Lactation cookies! Do they work? What's in them? We'll answer these questions and more in today's video! In this description you will find a list of Galactagogues, and a couple of my favorite make-at-home lactation cookie recipes. I considered adding a few links to pre-packaged lactation cookies, but I have yet to find any that I feel comfortable recommending to anyone. However, I also won't tell you not to try them if you would like to. I hope that this helps to clarify the purpose of galactagogues - they might help your supply slightly, but you still need to be focusing on what actually makes milk!
You got this, Mommy!
GALACTAGOGUES:
The American Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine states that there is little evidence that galactagogues can increase milk supply. The newest data suggests that we should exercise extreme caution in recommending a galactagogue. Many of them have significant side effects.
- Fenugreek: May lower milk supply for some mothers, may decrease absorption of medications, potentially affect asthma, may lower blood pressure, cause upset stomach for mom or baby
- Fennel Seed: Do not use while pregnant - essential oils may be toxic if used in large amounts.
- Blessed Thistle: May trigger allergic reaction, may cause gastric irritation.
- Alfalfa Leaves: Do not use if you have lupus or are using a blood thinner.
- Blackseed: May cause upset stomach.
- Goats Rue: May lower blood sugar, cause blood thinning.
- Vitex: May cause nausea, rash or hives, menstrual disorder and may interfere with birth control or other hormone-based medications.
- Stinging Nettle: May cause upset stomach.
- Shatavari: May cause diarrhea.
- Marshmallow root: May cause allergic reaction.
- Red Clover Blossom: Avoid using when taking a blood thinner or birth control pills.
- Red Raspberry Leaf: May cause contractions if used during pregnancy.
LACTATION COOKIE RECIPES:
Keep in mind, we cannot guarantee that the nutrition information listed on these sites are accurate. Also, LACTATION COOKIES ARE NOT WHAT MAKES MILK They have ingredients that can encourage your body to make prolactin, but the Three Keys ( • Video ) MUST be done to make breastmilk!

I got sick with neasea for a couple days and barely ate anything. As a result: my supply has tanked 😩 I am trying to get it back up as I had so much before I got sick.

I’m sorry that you weren’t feeling well. When we’re not feeling well, we usually don’t nurse or pump as much as usual. If you can get back to pumping or nursing, you’ll see an increase in supply in 3 to 5 days. If you feed baby from the breast, the very best thing would be to let baby be on the breast as long as often as possible. If you need to supplement, feed baby from both breast, then the supplement bottle then latch baby again to both breast. Letting baby use you as a human pacifier is the very best way to increase supply. If baby doesn’t latch at the breast and you are a pumper, Start pumping on a regular schedule and lots and lots of breast massage before pumping. Do you feed baby from the breast? How old is baby? How do you know your supply is low?

@@marycahillclc thanks for the response! I do feed him from the breast. He just turned 2 months old. Previously, my let down reflex had so much that it would cause baby to choke and not be able to keep up with the milk. The other side that he was not feeding on would leak. My breasts also felt full when it was time for him to nurse. Every 3 hours. Now, my letdown is the only time he is able to get milk out while latched and I do not leak from the other side. Further, my breasts don't feel full or firm at all like they did before. I'm afraid he is not getting enough because he used to poop all day long but now he only does a couple times a week. But he is still having several wet diapers a day.

@@BenRebekah what you’re going through is very normal. This is the way it’s supposed to be. As time goes on, your letdown. should be less forceful. Leaking usually stops. Your breasts should start to feel totally flat and empty, like they did before you were even pregnant. Milk is made while you are nursing or pumping. That full feeling that you had before was engorgement. It’s actually a good thing when that engorgement goes away. Tell me more about him only getting milk with a letdown. Is he having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours?

How often for “moving milk often” with a newborn?
@marycahillclc
@marycahillclc 5 месяцев назад
Newborns should eating 8 to 12 times every 24 hours. Some newborns nurse even more than 12 times a day. Thats ok if baby is having enough wet and poopy diapers. Older babies (after 3 months old) might just barely eat 8 times a day as long as they’re having lots of wet diapers (6 or more every 24 hours). If you are exclusively pumping, you’ll want to be pumping to get at least 24 ounces every day. How old is baby? Are you feeding from the breast, pumping or both?

Do lactation pills work the same as the cookies? What about brewer's yeast? Does it actually help increase supply? I have twins and they feed every hour or less, but the constant stimulation doesn't seem to help increase my supply
@marycahillclc
@marycahillclc 20 дней назад
Over the counter lactation pills are not clinically shown to be effective. Same with lactation cookies, they just don’t work. When moms eat them or take supplements or teas, it’s more of a placebo effect. When moms take these, they nurse or pump more to see if they are working but the pumping is what’s working. Moms that don’t add more nursing or pumping, and just wait for them to work, will further loose supply. The moms who say that their supply increased, have a forceful letdown/over supply. Brewers yeast can slightly increase how soon your letdown starts at feedings or pumping but it doesn’t actually affect supply. Tell me more about your situation. How old are babies? Are you feeding directly from the breast? Are they receiving formula also? How many wet diapers do they have every 24 hours? When you pump, how much milk do you get at each pumping session and how much every 24 hours? if so, is this pumping after in between nursing sessions or is it in place of a nursing session?

@@marycahillclc they're six weeks. They're exclusively breastfed. I'd say they each give me at least 8-10 dirty diapers a day. I'm not disciplined enough to pump after each feeding, as they already eat too often for me to have enough time -or energy- to pump after every feeding. When I pump, it's when they're sleeping longer than an hour and a half and I feel my breast too full to wait for them to wake up, so I'd say that if I manage to pump about 5 times in a day, I can get about 4-6oz each pumping session
@marycahillclc
@marycahillclc 20 дней назад
@@Betssie That sounds like your supply is excellent! 😍. They are having great diaper count, so you know they’re getting enough. There is usually no reason to pump if babies are getting enough. You may need to pump a small amount if you’re feeling uncomfortable (like you’re doing). I think you are doing an amazing job! Breastfeeding twins is obviously double the work and you are rocking it!❤️

@@marycahillclc ok, so at the risk of sounding selfish, what can I do for when I need to run errands without them or go to the gym, etc? Should I supplement with formula for those rare occasions or is there some way I can build a stash for those emergencies?
