6000-$10,000 to do a paint job like this. Thank you for your video and sharing

this is something I'll probably never do but man, what an interesting video! NOW, I understand why a great paint job is so expensive. A ton of hard work and expertise goes into it and you guys are also artists.

Because I owned a 76 Camaro back in 76', I watched this video at least 4 times and I'm not even a painter. I do appreciate watching a craftsman at work though. Thanks for sharing this fantastic video.

If you wanna see something gorgeous, look at the gold paint job he did on the Mustang in his book (John Kosmoski, that is.) From pan to roof it looked like it was cast from a child produced by a goldfish and a bar of gold.

Stumbled onto this video and thought I’d watch a couple minutes just out of curiosity. 1 hour 20 minutes later I stayed to see the final result. I now have a much better appreciation for the labor and technical expertise that goes into a superior paint job. Well done, Jon!

My words cannot express the PERFECTION you have achieved. You surely are a MichealAngelo of the custom paint works. It's too bad it's a dying breed. Most auto car painters are just interested in the money & doing insurance work. I would not be able to afford a new paint job & would not want one as I would be so nervous I wouldn't want anyone to even touch my car OR leave it alone in a parking lot. GREAT WORK!!!!!! GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!! Thank You. Sincerely.

Worked in a few paint shops as a young man. Always hated it. I watched this entire video and it brought back all those old memory's. I still hate it. I found something else to do for work that I loved in life just like Jon loves doing this. I think that this is the best video that I have ever watched on RU-vid Jon. Your work and product are the best I have seen. The way you did the video and showed every step as well as commented as you went along kept an hour and twenty minute video watchable even for someone who hates painting. Thank you.

When I was in high school, my brother had a '77 Camaro that became mine when he got a '79 Trans Am. Watching the painting of that car brought back a lot of memories of my short time with that car. And the end result was stunning. Thank you for sharing.

Awesome video. It doesn't matter what you are working on. For the best results, always spend the majority of your time on prep work. When you think you're ready for the final finish (e.g. Car, furniture, house, etc), prep one more time. Not fun, but the final is the fun part. It's the fruits of your labor.

I have owned and driven one beautiful car. The lack of respect that cars get in parking lots and on roads is awful. I drive a 20-year-old truck now; if someone hits it in a parking lot I probably will not even notice! I do love to look at a beautiful paint job tho. That car is GORGEOUS AF! It is truly rare to see such a paint job. Maybe when I get older and richer?

Over the years i found when i strip cars i skim over the finish with 7in grinder with 24 or 36 grit. It opens up the finish for the stripper to work more efficiently. You can also find area or repair with filler etc. then just cover that area of repair with tape with tape. That trick i picked up in the 90's when Ford had so many trucks with paint peeling. I worked in the dealership body shop. Not many knew but for covered the complete strip and refinish. We machine sanded the bad spots with 80 grit, then the complete truck with 180 grit. We hit them with a coat of PPG epoxy then one of two different 2 part primer surfacer. Great content thanks for the memories.
