It’s strange but the history of Britain is not as bad as some people say! As a country we have made a lot of good in the world 🙏🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Fun fact. The Royal Albert Hall used to have the worst acoustics in the UK because the sound would go up into the enormous dome and come back down all Jumbled up. So they commissioned specialist acoustic people to fix the problem. Sometimes you can catch a glimpse of these giant discs hanging from the dome which were scientifically designed to reflect the sound back in an organised way. It is now one one the best venues for sound in the world. Us brits don't shout, hang flags on every building or puff our chests out which gives the world the impression that we're not very patriotic. But we really are. We just do it in a dignified manner. This is how we show our pride. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

I was there in the hall for this. About 7,000 people in the hall, 40,000 in the park (Hyde Park) outside, around 20,000 each at parks in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Maybe 10 milion on TV, millions more on radio and on TV and streamng services around the world.The last night is the final concert in a series of around 75 which run from mid July to mid September every year. Most are "just" very good classical (and other genres) music concerts. The concerts aim to bring classical music and other forms of msic to a wider audience, to include as many people, musicians or not, as possibble. The audience in the hall is incredibly knowledgeable.The last night is the"end of term party", where we all have fun . The second half of the concert is dominated by pieces which have been played for decades (the concerts have run for around 125 years). The British are deeply patriotic,. but we take it as read and very seldom let it show.This is one of the few times that we do. Even then, we laugh at ourselves. A Chinese lady I knew once said to me that the only time she was frightened in England was the last night of the proms, because it showed what the English were capable of if they were propery organized. (The audience in the hall also raise around £100,00 per year for musical charities.)

You will see lots of flag waving, mostly British flags but also flags from all around the world. This is patriotism as it should be, it makes us feel good without making everyone else feel bad. It is Britain's party but everyone is invited.

The BBC Proms (short for promenade, musical concert), is an eight week event celebrating classical music. The last night is the culmination of those eight weeks and has a distinctly party feel to it. I went to The Proms a few times with my dad and if we didn't go we'd watch it on tv together. He died nearly 27 years ago and I can't quite bear to watch it without him, but we always had a brilliant time, so lots of lovely memories.

The Last Night of the Proms is so popular - its a sort of party - that the BBC put up giant screens in Parks around the UK so people everywhere can gather together and sing with those in the Hall. All the concerts during the season (eight weeks - beginning mid July and ending about second week in September) are televised Nationally on BBCtv2 and on Radio Three, so everyone can see or listen to these concerts if they choose.. Concerts cover classical, jazz, show music, modern and popular et al. Top Artists, Orchestras, Conductors are invited from around the World, but the heaviest workload is taken on by the BBC Orchestras and Choirs. The Last Night is mainly patriotic music. The one you heard tonight was written by the English composer, Sir Edward Elgar, and is from his Pomp and Circumstance Marches. The first part of the concert often starts with a number of British sea shanties. The venue is The Royal Albert Hall, gifted to the nation by Queen Victoria in 1871, in memory of her much beloved husband, Prince Albert. His statue is outside, opposite the Entrance.

The huge crowd are assembled in Hyde Park which is literally across the road from The Royal Albert Hall, in London, UK.

And just to explain what else you were seeing. The Last Night of The Proms - which is what you were reacting to, consists of two halves. The first is reasonably serious and is a selection of classical music as all the other nights performances are. The second half is traditional and contains lots of ausience participation - as you saw - and is a medly of traditional Britisn songs. The outdoor scenes are due to the fact that the porgramme is shown live on big screens across the UK, including Hyde Park in London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow, Cardiff, Edinborough, and Belfast.

The Proms are actually broadcast globally via the BBC and are extremely highly regarded by musicians the world over. They have to be invited to play and often consider it the highlight of their careers.

The important thing to me is that the audience is comprised of people from many other free, democratic nations that have had links with or who we have supported to fight tyranny and oppression Many have based their governments on the British democratic example. Our history is not perfect but we have fought for over 250yrs and continue to fight, to ensure that every modern person, anywhere in the world has self determination and freedom from slavery or persecution. This song celebrates all of these efforts.

You should watch the Last Night at the Proms when they do 'Jerusalem' and 'Rule Britannia'. Also watch the 2022 Remembrance Service with Luke Evans (the actor) singing 'I Vow To Thee My Country'.

These songs were written when Britain had largest empire in the world. Elgar wrote this beautiful song at that time. It’s a fantastic song and Proms are great occasion but should be seen in context.

The people outside were in Hyde Park and there were 45,000 mostly all singing Land of Hope and Glory.

I love the Last night of the Proms, unfortunately I’ve never been. However, I did go to a similar last night held in a large Marquee on the River Mersey in Liverpool. They used to have a series of concerts given mostly by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and finished with the traditional songs. We got some spare seats last minute one year through a worker at the Philharmonic Hall and it was great.

British history in brief. Britain created the modern world. The first modern democracy (1688), the first to create an organisation devoted solely to science and the first to industrialise. And brought slavery to an end (at great cost to the British).

People come from all over the world, its one of the biggest and longest series of concerts in the world, they also do themed nights from time to time during the season Show Tunes, Movies Themes, Star Wars? Jazz but largely classical music (many of which are regulars like Sibelius' Finlandia) Land of Hope and Glory comes from a time when Britain "ruled the world" and felt like we deserved Respect, but its a great song, Rule Britannia is a similar theme

The proms is brilliant and the last night of the proms is more like a big party and if you look at more recent ones the footage shows you the parks where people go and it usually tells you where each park is coming from like Hide Park, Belfast, Wales and I think Glasgow???? You might also like our service of remembrance in November usually the first Sunday after 11th November.

The Proms is classical music for a couple of weeks and this is the last night which is fun. This is at the Royal Albert Hall in London every year. They can't fit everyone in the hall so each part of the Uk has a screens out side so they can join in.

In 1905 Elgar received a Doctorate of Music from Yale. At the ceremony the New Haven Symphony played several Elgar works, including this. It was a big success and Yale began using the tune at its graduations. The other Ivy League universities began doing likewise, then other schools and colleges which is how it became associated with graduations in the USA. Elgar was never happy with singing to the 1st Pomp & Circumstance March - he wrote the song as a separate piece, with different introductory music (but the same 'big tune'). But no-one else cared.

The proms started over 100 years ago in 1895 and the BBC took over in 1927. The whole event has grown and grown and is a British tradition now. Land of Hope and Glory is considered by most to be the alternative national anthem: "Land of hope and glory, mother of the free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set. God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet. God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet." Fabulous and makes me so proud to be a Brit!!!!

A potted history: The Promenade Concerts are a season of classical music concerts founded in 1895 as a 'music for the masses' concept, with cheap tickets costing only sixpence (today's equivalent around £2.50) for people to stand or walk (promenade = walk) as well as more expensive seats. Henry Wood, the co-founder, was 26 when he conducted the first Prom at the Queen's Hall concert hall and continued as principal conductor until his death in 1944. In 1941 the Queen's Hall was destroyed by German bombs and the Proms moved to the Royal Albert Hall. The BBC, founded in 1922, developed four channels (there are many more now): the Home Service (news, talks etc.) the Light Programme (entertainment), the Third Programme (mainly classical music), and the World Service (for listeners in other countries). Promenade Concerts were first broadcast by the BBC in 1927. The Proms have a tradition of inviting national and international orchestras and singers to perform old and new classical music and have also included musicals and film scores. The performers at the Last Night of the Proms are the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with an invited operatic soloist. The second half of the concert mostly follows a programme introduced by Sir Henry Wood of patriotic British music including Wood's "Fantasia on British Sea Songs" (including Rule, Britannia), Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance March no.1" (Land of Hope and Glory), Parry's "Jerusalem", and of course the National Anthem. Tickets for the Last Night are like gold, so in 1996 the BBC introduced "Proms in the Park" - now many more people can join in the occasion at various sites in the UK.

It gets better at the proms. Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves, is even more overpowering. "Jerusalem" is another, about trying to re-create the Christian heaven in England, is popular too. The British do have Patriotism, but do not need to force it on the rest of the world. It is for us to enjoy, and welcome other nations in their own patriotism too if the countless different flags at the Albert Hall mean anything.

The proms were cancelled last year out of respect for the passing of our queen, Queen Elizabeth II. The 2023 seasons proms will start up again running from 14th July to 9th September. The proms started in 1901 and though at first it was off and on again over the years, since the second world war, last year was the only time the last night at the proms was cancelled.

It's the one night of the year when the British really get patriotic. But it's an inclusive patriotism where you see the flags of many nations who are all welcome even if they don't like us very much. The music and lyrics typify ideals for all mankind.

British people aren't as openly patriotic as say Americans or a number of other countries however it is there and it comes out on occasions such as this. All countries have done bad things however i believe that Britain for all it's mistakes has done more good than any other country in the last 400 years and i include America in that. Thanks for sharing this…..unfortunately this event has become less patriotic as the Woke brigade are trying to cancel a number of the tunes (including this one) as they see it as a show of British Imperialism. It’s a real shame as it’s so uplifting and makes me very proud to be British 😊

Land of Hope and Glory would benefit if it were a bit more apt.Under this government there is now very little glory and hardly any hope.Mother of the free........if that refers to America then itcertainly does not mention systematic racism nor the apparent slavery of capitalism,nor the fact that you can be shot at whim by a "policeman".If it refers to the English parliament, then our freedom is even now under attack by the Tories in their latest measures against democracy.I notifiied my MP just now but I am certain he already knows.We do not have proper proportional representation anyhow and never have had,so that is undemocratic as it always has been and favours the establishment....the old boys network.I rest my case,as they say.
