Lamb Keema Curry

My family hails from the south of India, and this lamb curry is a favourite amongst all of us!
It comes together really quickly as minced Lamb takes no time to cook up and features the aromatic flavour of Fennel, which is a typical seasoning in the south.

INGREDIENTS
3 tbsp, Canola Oil
1 medium Onion, finely chopped
1/2 tbsp, Cayenne Chilli Powder
2 tsp, Coriander Powder
1/2 tsp, Turmeric Powder
1 tsp, ground Fennel Powder
1 tbsp, grated Ginger
1 tbsp, grated Garlic
1 lb, minced Lamb
1/2 cup, Strained Tomato Sauce
1 cup, Water
1 large Potato, cubed
Salt to Taste
Fresh chopped Coriander to garnish
METHOD
In a large pot heat oil on medium-high, and add Onions. Cook until translucent and soft.
Then add Chilli, Coriander, Turmeric, and Fennel Powders. Toast for 10-15 seconds until aromatic. Add Ginger and Garlic, and continue to sauté for an additional 30 seconds until softened.
Add Lamb, and increase heat to high. Cook Lamb until browned, and all moisture has evaporated from the pan. Reduce heat to medium-high and add Tomato Sauce. Cook sauce until it reduces down, thickens, and begins to separate from the fat in the pan.
Increase heat to high and add water. Bring to a simmer and chopped Potatoes and salt to taste. Cook until Potatoes are tender, and sauce has reduced down and thickened.
Remove from heat and garnish with fresh chopped Coriander. Serve alongside hot Basmati Rice or Chapathis. Enjoy! :)

Love love love this. I've made it twice now. One of the times I went with regular chili powder vs cayenne for my wife who doesn't do spicy. But they were both great. Also I did my onions in duck fat rather than oil and I used chicken stock in place of water both just for some extra flavor. This has become one of my favorite recipes thank you so much for posting

I made your delicious dish with just few changes . I added pegion peas with the pototes and used regular can of tomato sauce. I also left the fennel out becuase I did not have it. It was delicious!

Could anyone tell me how “gamey” the lamb tastes in this? The only way I can eat lamb is in curry I’ve found and this looks AMAZING. Thanks.

Just made this tonight and it was so good! My 3 year daughter liked it as well. I cut the recipe in half since I only had 1/2 lb of ground lamb. I only had coriander seeds and fennel seeds so I minced them as much as I could. I also only had Italian parsley, but it was still so good! Eating the dish I could definitely feel the coriander and fennel come through on my tongue. Definitely keeping this recipe! :D thank you!

I found out what brand the strained tomato sauce is (Regina Molisana Passata Di Pomodoro, Strained Tomatoes) but cannot find it in stock. What makes this so special? Can I use any brand?

Good recipe, but no garam masala. That is so important in this dish. There are different recipies and spices from various areas, but looks good sauce all the less.

This is my first time to your video. I can't wait to try. I am just one person so this doesn't seem I will have alot left over and that's good for me. The first time I had Indian food was when my cousin married a great guy from India and his family made so many dishes for his new family it was all amazing. I love to try different foods from different countries. I am African American, Cape Verdian, Irish, American Indian and family also from the South so I have tried many types of food but Indian. Vanessa Boncalon nothing you only get the right flavour and taste with fennel, it should be readily available

Instead of fennel I used curry powder and to add a touch of sweetness I chopped up half a red pepper (not very Indian) with a tin of tomatoes then covered the top to simmer. I also added 2 whole chillies with slits in the middle to give it a little kick (should of added 3 or 4) It might not taste exactly like this dish but believe me it was so delicious. That's what great about cooking you can be creative with it and use your imagination. If you can't do fennel then maybe possibly give it a try. I also chopped up fresh mint and mixed it in with some plain yogurt for on the side. If you do try this let me know what you think.

Loved this! I used this recipe with ground beef. We didn't have ground fennel at home, so I omitted that ingredient and added a sprinkle of garam masala. I also used Kashmiri red chili powder vs cayenne. SO. GOOD. Thank you!

I like this video and you're a good instructor. It would be useful to get a copy editor to remove the unnecessary commas and capitalizations throughout your recipe because English nuts like me have to edit them when copying. Regina Molisana Passata Di Pomodoro seems to be out-of-stock (maybe due to the pandemic?). I guess I can use any strained tomatoes, yes?
