When I bought my boat, I wondered if I'd ever see dolphins. The very first time I took her offshore (Santa Barbara Channel) we saw them right away. We debated changing course to approach them but the dolphins decided the issue for us. They came right to us like a pack of playful puppies. We were under sail -- no noisy prop churning the water -- and they came close aboard; ahead and astern. Probably laughing at our lumbering hull, so easy to outrace. Then they were gone. Like Mindy. "I love you, bye-bye!" It is a wonderful thing to have a wild creature enjoy one's company, even for a moment.

This interaction probably wasn't a game. Teaching and practicing hunting techniques is a constant part of their lives. Orcas will continuously hunt and not eat the prey, hunting purely to teach and practice. The flanking formation they were swimming in is identical to when they hunt whales by exhausting the whale in a long chase that lasts hours, and it requires a lot of coordination and tactics which has to be mastered through lots and lots of teaching and practice. And endurance is developed and maintained.

There were divers in the water and they got on the boat to get out. So it could be a kind of get out of my hood. Also different pods have different hunting techniques they learn from their families. Look up the orcas that are now targeting fishing vessels for food. It is really cool to see animals that are communal and teach their offspring about hunting grounds and hunting stratagies.
@KarePassion

the_lusty_goat The point is ... that they tried to treat it like such a mystery and postulate all sorts of ridiculous ideas. As they mentioned, Orcas are in the dolphin family, and like other dolphins they enjoy playing along the bow of the boat. It is also no mystery why the dolphins had to move to the front... Orca trumps smaller dolphins. As far as the learning to hunt part, animal play always has a role in learning adult roles... To treat this like some experts have just stumbled onto solving the mysteries of play is somewhat ridiculous. None of this is new. But people are good at putting themselves at the center of everything.

Tony scarface - There's not a single lethal attack in recorded history of a killer whale killing a human in the wild. Only few cases of whales bumping into boats where no one got seriously injured, one case of a whale grabbing a divers bag filled with fish and no one got even injured, and there's one and only case of a killer whale biting a human and the bite wasn't lethal. Stop talking out of your ass when you obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Whoever made (narratored) this video has zero knowledge on orcas. Orcas are one of the pickiest eaters on the planet, they either eat specific types of fish, seals, whales, or sharks. Orcas on the north-west coast of North America are actually in danger of starvation because they are such picky eaters. Orcas also have brains almost just like ours, with language etc. and even a part that we don’t have that scientists believe is related to empathy. They would not in any way see this as “hunting”, they know that a boat is not something for them to hunt. (I’m a biology major in university and plan to do my thesis on the biological and psychological makeup of orcas, not pulling this out of my ass, I’ve done research for over 2 years on these creatures now, still have many years left to go though so if I’m wrong on anything feel free to correct me). Edit: the zoologist made perfect sense, it was the questioning tone of the narrator that threw me off.

They didn't say the Orcas were hunting. The zoologist said they were playing and this play helps to hone their hunting skills when they hunt as a pack. Did you actually stay around for the whole 3 minutes of the clip? Or has the average American adult attention span fallen below 3 minutes now? It's a BBC production which has the finest natural history unit in the world and is narrated by Chris Packham who has a degree in zoology and is a very well regarded natural history presenter in the UK.
@tvdfanforeva
@tvdfanforeva 6 лет назад
John Bull sorry for my late reply but just a few things: first of all I’m not American so that was a general assumption and second I did watch the whole clip. The zoologist made perfect sense, what was irritating was the narrator. Now I am not british either so maybe that’s where my misinterpretation comes from but it almost sounds as if the narrator is challenging everything the zoologist is saying, which for me made it hard to distinguish what was to be trusted and not trusted from the clip from the point of view of someone with no knowledge on the subject.
@johnbull8377
@johnbull8377 6 лет назад
quirkydobrev I'm still not sure what your point is. All Chris Packham did was lead the piece in to the final conclusion. What were the Orcas doing? Hunting the boat? A little a bit about their behaviour and then the conclusion. No, they weren't hunting the boat, they were learning as a group through play. I haven't got a major in biology but even I can understand that.

+Kaiser Frost : I don't think that's safe to think like this. Or at least to imply that they chase each thing that flee from them, like in the case of a boat. The fact they enjoy chasing sometimes doesn't mean they enjoy chasing boats, since they certainly don't; they just follow them and benefit from their inspiration to move fast without spending much energy, adding the playful aspect. If you've done endurance sports with partners, you'll understand how much it's more motivating to have a focus, than to have no objective or doing it alone.
@courtkendell

Not necessarily true. As mentioned in the video, Orca whales aren't whales. They are members of the Delphinidae (dolphin) family. This behaviour isn't abnormal for this family. It's called wake riding. Dolphins ride at the bow of a boat (bow riding), while Orcas ride in the wake (wake riding) because they are too big to ride by the bow. The wake also generates larger waves for the Orcas to play with. Like Dolphins, they have been known to emit higher pitch frequencies when having "fun" in activities like this. They're just big, adorable Dolphins who are enjoying some nice waves.

The snake got out of there and the guy woke up and saw the snake lying next to him on a straight position. He though it was playful and told the owner that so he got an answer from the owner: The snake was checking if it could swallow you.

Perhaps they were trying to get in front of the sound of the engine. They hunt by sound and the huge engine must have been producing a massive amount of noise at that speed. Only way not to hear it is to get in front of the propagating waves. Especially in water that sound can travel for kms - imagine an air horn continuously being blasted - no fun. (hope it was just training but I have seen research to whale species having to change the frequency of their "voices" to overcome noise like this)

The whales have learnt to do this due to the scummy tactics of tourism boats deploying whale-baiting, so each boat that comes by is automatically seen as 'free food buffet'... which is why other marine life is now also harassing, even boarding boats. They're not training, they're waiting. Whoever started it should be weighted down by a concrete brick and pushed overboard with whales en-tow.

@tyrionlannister9273
@tyrionlannister9273 4 года назад
@@rronmar So you have no evidence to support this claim? Just because they're dolphin's largest relative doesn't mean they wouldn't. They act more like cats with their prey. So, by that reasoning if house cats were the size of a jaguar, panther or tiger, we should assume their carnivorous bloodthirsty nature wouldn't extend to humans as prey, wait those cats will kill us and eat us. Hmmm, evidence to support my case. How about that? So where's yours?
@rronmar
@rronmar 4 года назад
Tyrion Lannister a cat is not a orca, different environments and most importantly different evolutionary conditioning. Evidence that something DIDN’T occur? I don’t have to prove anything, you need to prove that an orca in the wild has ever attacked a human(if it bothers you that much). We have been interacting with orca in the wild for centuries with no recorded attacks that I have ever heard of. I am sure if there were, someone would have spoken up here, so good luck with your research:) considering we interact with them on a DAILY basis, if it has ever happened it would be nearly unmeasurably low odds... Based on evidence your odds are certainly greater that another human would kill AND EAT you before a wild orca did, evidence throughout our history certainly proves that... On the other hand land carnivores throughout our evolution have(and still do) hunt humans. Basically on land, WE are the seals and salmon:) It was not until we developed enough brain power to create tools to push us to the head of the food chain that we ceased to be as easy a meal. We still are, without our tech... Big cats do not eat insects that I am aware of, it would certainly not be typical for them to do so. Our relationship to the orca is probably like that, we just are not on their food radar... I have sailed from the arctic to the antarctic, you need to get out on the water and live/experience a little more of our cool planet...
@tyrionlannister9273
@tyrionlannister9273 4 года назад
@@rronmar When did I mention insects? Second, so you would swim with wild orca whales? It's nice you've been to both poles. Have you shared pictures online of it? And as for showing proof that orca's would eat us, I'd rather be on the side of not in the water with them if I have the choice. Just in case they would.

There are even businesses that offer anyone a swim. They drive you to Orca location, find them and then you dive and swim near them.
