This interview contains a confession. Due to the graphic nature the ending was redacted by the Police Dept.
In January 2011, Lacy Aaron Schmidt fatally murdered his friend and former girlfriend, Alana Calahan, at her residence.
Lacy Aaron Schmidt was found guilty of felony murder while committing an aggravated assault, malice murder, possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft by taking a handgun in February 2012.
According to the prosecution, Lacy Aaron Schmidt premeditated the shooting and had stolen the firearm from Alana’s father.
They claim he shot the Harlem Middle School girl in the back of the head as she posted images to Facebook and then carried her body to the woods behind the house to hide the crime.
Aaron Schmidt received a life sentence.
Schmidt filed an appeal with the Georgia Supreme Court.
According to the appeal, Judge Michael Annis had failed to inform the jury.
They may have found him guilty of the less serious crime of involuntary manslaughter.
In addition, Lacy Aaron Schmidt claimed that his defense attorney was incompetent and that the penalty he received was an example of “cruel and unusual punishment.”
But the highest court, as stated by the justice who presides over the case, P. Harris Hines, has rejected every one of his reasons.

He shot a girl in the back of her head and killed her, now these idiots are crying out that was cruel and unusual punishment for him to get a life sentence he's lucky he's not on death row. So we shot and killed her then hid her body in the woods and played it off like nothing happened when he gets phone guilty and has to go to prison for the rest of his life that's when everyone wants to appeal it and it was cruel and unusual punishment. Lmao, Cruel and unusual punishment would be if he was whipped with a horsewhip in the middle of the street for an hour, and even that I don't think would be cruel and unusual, you don't shoot a woman in the back of her head.

I've never known any of my dogs as being liars...They pout whenever they know they're caught doing something they shouldn't, but none have been habitual liars....) Thank God, he doesn't do it anymore and he's outgrown it, but I couldn't stand to be around him whenever we were growing up cuz he lied so much. For some people it just comes very easy for them. This kid just kept getting nailed at every lie he told. You'd think he'd figure out that this isn't working, and just decide to tell the truth, but......no such luck. He was terrified of going to Youth Corrections....I wonder what happened when he found out he got a life sentence and was going to the "big boy's jail"???? lol

Thank you so much for this one! I love how you cover cases, and show interrogations that no other channel has. I’ve been wanting to see this a long time! I’ve followed this case since they showed his trial on the OG Court TV. I think it might have been on A&E that I saw where there’s a lawyer trying to get him out. They did a interview with him and he has tattoos that look like they’re professionally done. I thought prison was to punish people. Now in most prisons the inmates have iPads. 🙄 If he gets out, more innocent people will be hurt. I have no doubt.

@Hayhayitsmaay

Not iPad, tablets locked down and monitored. Why? Because most states no longer allow paper mail save legal and media (books, magazines their families or whoever Pay for) mail. Because of contraband and the financial burden staffing mail rooms Because of contraband puts on the tax papers. They can read their scanned mail and buy music in some states. But that's with money put on their books by their families. In Texas unless they're truly indigent they even pay for their own Healthcare. And our prisons have no AC. Not nearly as fun as the movies make it out to look 😂
@pjrivera5289
@pjrivera5289 11 месяцев назад
I completely agree. If they don’t have friends or family to send money they don’t get nearly as much as we see on tv. I have a few former students in prison. They have iPads and while they can’t use the phone but on Tuesday and Saturday, they can use messenger anytime to message or call either voice or video. They can send and receive paper mail. They get dish with movie channels. That seems great but they eat crappy food, have a crappy bed, poop in their cell with no privacy, only get to change underwear once a week (no matter how many times they shower), and the shower doesn’t have hot water. We hear about the perks, but there are a lot of aspects that would really suck too.
@reelfishinmomma498
@reelfishinmomma498 10 месяцев назад
I know in FL (at least my county) they don't get iPads! They do get a very small tiny tablet if you wanna call it that! My nephew got into drugs right out of high school and unfortunately made some stupid choices and landed himself in prison for 3 yrs. He was actually able to bring the tablet home when he got out. It was literally maybe 3 by 4 inches, smaller than most phones are now, it was literally extremely little and I could hardly even see the text on the screen! If anyone has issues with their sight they will have a hell of a time reading anything on it! They are not allowed to access online things such as social media or even Google, no messenger or anything like that! They have access to their jail app where they're able to send and recieve emails, can recieve pics, keep track of their jaypay (their money), I believe can purchase books and a few other things on them but only thru credits which they pay for or fam/friends do! When I'd email him I would always send credits to him so he could respond. They are still allowed paper mail here as well, they had a shared TV in their pod, he said there were only a few channels, one being sports. And they're not supposed to get tattoos in jail or prison either but they still do them with homemade tat guns, if they're caught either giving or getting one there are consequences for it because it is against their rules/laws! The rules doesn't mean it's stops many of them from getting them but jail also doesn't stop many of them from still using either! They can get their hands on pretty much anything inside (guards are to blame for that as well) I've been told a lot of times it's actually easier in there than on the streets which is prob why I've always heard that jail/prison doesn't help to rehabilitate anyone when they can do the same things inside that they can do outside!

So I believe what built up to this horrible event was that she had broken up with him due to advice from a youth pastor. Then the family was also rejecting him a little. Putting boundaries on the time he spent there. He had been coming over for years every night even most dinners there and felt kind of like a family member. He is quite strange really and reminds me so much of other teens who commit crimes like this. Regarding parole I can see why he was sentenced for this premeditated murder to life without parole but it’s crazy that we see adults who murder for the same reasons who get 20 year. He would have a much better chance rehabilitating if he was in the right environment then a lot of people I have seen get a chance at parole.

He is a baby born into deceit. Taught how to lie and do aweful shit at a very young age. Well, it’s like this… it goes at least a couple of generations back. The baby (this kid) has been exposed to violence, hatred, stealing, lieing, and getting away with everything because he was taught to never tell. For example, if he wanted another boys bike, and stoled it, when police come to question, his parents say they will beat his ass if he answers any questions. So , lies are a priority. And honestly, the parents will beat his ass, even if he tells the truth.

I can tell you from experience that it is learned behavior or heredity or both because my son would lie about anything, even the smallest things that he didn't even have to lie about. His father did the exact same thing. I always knew when either of them lied, and I was relentless just like those Detectives, showing them that it wasn't the way it went until eventually I'd get the truth out of them. Although I know I didn't get the truth all the time, at some point it just wears you down and you just can't hear anymore lying, but I would start all over again the next day and when they realized it wasn't going away that's when they would tell me probably most of the truth at least. But living with 2 people you love dearly that constantly lie is so very hard, I just lost the love for my husband, for other reasons also but lying was one of the big reasons I divorced him because you have lost all trust in them. Now, my son, I would never stop loving him, but I can tell you I wouldn't believe half of what came out of his mouth. What would hurt me the most was that I would cry telling him he wouldn't even be punished if he just told me the truth, but it became so compulsive that he would keep the lie up. I also believe that once he kept the lie going, he was so worried about losing face if he came off the lie, he just couldn't handle that. I find people that lie for no reason, is one of the hardest people to live with because once you can't trust someone, there is a huge void between you and no matter what they say, you just never know what to believe anymore, it is so heartbreaking when it is people you love with all your heart and it does take a piece of your heart each time you just can't believe them at all anymore, it puts a huge wedge between your relationship! I could understand if they lied because they were abused or punishment not fitting the lie, but that was not the case with my 2 loved ones, and that's what made it hurt all the more. Even though my ex-husband and I are divorced, we have remained very close friends for 23 years since the divorce, and he doesn't lie to me anymore either. Is that strange or what, eh? Lol.

@@Beckaboo3397No, he was brought in for questioning as a witness and they made it clear to him that he wasn’t under arrest and was free to leave. They had zero actual evidence that he was the killer before his statements. They don’t have to mirandize every witness who can theoretically be guilty of committing the crime. Once they decided to read him his rights, everything had changed and he wasn’t going home. They’re under no obligation to read someone their rights based on a hunch they committed the crime and that’s really all they had when they sat down and started questioning him.

They initially believed he was a witness. After a certain point in the interview/interrogation, they realized, he was their shooter. Hence, the Miranda reading. Also Aaron's legal guardian, (sister, in the next room) granted permission for the detectives to speak to him since he's a minor. All of which is not a good position for Aaron. However, Alana Calahan will never grow up and live life. So, he can stay exactly where he's at. It wasn't an accident. He wanted her as a GF. She only wanted to be friends.

It doesn't matter if he was just being detained or questioned as a witness. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to be behind bars but if he would have made the admission while being questioned without his Miranda, it could have been thrown out as inadmissible.

Your description is inaccurate. This interview contains ZILLIONS of confessions. However, I love this channel and those detectives (with the patience of Saints) did a masterful job with Lacy. They were polite and even tempered the entire time, even when admittedly becoming agitated. No threats, profanity, intimidation, force, nothing. It's not like they were dealing with an agressve defiant individual, but I love the way the work off of each other. If it wasn't for their temperment, I doubt I would've been able to complete the entire 2 hours. R.I.P. Alana.

She was talking to a boy on FB. Aaron wanted Alana Calahan to be his GF. She only looked at him as a friend. At 2:02:13 - he says she was spinning when she got a message , "every time she got a message". The FB messages was from a boy she was interested in. He was behind her reading them. She was happy. He murdered her in cold blood. All the newspapers reported his 1st lie, which was Alana was uploading FB pictures to her account. Not true.

I agree. They had dated shortly when a youth pastor advised her not to be in a relationship. He felt rejected. Also the family recently put more boundaries on their time and when he could come over. He had been going over there nightly for years. Ate dinner there almost every night etc. they says he planned this for weeks and I’m sure the breakup sparked it. Then he was jealous of her talking to other guys. He sounds like other young men who have killed for the same reasons. His demeanor I mean.

If they thought he was the shooter they should’ve read him his rights from the beginning. Everything he confessed to before they read his rights could’ve been thrown out. The waiver they had him sign also said that his parent gave permission for him to talk which might imply to him that it’s ok to talk instead of getting a lawyer even after they read his rights. Whether it was an accident or he did it on purpose it seems like an odd risk for the detectives to get the confession before reading him his rights.

It is sneaky but not illegal for them to do that. It is dumb for any parent to not insist they are on the room. Then get a lawyer as soon as the questions really start coming. Has anyone noticed the fact that this kid wasn’t even read his Miranda Rights until after they finally get him to confess to the crime, they take him to the bathroom, then come back into the interrogation room, that’s when the detective explains to him about his “Miranda Rights” never telling him that he had the right to an attorney or that he was free to leave at any moment, I may have missed something, but the video starts from what I suppose is the beginning of the interview with this kid, he was told that his guardian or whoever” was sitting outside and apparently was fine with him being questioned without representation, he is clearly under the age of 18, even though he did eventually admit to his involvement with the crime, after he gave several different scenarios as to what went on that day.

There's so many comments here about how long it took to read him his miranda rights, and how come it was admissable in court. Initially he was being interviewed as a voluntary witness with his parents permission. He was not under arrest, not detained, and was free to leave at any point. Under those circumstances there is no need to read miranda rights. As soon as the situation changed, and the officers realise his story is making him a valid suspect as opposed to a witness, that's the point when miranda rights need to be implemented. Which they did, so accordingly all the evidence gained from the whole interaction is admissable in court

Aaron broke into the Callahans' home on more than one occasion, which incidentally, is how he obtained the gun; he took their personal items as well. I always found that part really creepy. The Callahans live in a remote, heavily wooded area, so it was easy for Aaron to creep in and out. Why would he become so close with the Callahans? I don't think Aaron and Alana ever dated, as it was never mentioned. Some comments claim they dated briefly, but Alana ended the relationship following the advice of her pastor, which doesn't make much sense. Did Aaron have feelings for Alana besides friendship? If so, I get the vibe Alana wasn't interested; actually, I suspect she was embarrassed to be associated with the likes of such a seemingly strange character almost from the get-go. I get the sense Aaron was able to weadle his way into her mother's heart. Why was Aaron so involved with the Callahans, and why did he murder Alana? I don't buy into the whole "he had a horrible childhood and the Callahans made him feel accepted" bologna either. Was there something more sinister beneath the surface?
