In south MS'sippi, "Killswitch" lanyards are standard equipment on boat motors and have been for over 20 years. We have a Yamaha 90 outboard motor and flatbottom aluminum boat for the river. Our boat motor won't start without it being in place. You can bypass it, but is a foolish thing to do. Also lifejackets are required for anyone under 18, in the boat, and have been for over 20 years. You can operate a boat at any age with an adult present but can take the boat operators test at 15. Unless the law has changed, 15 and older have to take and pass the online test now. Until the last 5 or so years, there was no test or age requirement. The only thing Game Wardens checked for previously, were fishing license, registration, and appropriate number of life jackets in the boat. Now, they will even count the beer in your ice chest and test/tear your life jackets. It wouldn't surprise me if they started putting expiration dates on life jackets. I grew up with a man that ran the river and his trotlines in his dad's boat, by himself, when he was a 7 yr old boy. He fished and hunted with his dad as soon as he could walk and talk. He is around 60 now.

Back in the 80s, they found a body in the Snake River that was lodged on one of the bridge footings. An angler fishing off the bridge snagged on the body and pulled it up! The body was still fully clothed and the flannel shirt on the body was full of crappie jigs and catfish hooks. Kinda creepy all the anglers who snagged on the poor guy and didn't even know.

I once was swimming across a lake cove that didn’t even look like it was that far. My sister and I were swimming and about halfway across my leg started cramping up, probably to much beer and not enough water causing it. So what I did was just roll over and started to float, which I think probably saved my life! So it took a little while but I floated and kicked / paddled when I could making all the way! Few things that I learned from this was, stay hydrated in the sun, that distance across the water is deceiving, and most importantly FLOAT DON’T PANIC AND DROWN!! Hopefully someone can remember this if you happen to be in this predicament! Love your Channel, good job 👍🏻

I was in this EXACT situation in a massive quarry. Impaired, young, stupid. No body fat. Ran out of steam halfway across. It was a miracle I made it. I threw up my guts as soon as I hit land. If that has happened during the swim, I wouldn't be here to type this comment. God was looking for me !

And floating on your back keeps more of your body out of the colder water just below the surface.

ive actually had a leash break while surfing and it was similar, the waves were so often it was hard to swim normally, i just gave up and started floating and treading. suddenly i was close enough to the shore that i could just swim a little and then walk. within like 15 minutes! floating is key it will save your life! i thought i was done for.

Something my Dad always impressed on me was put the life jackets on at night and during the day when your under way. That one thing can save so many people. When you are stopped in daylight, don't trip take them off and be comfortable (unless you're alone) but when it's night or the boat is moving by it's own power or in fast current just put it on. Especially since there are really cool ones these days, back then all we had was those dorky one's, LOL. :)

When you found that dock float so far back and high above the water line it clicked something in my brain. Back before the 80s it was really common to use empty barrels for dock floats. I grew up on a lake and our first dock had them for floats. A lot of the neighbors did too. The dead end street nearby had a few abandoned barrels dumped in it that stayed there for years. So given that barrel man had 70s to 80s clothing it’s possible this might not have been a mafia hit. It could have been a lot more routine and there just happened to be unguarded barrels at the marina. Solving two problems at once. At first glance a barrel did seem to strongly suggest mafia but remembering how common they were back then maybe not. That could explain though why you thought they had an ID that fell through. Might have turned out not to be a missing mobster.
