Amazing story! Queen Elizabeth was quite cruel to people in her service. She did not hesitate to try to destroy them if they did something she did approve of, not to mention she had a nasty temper.
I've been fascinated with "Gloriana" since I was little. Yet, the older I get, the less "glorious" she becomes. Times were different but this woman had unbelievable PR. History is written by the victors.
@@Ashley-vs8nu the older we get the wiser we get. She was a user of people and tried to destroy anyone who didn’t do exactly what she wanted. I believe she was jealous of women who found love and got married. But she could have married Robert Dudley but chose not to. She was afraid of losing her power.
@@trishphillips-johnson2500 - I completely agree about Elizabeth I. I think she was cruel, bad tempered, jealous, petty, and not a great Queen at all. A lot like both Henry VIII and Anne Boylen
The Grey Sisters were victims of circumstance and of their parents ambitions. You can't help feeling sad for them but Mary Grey survived the harshness of her situation. Even though Elizabeth I detested the Greys because they are a threat to her she did find a degree of respect for Mary for not making any claims to her crown and thought her less a threat than her elder sister Katharine.
Maybe one on Lettice's sister Anne Knollys also? She married Thomas West- Baron De La Warr (my ancestor) & 3 of her sons were the first governors of the colony of Virginia - including her son Thomas who inherited the De La Warr title after his father's death & for whom the US state of Delaware is named.
@@joiedevivre2005 How interesting! I just had an ancestry report done and found out my ancestors were from London! That explains my lifelong fascination with English history.
Wasn't Lettice Knollys the granddaughter of Mary Boleyn? That always adds another layer to the many reasons that I think the jealousy was so thick between her and Elizabeth. The WORST thing she could've done was marry Dudley. She had to know that. So, did she do it out of spite? Or did Lettice truly love him?
Love, lust & the shortness of life. Or should I write LUST, all those rules of flattery of court than a little too serious, strapping lusty men whispering of a life that will not come.
That's why Elizabeth1 was such a great Queen you had to be tough to succeed as a woman in those days, that's shy Henry8 thought it so critical to have a male heir,he didn't want another" war of the Roses that decimated all the noble families of England.
What an adventure her life was. I think her life was just as impressive as those of her sisters. Thank you for telling her story. I have been following your channel for sometime now and I must say that I appreciate how you present historical figures who are not much talked about on RU-vid. Do you have any plans on doing a video about Sophia Magdalena of Denmark, Queen of Sweden? Thank you again.
Elizabeth Tudor was a nasty vicious evil woman who murdered her cousin and rightful Queen, Mary Queen Of Scots and her treatment of the other cousins, the Grey sisters Katherine and Mary Grey. Elizabeth was very much the illegitimate daughter of the harlot Anne Boleyn
@@jewel65 all the more to treat others with kindness. ET was a vicious evil murderous who sent hundreds to their deaths and many were better people than she was. But she will pay for her crime on judgement day
The amount of idiotic comments that go along the lines of blaming the woman who didn’t wish to be married off, against her will, to an old gizzer, really make it very clear how the inhabitants of this troubled world have left their brains in the mud at some point. Never mind their souls, those seem to have never even factored to the equation to begin with. Long corrupted by their shadows those have been. Human stupidity never seizes to amaze.
Its rather surprising that Queen Elizabeth l herself a pawn in the early days, didn't see how the girls had been used as pawns and have more sympathy...Your video doesn't explain how her financial circumstances came to be improved?
That portrait shown as being Frances and her new husband, Adrian Stokes is actually Mary Neville and her son, Gregory Fiennes. See Frances’ figure on her tomb in Westminster Abbey for an actual likeness of her. The portrait shown in this video is still often erroneously identified as her.
I can't confirm or deny what you say. However, on the foot of the print, it does say, 'Frances Duchess of Suffolk and her husband Adrian Stokes Esq' it dates from 1748 by George Virtue. Appreciate the comment, thanks 😊
They all died so young. Jane at 16. Katherine at 24 abd Mary at 33. Jane was executed, Katherine died in the tower of london and Mary died of the plague
Was she a little person? I only ask because of the Phillippa Gregory Book Edit: I should really learn to watch the whole video before commenting lol Bravo on an awesome video my new fave 👏 channel
@History Roadshow Apart from their illustrious cousins, people forget about the last 2 Tudor Princesses (Well, Protestant and eligible for the Crown last Tudor Princesses) Apart from 'The 9 Days Queen' there's not a lot. Thank you for giving shoutouts and doing videos about women who played a quieter role in History's Unsung Heroines.
So basically, Mary Grey's mother was Henry VIII's niece because she was the daughter of his sister, Mary Tudor, and one of her older sisters, Lady Jane Grey, was Henry's great-niece and wife who was executed. Why am I even shocked that Henry wed his own great-niece (Jane)? Its what the rotals gave always done, right up to the late Queen Elizabeth II, whose husband, Prince Phillip, was her cousin, I believe, from her mother's side of the family.
Henry VIII did not marry his great neice Jane Grey. Jane was only around 9 or 10 when Henry died. Jane was married at 16ish to Lord Guildford Dudley who were both executed on the orders of Queen Mary I. Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were related but on her fathers side of the family. They were 3rd cousins in the British Royal Family being both great great grandchildren of Queen Victoria they were also 2nd cousins once removed in the Danish Royal family. Do some research before posting
They really loved capital punishment in 1500s.Never hesitated it was done quickly and brutally. That is the one of the many problems with death by state.
The title Duke of Suffolk has been created 3 times once for De La Pole family, then the Brandon's (Mary Tudors husbands family) and finally the Grey family
Have liked this channel for awhile / and appreciate the calming voice used (I have tinnutus and use videos and podcasts to fall asleep). However, not a fan of the AI graphics - at all, find them creepy and fake.
One can only be grateful we live now when the Tudors are gone. Terrible family that produced one real rose, Elizabeth. As an American, I can honestly say our independence was a great idea. Freedom from all these people is good.
I am a direct descendent of Thomas Keyes and still carry the Keyes name and have the suspension that they may have had a secret kid witch led me to watch this video, it left out alot of Thomas's life bit very good 👍. I must say his offspring our still giants and the reason that Thomas Keyes was executed was quoted to be because the bastard son of a Keyes could not be heir to the throne even though Tom was very respected
