Thank you, Ajahn. Metta was an infuriating rote exercise repeating a script. Luang Por Sona's advice of non-ill-will and the cultivation of feeling has helped. Metta is Paññā.

As a newcomer it is so beneficial to have an expert’s take on metta meditation. My personal favourite is the Ajahn Brahm method of just sitting and waiting for a mango to fall into your hand.

I’d not heard that teaching, sounds like a good analogy for patience.

Thank you so much, Ajahn - metta is my practice and I really needed a bit of inspo lately - It's challenging to be here in the world and not in the cocoon of the monastery, where the container is nurturing. I will redouble my efforts, though, thanks to this talk! Much gratitude, Cindy, (the kitchen stewart who was at Birken when you first arrived there in 2019)

"It's an intention of non ill will." Thanks for this lesson. I didn't know that about loving kindness.

Thank you for the talk Ajahn. Didn’t expect use of word “hate” in Bhikku’s vocabulary. Where is his Equanimity? 🙏

Thank you for highlighting your experiences regarding Metta meditation, specifically approaching it as an intention which I found helpful! 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you, Ajahn, for this talk. It's given me motivation to look again at Ajahn Sujato's series of talks on metta which I've tried twice previously and haven't, so far, been able to get through. I cannot seem to reach the development or recognition of the feeling and so don't go any further because, after that, Ajahn Sujato talks about spreading that feeling around the body. Your talking about metta being an intention is really helpful. Would you say that focusing on the development of the feeling could take a temporary back seat to focusing on the intention?

If the development of the feeling is not easy or seems to slow you down, it might be best to just stay with the intention. Occasionally try to see if the “feeling” is stronger and useable. Staying with what is easy might be a good way to develop.

Thank you so much for this talk! Do you still have that collection of resources on metta you mentioned towards the beginning and would you be willing to share it?

Unfortunately I don’t think we kept a record of the material, we just suggested things every evening or brought the material and we slowly worked through it. That would have been a sweet list.

When I do metta as an intention, I don't know what to pay attention to. I can't figure out how to only pay attention to the intention. Bodily sensations are strongly there and they come into my attention regardless of my desire to focus on the intention of metta. Advice? Also, it's good to see you teach. I met you at Abhayagiri about eight years ago.

Greetings Jared, good question and I’m not sure I’d be able to answer it in this format. The practice is complex and it shifts as you are doing it. I start by body awareness and generating pleasant feelings in the body. You are also very actively using the mind to think of other people and remembering situations of them being happy…. When I say the real Metta is intention, what I’m pointing to, is that Metta is not the pleasant sensation, I think people get confused and try to develop that pleasant feeling/sensation. Real Metta is the intention “not to harm”. If we think Metta is being happy and in a blissed out, then practicing this meditation can be frustrating. I will have to give your question more thought and possibly give another talk on it. I am editing four other talks right now, so it might take awhile to get to that. You might also look up the link to Bhante Sujato’s talks on what he learned from Ajahn Mahachatchai. I’m just now looking into those talks on RU-vid myself. Hope this is helpful ❤️.
