This is a labyrinth seal for a Kawasaki H2 750 crankshaft . They are installed in the two center locations of the crankshaft.

What am I missing? All I could get was how to fit a specific seal and not how they actually work?

I’m sorry. You are correct. I should have mentioned how the air has to go past the “speed bumps” to get from one side to the other. By the time it reaches the other side, it is being pressed upon from pressure coming in the other direction. The air just kind of bounces back and forth within the seal while running.
