About a month ago Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho from Clear Mountain Monastery near Seattle, WA visited Birken Monastery. Both of these fine young monks (Ajahns now !) have been dear friends for a long time. I met Ajahn Kovilo probably during his firsts visit to Abhayagiri as a layman, close to 15 years ago.

There is so much regret and with it despair. The first truth is so overwhelming. This conversation was a bit of the map to help me navigate that.

Walter, don’t let the first Noble Truth get you down. Remember that that there are three others. Knowing there is a cause of the dukkha can bring light. Knowing there is a practice is inspiring and that there is an end to dukkha can bring joy.

Mahayana Buddhists paint icons with the same attitude as the Christians you talk about.

Yes they do, I was very impressed when I met Tashi. Actually did a day-long workshop with him and many of the techniques he showed me were similar to the ones Father Damian taught me. Also similar attitudes and beliefs around religious art, which is not surprising actually. Thanks for watching and commenting.

It might just be my love of icons that is coming through. Ajahn Kovilo is excellent with languages and Ajahn Nisabho is a talented writer, so I suspect if the conversation had been on these topics they would have lead.
