The thing is, she won't get it because she's doing pop, and she realized that- and is switching to country (new album in september) it's so hard to win pop grammys because you're combatting billie, taylor, sabrina, olivia, and SO SO SO SO many more artists, and no matter how good lana is, she won't ever win it in pop. hopefully with this new genre she can win country grammy, but it might be a challenge topping beyonce.

The A&W lyric wasn’t to be taken at face value, but more of a metaphor. The song in whole talks about losing the comfortability of childhood, and wanting to be loved. After going through lover after lover, she came to the conclusion that she is a “whore” in the eyes of the public (as you mentioned earlier) for just wanting to be loved and heard.
@StiloReacts
@StiloReacts 2 месяца назад
How I isolated it made it seem I had a problem with the actual lyric, which I understand how it came across, I’m only speaking about the subject matter and its delivery, I’m used to it being written in a different way structurally and melodically.

Her music isn’t for a lot of people, that’s fair. I’m one of the biggest Lana fans, and I usually hate every song on the first play, but they grow on you. A lot of the songs make no sense and are unrelatable, but once I discovered her story and what she was actually singing about, that really helped me enjoy the music so more. There’s a lot of depth and references that you don’t understand unless you understand her story.

Which I totally get. And it might take me years to really sit with ALL of her work. I went into this video blindly, I hadn’t even heard a LDR song until maybe a month ago, and only did the video because the women I admire in my life thought so highly of her. I said she must be really impactful.

They grow on you, they grow on you I agree. You listen and you hear some parts and it makes you wonder about the nature of the song and what it could be about. Lots of depth in her music, you never get over the harmonic symphonies even when played 1000 times.

I remember hearing Born to Die for the first time when I was still in nursing school. Her voice reminded me of a gangster siren. I remember thinking to myself, this girl sounded like no one else out there in the music industry and each of her songs was like a story in itself. She may have created a stage persona as Lana Del Rey but you could still see remnants of Lizzy Grant in her songs. Lana deserves the success and accolades she is getting. I remember people initially mocking her, calling her fake, accusing her of using her daddy's money to fund her career, calling her anti-feminist and glorifying abuse. Many of those same people are trying to kiss her ass now that she has proved herself to be an exceptional and talented artist and songwriter.

As a long time (since 2011) follower of Lana, what pushed her back in my opinion was that she surrounded herself with the wrong public feedback for a long time. She was the hottest on tumblr and among teens and young adults, but she was focused on how her industry peers and the pitchforks out there saw her work, and they were not her real audience. Her perception start to change around NFR and now it seems she finally realized she’s THE Lana del Rey.

Very common for a lot of acts who blew up via the internet like your odd future’s your asap Rocky’s etc, even The Weeknd. Which is probably why Abel embraced it so early. He had an idea of who Lana was early. I get it for sure
@danielvalentine969
@danielvalentine969 2 месяца назад
I think as an adult it was fair enough for her to want her peers and people within her own industry network to respect her. She managed to changed the tides by staying true to who she was and persisting, if she had given in too much to the adoration of teenagers on the internet, that may not have been the case. She has matured along with the music, in part because of how the industry responded to her.
@Hsj9e4653

@@danielvalentine969 from an artistic perspective yes, but marketing wise she could have been way bigger if she embraced her influence on that demographics. Of course, we’ll never know if it happened for the better or worse, because in one hand her stance of putting art first and commerce second lead her career to what we love today, but had she accepted the confidence boost that high numbers give, she could’ve embarked on way ambitious projects. Anyway, I’m happy (and I think she’s too) with how it all went (:

the line from american wh*re is sort of like setting up the second part of the song, after the heartbreaking first part, which gives necessary context to why she then goes and plays the character of being an “american wh*re”. She is essentially explaining why people end up in bad relationships and toxic ones, but instead she explains it in the first half, and portrays it in the second half. It’s important when people have such strong artistry that people look deeper into the meaning and context, because lines can easily become taken out of context and sold as bad- which has been a long running theme throughout her career, in songs such as ‘Cola’ where she blatantly mimics the so-called perfect American girl. She is a writer that is so far ahead of our time.
@StiloReacts
@StiloReacts 2 месяца назад
The point of me isolating that line in particular, just how it is delivered, to my ear, I may at times prefer it delivered differently from some of those artists mentioned in that Instagram post. She has the artistic freedom and depth to reach a wider audience, but music listeners are in so many different pockets. And we go to artists that we all best connect with. I go to artists to reflect how I feel deeply, as do you I’m sure of it. I can recognize that she connects to a lot of people, and she’s smart enough to understand how far her pen and emotional intelligence can/have taken her.
@StiloReacts

I'll tell you a curious fact, Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, the singer, was responsible for Lana getting to where she is now. He met Lana through Tumblr in 2011 and they quickly became good friends since they shared things in common. . In addition, they both helped each other while each was in her musical debut. For example, Abel shared a lot of Lana's content on his account, just as Lana shared a lot of Abel's content to help each other and thus each one give a contribution in order to be even more recognized by the musical audience and all just before each one achieves fame. Abel was the first to ask BBC Radio 1 to include 'Video Games' in their playlist. In fact, in an interview, Abel admits that when he met Lana he felt that he had found the girl who wrote her songs, that is, he had found her muse for her songs. From there came great collaborations such as Prisoner, Party Monster where Lana sings vocals, Stargirl Interlude, Lust for Life and Money Power and Glory, an unreleased remix by The Weeknd for the album Kissland but the original is from Lana's album Ultraviolence. Today they continue to have a close relationship, despite the fact that in the music industry there is normally all kinds of competition or rivalries of all kinds, they continue to express their affection and admiration for each other since on social networks through publications and interviews they have made . references between the two after their collaborations; their lyrical and musical influences that both have in common since their songs usually have a dark and complex theme, in which both singers talk about topics such as love, fame, drugs or sex explicitly; and above all their relationship as great friends in the music industry 🎶

The Swiftie cult is obsessed. They will do anything and spend any amount to keep TS on top 💰💰💰💰💰 Money buys Grammys but not forever. TS advertising her new album while on stage accepting at the Grammys this year turned off a lot of her peers. I think the Grammys realize they cannot keep giving them to her because she made the most money or they are going to have everybody else turn against them. Lana should’ve won the Grammy this year not Taylor. Many of Taylor‘s peers are catching onto her tactics and her sneaky underhanded tricks and they’re not liking it. i feel like in a way i grew up being able to romanticize the small moments, the mundane, in part because of her. there were other artists too. but i felt so trapped where i was, and i was feeling so divided from other artists and the vision they were selling of overconsumption and honestly it felt stiff and inhuman. lana felt more human to me. i used to listen to her songs with my brother and dream about moving out. as she's grown, i'm glad she's evolving as an artist in the way that she sees fit, but i still connect to her music from the beginning of her career more than the music she's been putting out lately. i did really love the song paris, texas. she has lines like "when you know you know". i actually sampled it for a beat i made because i loved that sense of intuition. and that sense of trusting oneself, which i feel so many have been steered away from. i don't like her comments about other artists and how she has kind of dragged them into the convo about her being judged. i think it's centering herself. which is a very white woman thing to do honestly. i'm studying her career right now, because i think it's not only interesting but also she's like kind of the blueprint for being "different" than mainstream yet having the mainstream spotlight on her. this was a really good video and i appreciate that you made it, even if she's not someone you resonate with musically.

Yet, she continues to maintain her integrity and doesn’t cave. Sure, she could be like everyone else and sell out arenas, a la Taylor Swift. But is the compromise worth it? She would be miserable. She had said on multiple occasions that she writes and sings for herself. But, she’s sensitive and she’s lover, so the judgment does hurt. Yet, she perseveres.

I've liked lana since was a child, like 7 or 8. My life was not easy growing up and as cliche as it sounds she is quite literally an escape for that. One of the most beautiful things about her and her music is that it is so niche to a specific type of person, especially girls. People mistake her for glorifying abuse and such but as a listener who has lived through those tumultuous bonds, it isn't a matter of glorifying it but finding an uncomfortable comfort in the sadness. Her music genuinely is a provision of hope, helping me see through the uncomfortable feelings that cannot be voiced and only felt. Your regular person or critic can not comprehend the nostalgic and dreamy feeling her words, lyrics, and melodies provide. She is an otherworldly singer something that only a select few can understand, her audience.

I became a die hard Lana fan when I first heard video games getting ready to go to highschool in the morning. I was 16 years old. A&W is another song I really love. She's speaking on how love can make you feel beautiful, at least that's how I interpret it, while also highlighting the fact that being in love makes you do crazy things. As a woman, those "crazy things" can be looking like a "whore" from the outside looking in. She's framing it as she's seeing ppl give her looks and side eyeing her for being in love. To her it's love but others make her feel like she's being a "whore". She is being blinded by love not realizing that this relationship is toxic while the outsiders can see that the relationship is not genuine. So it almost like the song is self aware of how she may look to others so she will say it before someone else can criticizes her on it. Not sure how cohesive this all sounds but I promise I can clarify.
@ladyjane8527
@ladyjane8527 2 месяца назад
I want to add that her making that post about "the culture" was during a very political time. I think it was around COVID times and it def felt like an outburst. I don't think she meant to call out only black women artists. I don't think race had anything to do with her comment. The most famous artists at that time and still currently now happen to be black. I will agree tho that the delivery was not great and is very easy to misunderstand but at the time I remember America was really becoming dismantled by conspiracy theories and the general feeling all around was just chaos. She also doesn't really ever say much publically so it was definitely an unhinged moment for sure. It can easily be misinterpreted. Music is outright sexually explicit these days. Maybe she meant that she was writing the same kind of music as those artists and not being as explicit while also taking a different perspective and making it more general.
@StiloReacts
@StiloReacts 2 месяца назад
Yeah I think that post is the main reason I wanted to do the video because I don’t like to have an opinion on things I’m not at least a little informed about. I had zero idea she had the path less traveled. I looked at her (prior to this video) pretty much how a lot of people look at Taylor Swift (which is actually what inspired me to go down her music rabbit hole as well) Often times people are misunderstood, she’s very much so misunderstood I can admit, and she’s very soft spoken in interviews, I learned in Interviews she’s like this is the music this is how I was feeling kind of thing. She doesn’t approach a lot of interviews looking to prove anything or even necessarily clear the air, (unless a song topic that is now irrelevant relevant to how she feels and see the world now) Lana actually hardly comes across my timeline. But we all operate within different social media algorithms. It can be largely divisive at times I’ll admit.
@StiloReacts

I just heard a lot about her from women I’d go on dates with from time to time. One girl said Lana basically saved her life so I was very intrigued by that.
@ladyjane8527
@ladyjane8527 2 месяца назад
I really am not a Taylor Swift fan at all. I can admit she's had some good songs but I have no desire to explore anything Taylor Swift related. My algorithm is very diverse and I love finding obscure artists and following them to stardom. Doja cat, Jack Harlow, juicewrld, were some of the artists I saw grow into stardom . I loved them before they blew up and I love that my algorithm shows me different artists and genres. I am a music fiend and I add to my playlist pretty much everyday. What I love about Lana is her mysticism and embracing of life in a way that I can relate to while heartedly. The idea of trusting in a divine plan. Life is beautifully chaotic yet nothing happens by coincidence. Its why my favorite band is Tool. I'm very big on spirituality and trusting in the universe. Music should be spiritual. It goes back to the roots of humanity I feel. Nothingness is something. Something is everything. We all assign meaning to ourselves and the way I listen to music is just for that.

To me, A&W is the best thing she's ever done. It's gritty, stingingly honest, and exactly what it feels like when you're in so deep you know you might never get out again. The lyrics are unsparing and unflinching, and more beyond hopeless than hopeless. But many people are horrified by it all. The drug-like aspects of it will probably feel foreign unless you've been there.

I can agree that the line you mentioned in the last section of your video not really fitting well or being easy to digest (- I also got whiplash from it IMMEDIATELY when I first heard it), but I think many things in life are not easy to get through, and that sometimes reality is in fact harsh. I think once you accept that particular hurdle from the lyric, it becomes a lot less jarring and more representative of a very painful story she has decided to tell us through song. AW features a few older sound clips that never made it to other records. I'm glad she found a space for her Jimmy Coco Puff clip. Also, quick mention that Asap Rocky's repost on Tumblr of Video Games in 2010 was the starting point of her main block of fame. I've read a few of your replies on other comments, and I hope you can love her one day! She's always said that first she's a writer/poet, then a musician. The music videos and photos are her last priority.
@StiloReacts
@StiloReacts Месяц назад
Yeah, I guess I was expecting her to be softer on the ears, so I heard the music first and then read on her and watched interviews and I was able to make sense of it a little more. Tumblr was a big vehicle for her, as you mentioned Rocky, also Abel was instrumental in sharing her earlier music, if I were to say a Sonic cousin to her music that’s more palatable for me is Kali Uchis. I thought Lana’s music existed in the same space, and in some cases it does. But I don’t come from the same world as Lana, so I have to find a middle ground in the music that also overlaps with my experiences so that I can get her in that way. So far Norman Rockwell is the album that was my favorite on first listen, but it may change ! Music has a funny way of growing on you as time passes as you know

As for that statement she made.. I don't think it had anything to do with race - Ariana by the way is just Italian with a tan like myself lol and a very soulful singer. But all the others do really make a lot of sexual music, in fact i can't think of anyone else to add to that list. Also, her new album was about to drop at the time, as well as a poetry book or something like that, so i think it was meant to grab your attention, and maybe a little controversy while pointing out the fact and frustration that ppl criticized her but other ppl got big off it.

Was it a little tone-deaf considering most if not all of women she named have recieved a lot of criticism about their own expressions of sexuality? Yeah, though i don't think she meant for it to be as pointed as it came out, i dont think it was coming from a place of wanting to tear down the other artists (these were all artists she likes)

She basically highlights the middle America struggles...maybe her romancing it helps her get through the pain of living it. I didn't see race in her calling out those ladies. I think she called them out, because they are doing the same thing in the way they use their platform with their struggles. Being biracial and having one middle class parent and one growing up with gangs. I see both sides. In music we want to use our experience (if you are writing your own) to capture a piece of life to share. Cheating, no clothes, all the clothes, black, white, whatever... It's an experience you are sharing. We won't understand it. Chem trails or city streets - at the end of the day. We all are seeing the same things in a different lifestyle, and in different place, in a different way...but all the same. We are at the end of the day.
@StiloReacts
@StiloReacts Месяц назад
Yeah I don’t have a problem with her using music as a vehicle to make sense of, and even heal from the pain. I also have no problem with it connecting and resonating with so many people as it does. At the end of the commentary I’m only speaking about what the ladies that were mentioned in the post, how their music resonates in a completely different frequency than her music, one that I resonate with. I think these experiences that your highlighting is the reason why music is subjective. I can’t tell anyone how to feel when her music or anyone’s music comes on, and if I’m attracted to that music, that’s the soundtrack to my experiences and life. It’s okay to not like the same things. I just have a fascinating for understanding why people create the way they do. That’s my curiosity.

@StiloReacts
@StiloReacts 2 месяца назад
