Niiiice! I love that 1st generation P-bass with the single coil pickup. To my ears, flatwounds + single coil pickups = awesome tone. Seriously punchy, solid bottom end, but with a nice, crisp "chirp" that cuts through the mix. No mud, no brass, just a lovely tone that never gets old.

Great vid again Tim, I love how you take the time to demonstrate these strings, basses, and techniques to those who are curious, thanks to your vid I went ahead and ordered a used Rickenbacker 4003ac I had been eyeing, sold my other rick to help fund it. But I think it'll be worth it. -Jason

Awesome. I bought mine used as well for a fraction of the new list price. Let me know when you get yours and how you like it! These videos are a new thing for me. Was a useful way to let interested buyers know how an instrument sounds, but as I enjoyed making them I posted the one on the La Bella strings in response to someone asking about them on Facebook; Had to get over seeing myself on video and having my playing laid bare for all to see though!

hi Tim! First of all those P basses are bassist's wet dream :) how would you compare tension/perceived stiffness of gold flats? You mention these are little stiff compared to light gauge labellas. Wondering if these would still stiffer than same-gauge Deep Talking flats? (45-105)
@timsarter5622
@timsarter5622 3 года назад
Hi, While I don't have a set of 45-105 La Bella's to compare them to, I think they are probably a bit stiffer than them as well. The golds are an interesting string. Glad you like the P-basses! - Tim

Hello from Norway. I'm an old man that started learning the bass a couple of months ago. People on the net say it's best to change the strings after about 10 weeks if much played on. My bass has roundwound strings, the same i put on when i bought it. They feel and sound like new, but i only practice 5-10 hours a week. What about flatwound strings, do they wear out as fast as roundwound ? I can see the flatwound has a much higher price than the Fender 40-95 roundw i now use. So i am thinking it will be expencive to use flatwound if they must be changed often. How often are you changing your strings. I think your nr two p bass sounded very nice. Thank you for your video.👍
@timsarter5622
@timsarter5622 Год назад
I rarely change my flats. I use Labella Deep Talking flats on almost all of my basses. I have had the same set on one of my. Asses going on ten years now. They sound very different than Ron Brown’s but I like the sound of them. If you like the sound around rounds, that’s fine too but I don’t think you need to change them every 10 weeks sounds to me like the ones you have on it right now still have plenty of life in them if they feel and sound like new.
@Kevin-mx1vi
@Kevin-mx1vi Год назад
You DO NOT need to change strings. New ones always sound bright, but they settle in fairly quickly and can then last for a VERY long time ! I've heard of pro bassists that are using strings that are decades old, and I still have the original flat wound strings that came with my 1964 Watkins, though they sound a bit "dead" now so were replaced with a new flat wound D'addario set.

I've read that LaBella discourages using the Gold Flats on any bass that is strung through the body, was that an issue?

Very helpful video. Quick question. What string length do you used for these basses? I was considering picking up some Deep Talkin' Flats, but I heard the string-through original P basses needed longer strings to work.
@timsarter5622
@timsarter5622 Год назад
Labella actually makes a string through version of their strings. On my string through fenders I find the regular standard set works just fine though.
@dbwinn

I thought the Labellas couldn't be strung thru the body. I've had one break on me at the bend before.

Interesting enough I now have that set of strings on a 2009 Fender Road Worn Series Jazz bass and they don't feel stiff at all. They sound perfect on this bass, while I didn't love them on the '51.

I heard fender flats don’t have quite as much tention as labella’s have have you tried the fender flats?
@timsarter5622
@timsarter5622 Год назад
I have. They were all right but I like the feel and sound of the Labella’s much more. The fenders did not seem to have less tension than the deep talking’ flsts either. If you’re worried about the tension try the .39-.96 gauge (760fx - my favorite all time string or their low tension flats (also excellent)
