Deciding on fitting a winch to the L322. Here are the products being considered and my thoughts on how this, might, come together.

The biggest issue is fitting the winch tray, as you know, we have had that bumper cover off a few times and they are different 06-09 models to 10-12. My crash structure is different, and I also have to relocate PDC’s, camera and the cruise control module, and you know what issues that caused when we were in there before. 👍🏻. So, at present, I don’t think it’s a go

No winch for my L322 on 18" rims and 275 65r18 AT tires. The vehicle is going everywhere, it is unbelievable what they are capable of!
@Overlanding4WD
@Overlanding4WD Год назад
The 18’s will make a big difference for sure. Might go that route first, then decide

A winch is something you seldom use but are very glad to have when you need it. Most common use around here (BC) are mud holes. Could be useful if your engine dies when fording. I am in the process of adding a factory winch tray to my P38. This has two arms that bolt onto the outside of the frame rails and come forward through slots in the grill. The tray bolts between the 2 arms so the tray is above the bumper. As for 20 inch wheels, I was in an LR parts department a while ago and they had on display a set of 20 inch offroad tires that were massive. Plenty off sidewall as I recall. I should have jotted down the specs.

18”s will be the first step, I think they will really help, not that I have issues now, but will offer more flexibility.

Judging by the tenor of the video I think the decision has already been made so I'm not sure of the reason for the viewers' poll :-) I have come out firmly against fitting a winch to my Defender and have given my reasons in a video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yfSymYvelhY.html It's a personal thing but absolutely not for me and BTW I don't find it at all restricting. I still get to incredibly interesting places and can't remember when I last had to ask for help getting unbogged. On the very rare occasions this happens it's an opportunity to meet the locals who are helping me out.

Not made the decision yet, probably 18” wheels and tyres will be next, then decide if I go down that route or not

I thinks a winch needs a steel bumper. Hopefully more companies will design and release winch-ready aftermarket steel bumpers (that look good). I’m in the states and considered the Lucky8 L322 steel bumper but it looks a bit generic.
@Overlanding4WD
@Overlanding4WD Год назад
The LRP replaced the steel crash structure behind the plastic bumper cover. The other issue is the space behind the bumper cover to fit a winch mount, flush mounting is not easy because of the coolers and rads on the front.

As we have the later model are we able to push the winch more back as we dont have the big fan? Need to pull the trigger at some point as I need one we always travel alone and got a 1,6 ton offroad trailer behind it whaha

@Overlanding4WD
@Overlanding4WD 8 месяцев назад
@rickfranke4886 yes. But make sure it fits, a lot of this stuff was built for 06-09 models and there are a lot of changes to the front crash structures behind the bumper cover.

On all my vehicles the plan is a receiver hitch system for both the front and rear of the vehicle and use a portable winch. For my L322 and lighter vehicles the winch of choice is the Comeup DV-6s with synthetic line. Total weight of the winch with line is 20 kg's and gives you a 6000 lb single line pull but I always carry a snatch block if more power is needed. The reality is 99% of the winch self recoveries require the vehicle to move less than 3 meters to free itself...but many times you need to go backwards and not forwards. My L322 is my daily, so when not off road I'll just leave the winch in the garage. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Please post up the Toyota fan boy comments, I need a good laugh.
@Overlanding4WD
@Overlanding4WD Год назад
Thought of that option, but, lugging it around is the issue, space too. Good idea though. Oh I will, I delete and block the offensive comments, in fact, I have filters now to remove the comments before they go public. Love winding them up 👍🏻

@RaptorFlyer3D Год назад
I too am thinking receiver hitch to be less intrusive on the front. In terms of carrying it, could you not opt to carry it on the back hitch, that way it’s nicely out the way and with the split tailgate design, it won’t hinder access too much?
@georgecarousos6735
@georgecarousos6735 Год назад
@@RaptorFlyer3D I've designed my system to go three ways....stored inside the vehicle, travel while in the rear receiver and my favorite, installed in the front with a swing up option that gives full factory approach angle when needed. When traveling at road speeds it can be in its "working" position to insure air flow to the radiator intake is unblocked. At off road speeds, blocking the radiator will not matter since the electric fans keep the engine cool. Portable winches don't look sexy and sleek, but hard mounts are near useless if not on the correct end of the vehicle. This is even more important when traveling solo. If in a group, then you have more options for recovery and hard mounts are not as limiting.
@RaptorFlyer3D

@@georgecarousos6735 that sounds like a great solution👍🏻 I’d like to see how that looks if possible please? Really keen to understand your front install. My old Bedford Truck has a 4t mid- chassis drum winch with fair leads front & rear which seems really logical, sadly not suited to our fatty’s.

Question …….. if you have several good long / short ropes how many times would you actually use the winch ?

As I said, it’s an insurance policy. Not decided on it yet, 18” wheels and tyres will come first.

It looks like it weighs “a lot” ……. For me if the vehicle was to be used more off-road than on road then its a possibly. But you appear to be going all over Europe on motorways then doing some over landing. Which is what I want to do. I’m not saying it might come in useful it just appears a bit overkill for the current application …. Id sleep on it.

No choice, only several places accessible to off road adventure without endless motorway driving to get there, unfortunately. Northern Spain being the exception.

I’m sure you’ve considered, but I was under the impression putting accessories on the front of the later L322s such as brush/grill guards and winches were not possible due to things like parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. Any concerns there for you? If not, then I’m all for adding the winch!
@Overlanding4WD
@Overlanding4WD Год назад
If you look closely, there are holes for the PDC, Max thinks of everything in his products. I can relocate the adaptive cruise control module, I’ve had it apart before, the only thing I need to relocate are the two cameras on the lower part of the spoiler, but I can drill some holes in the tray and add them, in fact, they may not need moving. Don’t use the camera system anyway, but who knows what it’s connected to it if they are disconnected, probably the alarm system 🤣 🤷🏼‍♂️

yes, and zero reason to think that the air suspension can’t handle it. It will be synthetic rope, not steel cable, so, decent weight savings on a standard set-up. TBH, shouldn’t be a concern. D4’s, same set-up, handle them OK.
