Daemon's laugh is more ironic than inappropriate. He and Laena left Westerios to get away from the politics and the first thing that happens is Vaemond finds a subtle way to make mention of Rhaenyra's illegitimate children rather focus solely on his niece's funeral. Daemon is back in the Game of Thrones and he knows it.
Laenor looking so heartbroken makes me think that Laena was the only one of his family that he outright told about his sexuality (Corlys and Rhaenys probably guessed it but kept quiet) and she was completely understanding and accepting of it, so he's losing the one person he could confide in and be completely honest about himself with without fear of it being used against him.
I think Rhaenys, as his mother, also knows of his sexuality since she mentioned it in episode 5. And in contrast to Corlys, she knows its not his phase. But maybe she just has this motherly instinct so regardless if Laenor told her, she knows.
Yes! And with Laena being older, Laenor may just feel like he lost his big sister who always accepted and protected him. I wish we got to see more of them together in the show.
As someone who has lost his sister, there is nothing extra or super embellished about his reaction, it’s a deep deep pain, it’s like losing a part of your identity, the person who you are, it’s like a pause in life that never hits play again and you can’t rewind it either.
I love your thought but could it be that he’s devastated to lose his only sibling and sister? And not be because of some secret he told her sometime perhaps potentially?
the way they spread on the rocks, the costumes , the soundtrack , the place. ughh hbo certainly knows how to choose and work hard for the their production, no wonder they're the most successful streaming service at the moment.
@@geopoliticsnerd213 I think they’ve probably been the best streaming service for more then like 7-8 years you could even damage since the wire or true detective
I always figured Daemon’s laugh was a way to redirect attention. Vaemond was saying things that were pointed insults towards Rhaenyra and her kids. Rhae and the kids were looking uncomfortable. Daemon’s laugh redirected attention from them to him.
No, he was laughing at the stupid shit he was saying. remember when right before he killed him. He even smiles when he said “say it” and then he said “BASTARDS!!”. Damon knew he was gonna kill him for the stupid shit he said. I don’t know why people think of this interpretation. it’s completely obvious Knowing how Damon is. He confirmed it by saying “say it” before he killed him.
Good. Im glad Vaemond always made a point to throw that out there because those kids are NOT heirs of Driftmark. They were made from disgusting actions. Not their fault. They're good kids. Rhaenyra and Harwin should be ashamed of themselves.
@@brandonwhitehead2856 now don't exaggerate, "disgusting actions" aka having sex with another man since your husband is gay and you have been forced to marry each other? Is really not that deep, he recognised them as his children and that's what matters in the end
Yes, although he also laughed at the way his wife's funeral suddenly turned into a quiet political insult to Rhaenyra and her children Daemon laughed because he realized he was back in Westeros
I hate that he used Laena's funeral to make those awful comments. This was a moment to honor Laena, so her family could say good bye to her. So disrespectful.
@@Emy-fv5ny they had gods and the Targaryens named many of their dragons after them( Balerion, Vhagar, etc) but as far as I know they weren't as devout as other people's were to their religions because they saw themselves as closer to gods than men. But yes Daemon still pays some homage to the Valyrian gods, he is the emboyment of what is left from old Valyria.
upon first watch, I regarded the delivery of Vaemond's speech to be a bit grating on the ears for some reason. He seemed angry more than mournful. However, I realized he perhaps is mourning the loss of his true-born niece. And especially at the sight of the Strong bois, he is especially agitated and indignant. Such a layered and nuanced delivery that I totally didn't catch! At 2:21 which dragon is this? Meleys? Also, this shot at 2:26 is pure fantasy! 5 dragons in a single frame! ☺it's crazy to imagine how dragon will turn upon dragon soon enough! :(
Daemon laughed at his speech because he was being petty and making slights against the Strong boys. Like he picked a good time to be an ass to his nephews during his wife's funeral, little wonder why Daemon killed him.
I wish I could agree with this, but Vaemond never even considered Laena's daughters when he tried to denounce Rhaenyra's children, not even when Rhaena was betrothed to Lucerys, which meant the Velaryon blood and name would flow because of her.
This Funeral was so much more hard-felt since it really signifies the end of the old glory of Valyria. It signifies that maybe the Valyrian’s are simply cursed, with so many of their family dying at child birth. The Greens have taken over part of house Targaryen, Rhaenyra has bastard children; the fate of what could’ve been old Valyria moving forward is truly gone. Daemon chuckles for a number of reasons, I think he did it since he believes he could’ve restored the ideal of old Valyria on his own, but the mature royalty families never accepted him for who he is. He could’ve been King with Rhaenyra and this would’ve restored the house to power. I’d say he hates everyone at the Funeral mostly for impeding this in their own way. It’s poetic, the Valyrian’s know the truth of what’s to come of their curse, “from the sea we came, to the sea we shall return”
UNIVERSE??? Mmmmm. Hodor. Not debatable. Laena is great but she’s around for like .2 seconds and progresses the story in zero ways and lost nothing more than her desires. And her sacrifice is kinda self serving as well.’
This is one of my favourite scenes from the show, everything was just right. The music, how the camera pans across the key players, the look between Daemon and Rhaenyra and that laugh. Perfect.
This scene is SOOOO GOOD and I find myself coming back to it often. The eulogy paired with the musical score was just so gorgeous. This scene and the one where Alicent pleads for just for Aemond are both really high on my list for favorite scenes this season. They’re both just so good and so we’ll acted.
Vaemond wanted Driftmark and that's the reason he was attacking Rhaenyra's sons. Coryls loved those boys as his own grandsons even though he knew they were not his blood. Luce was to inherit Driftmark from Coryls. So, Vaemond publicly attacked the boys as part of his plan to take Driftmark from Luce which was against his brother's wishes. The reason Rhaeny's spoke up against Vaemond's claim-she honored Coryls wishes. In the end it doesn't matter because Viserys recognized Rhaeny's claim and what her husband wanted, which made Vaemond angry. His plan fell a part the moment Viserys came walking down the isle. He got angry and Daemon killed him.
Vaemond stood up for the truth. Lords don't get to pick and choose heirs and desinherit their rightfull heirs without just cause. That is why Randyll Tarly had to threaten Sam into joining the Night's Watch to give up his claim to Hornhill, because Randyll couldn't simply disinherit Sam and pick his younger brother as heir. Driftmark either rightfully belongs to Vaemond or to Laena's children. Corlys only wanted the Strongs as heirs for his legacy to be the oficial grandfather of a king and that the lord of Driftmark be brother to a king. Pretending Vaemond is the vilain here is ridiculous and killing a person for shouting the truth is evil.
@@masterplokoon8803 Vaemond stood up for his own greed and against his brother's wishes. It is Corlys decision who inherits Driftmark, regardless of who it is. And, his wife supported his decision not Vaemond. No one expected Viserys to show up and this ended Vaemond's weak claim and Otto's plan to use Driftmark for military purposes. Vaemond is the bad guy by attempting to steal Driftmark from Luce, then use it to support Otto against Rhaenyra.
@@lisas3545 Did you even bother reading what I wrote? I explained to you it is not the lord's decision on who gets to inherit unless that lord has no lawfull heirs (which Corlys has in his brother and grandaughters). If lords could just pick whatever heirs they wanted Sam would never have been forced to go to the Night's Watch if Randyll could have just named his younger son Dickon as heir. Sam was threatened into joining the Night's Watch so that he would give up his claim to the Tarly lands because Randyll couldn't just pick Dickon as heir. "Steal Driftmark from Luke"- Luke has no claim to Driftmark whatsoever and himself knows he has no business rulling. Vaemond has an actual claim, the only claim that might be stronger than his are Baela and Rhaena's. And literally any Westerosi person in Vaemond's position would do the exact same thing what Corlys is doing is ilegal, powerhungry and a disservice to his actual lawfull heirs (the Velaryons, not the Strongs). Even Daemon himself said that Vaemond only cared about the Velaryon line, not politics. He stood up for the truth and for his house and to not handover Driftmark to a Strong but he is not team Rhaenyra so he is the vilain to many while those who kill people for telling the truth are seen as the heroes aparently. By your logic Ned Stark was the vilain and Cersei is the hero for forcing Joffrey on the throne.
@@lisas3545 it's not a disagreement, I was not giving an opinion, I was mostly mentioning facts that your ignored to make up your own rules. And why answer to comments if you don't even bother to read them? Bye.
I wish they would have added the scene of Daemon and the twins hugging because it would have added more to this scene. Daemon isn't laughing because of what the dude is saying he's laughing from basically going off on him and killing him where he stands but out of respect for Laena he laughed it off
“As she sets to sea for her final voyage, the Lady Laena leaves two true-born daughters on the shore.” Not gonna lie, I teared up a bit when I first read that. Those poor girls.
The show revealed that Daemon was not in love with Laena. After 10 years, Daemon still pined for Rhaenyra. At her funeral Daemon could not take his eyes from her, defended her and her children, and later made love to her. Love is a very difficult emotion for Daemon but he deeply loves Rhaenyra -always has. Nettles is 16 years old or so -a child to Daemon younger than his daughters. I call Nettles and Jace will fall in love.
So they dump their caskets right off the side at the shore? Like right there? Wouldn't it make more sense to take a ship a little ways off shore and do the ceremony? Not a long way but at least not right where people swimming around look down and say "Oh theres old so and so"
I'm sorry...but I don't give a good goddamn what Vaemond was saying about Rhaenyra. Is he lying? I get what Daemon did, but that's not cool. He's at the funeral of HIS wife, and HIS daughters are being consoled solely by their grandmother. House Velaryon should've thrown up the deuces the moment Daemon married Rhaenyra. Two days after Laena's funeral and less than one day after Laenor's death. Those boys get out of jail free bastard cards would be revoked and I would have nothing else to do with them. When war broke out they should've remained neutral. They owed neither side a damned thing.
He’s not laughing because he’s mocking his dead wife. He’s laughing at vaemond using a eulogy at his dead niece’s funeral as a way of attacking Rhae and her children. Daemon and Laena left KL because of all the politics, they wanted no part in it. But the minute she dies, he’s immediately thrusted in the games all over again, and he’s laughing at the irony of it, which is also mixed in with his own grief.
@@KoiYakultGreenTeathere are some Westerosi nobles that learned High Valyrian as well, one of them is none other than Tyrion Lannister. Alicent's kids know how to speak it so she might have learned it too.
Why daemon was laughing Either to *divert attention from Vaemond shit talking Rhaenyra’s children *tell Vaemond that he should probably shut up before he falls too out of line *hint at the absurdity of the fact that Vaemond can’t put aside the game of thrones , even for the sake of (and only during) his niece’s funeral Ngl first time I watched this I didn’t realize Vaemond was talking shit about Rhaenyra’s children
Basically being like “bro we are at a funeral and you’re taking this time to take pot shots at children?” It was both below him as well as made him look dumb, hence daemons laugh, daemon is also very uncomfortable with death amongst his loved ones
Honestly I thought it was extremely rude but I realized that Vaemond was the one who insinuated Rhaenyra subtly in the eulogy. He was defending her honor by stepping in and also shielding her by redirecting the hate to himself.
