Hi Bob, This was only my 3rd time fishing LSC, and I also had the same questions. I was surprised how clear it can get. I was told later in the spring/summer the weed growth can be pretty bad. My guess why this relatively shallow body of water produces big fish is because it is very fertile. I know that the big muskies also migrate into the Detroit river. There are a handful of spoonpluggers that fish for them in the river and do real good. John Bales several years ago caught a 56" there. But in the river you are catching most of them in 30/35ft. Back in LSC you would think the main shipping channel would be good, being the deepest water, but when the barges go thru you can see a very murky trail behind them. I'm guessing the prop wash churns up the bottom and causes an unstable condition, why I would not fish the main channel in LSC. I hope to spend some more time on LSC. If your looking for quality and quantity of most all game fish, the Great lakes and waterways seem the best places to go.

I don't recall exactly on that trip, but most of my trips for early season smallies is late March to end of April. Water temps are from upper 30's to upper 40's during that time.

Hi Jim,, funny you ask about boats, I should be uploading a video soon talking about boats. Bottom line it really comes down to your personal preference and where you plan on doing most of your fishing. With that being said, in my opinion you want to go with the narrowest beam (width) possible. If your fishing the great lakes often, and plan on making long runs out, you have to think more about safety. But plain old commonsense plays a big part. I would not go out on great lakes with big waves forecasted. I was caught in Green Bay 6 miles out last year in 4 to 5 foot waves, but took it easy and slowed down and was ok. (but was a bit nerve racking for awhile!) With your two choices, I would go with the 76" beam Alumacraft. If I had to replace my boat today, I was eyeing the Vision 1600 tiller by Crestliner. It's 81" beam, but I like the layout and storage it offers. Not sure what the hull warranties are for all of those, but I would definitely look into that too. Good luck with what you decide on!

Width is the most important. The narrower the better control. Weight really isn't much of a concern, other than towing.

Triumph (plastic boat), 17ft. It's dubbed the worlds toughest boat! And I would agree! They stopped making them a few years ago.

Medium heavy, fast tip rod, I believe a Dobyns FR 705CB, don't recall the reel, 17lb monofilament line. PS.. I don't think the rod/line/reel in the overall picture is that important. What is important is knowing where to cast (structure) and the speed control needed for the fish to strike.
