I watched this combat twice now and I need to point out your line of sight calls. Line of sight up a stair well should give vision to the top of the landing area and possably some ceiling area of the next room. With the fox demon down in the lower circle area, there should be no way to target him untill the pcs are at the top of the stair well or possibly even up to the edge of the hightest circle if the fox was couching low to the west wall. I think this caused what would of been a interesting combat to be over faster than it took to set it up.

That's a good point. I had neither considered nor defined the slope of the stairs. In the moment, I probably thought they were shallow sweeping stairs, but if not, then there could be some line of sight blocking effect. There are two problems that I see with taking staircase line of sight into consideration in this case. The first is the case where there are trivial ways of getting around this problem. I think they exist in this case, I understand that a reasonable person would disagree. I don't think there is a point in asking players to recite trivial tactics every time. The second is the question of where to start the encounter. I would expect that if the stairs blocked line of sight, it would have taken the players a turn to cross that, and nothing substantive would have happened in that turn. If nothing happens, why have that turn? Just start the combat one turn later. I don't think the turns spent setting up positioning are worth the time. I think once the players start to apply damage, the combat is going to take the same amount of time. Padding it with movement at the start seems like a waste, especially here where the quick rate that the foe died saved us from several rounds of "Enemy fights Air Elemental" on loop.

Mystical Monk from Tyranny of Dragons - lv 7, 58 HP, +1 Short Sword, Winged Boots, Amulent of Health and Bracers of Defense. "Alright, fellas! Classic case of Spank n Tank. Let's go" Action - Haste Move - Fly 60 Hasted Action - Throw a dagger 23 to hit 6 Piercing My turn is done. Arcanaloth throws a lightning bolt at Vera, advantage to Dex save via Haste - I rolled a 18. Half of 54 damage. I also cast Absorb elements so let's half that again to 13 and then, rolls 2d8 for Bastion of Law (Clockwork Sorcerer) - that's a 14. I take no damage. Now it's my turn! Move - 30 feet Action - Booming Blade 17 to hit for 7 Piercing + 6 thunder = 13 HP damage and another 9 thunder if it moves. Hasted Action - Short Sword - rolled a 21 to hit, take 6 damage Bonus Action - Unarmed Strike, 25 to hit, take another 6 damage. In Tyranny of Dragons, our party at level 7 have already killed a Black dragon, a white dragon, a Red Wizard and a Rehmoraz. We also fought Rezmir in her castle along with like 20 bodyguard lizardmen and frog people. My Mystical Monk ran right up to Rezmir and punched her in the face. Vera was surrounded by 6 of the bodyguards and fighting Rezmir by herself. All the attacks missed me and I started wailing on Rezmir to take her down but by the 2nd round my party members were going down - even the Barbarian Bear Toem went down. The only character that didn't go down was Vera and she saved the party running around using healing potions we snagged off the caravan. My Mystical Monk is a cockroach, she is hard to kill and has several ways of mitigating/absorbing damage. Not my most powerful character but she is the most fun.😅

Single target fights usually are, they need support to distract/punish the party for focusing.

Sweet Baby Ray's I actually did it! I found this channel when it first uploaded the chain devil episode; scrolled all the way to the bottom and watched my way up. Great channel thanks for the content and I hope you all keep it up! ( Level 20 is gonna be something! lol!) Might I add maybe it'd be cool to see unedited footage of an encounter or perhaps maybe even you guys uploading a Full campaign series playthrough? either way keep up the good work

I'm glad you are enjoying it, and that you were able to stomach my earlier videos while I learned how to edit. I'm looking forward to the accomplishment of level 20 and new ideas with new characters. As a consumer of actual play games, I really dislike the slow pacing that you get in unedited footage and live games. That's why these are so heavily edited. What do you like about unedited footage that we are not delivering here? As for a full series play through, I could mash together just the encounter section, leaving out the intros and outtros once we have the full campaign done. I'm not sure I get the appeal of a 20 hour video, but I can't think of any reason it wouldn't be technically possible.

@@d20tactics I guess I was interested in hearing " downtime talk" that wasn't " strategy talk " but when you say it like that yea I think I'm good with the for presentation you have going on lol

@@dontoro1756 The closest thing we have to "downtime talk" is at the end of the Full Dungeon videos. The rest of stuff that we do is administrative and scheduling (what items are you buying, what spells are you prepping, and what times work for everyone). We don't record that, and you're right, not that interesting.

Every time I hear low level noob players/DMs complain about how high level combat is "too slow", I just show them videos like yours where you can get through a round of combat in about 5 minutes or less. Why? Because you guys know your sheets/skills/powers/abilities and instead of playing on your phones, you guys actively plan your moves ahead of your turns. Right now I have my Mystical Monk in a level 18 Dungeon of the Mad Mage and we are all experienced. We get through our turns in about a minute and are able to run several encounters per session as well as explore and RP. Sorry, peeps. 5E combat isn't slow, it just has slow players who need to....for a lack of better terms...."git good!" Take some pride in thr game you play and learn your abilities! 😅

These videos are pretty heavily edited. The ratio of footage to video is about about 3 to 1, so this combat took about 30 minutes to resolve. You're correct about the ways to speed things up: plan your turn ahead of time, count out your movement and ranges ahead of time, read your spells and abilities between your turns, and don't interrupt other people while they are taking their turn. We don't do it here, but pre-rolling your attack and damage dice before your turn also speeds things up a lot, and takes the pressure off people who get performance anxiety when doing math in public. This requires that you play honestly, but you should be doing that anyway.

Please please please make a fight with a Roc bird from Strahd and with Strahd itself. 😀

Roc is definitely on the menu. Right now we are only going through the Monster Manual monsters. We're not using anything from outside of that. We've talked about doing specific modules or settings, but nothing's been recorded yet.
