Just love the detail being an ex Technician. Always interesting to see how different people do the same job. Have to say I gently disagree over lubricating main cap bolts and contact faces (indeed any torqued bolt). If specialist bolts like ARP are used then follow their instructions but lubing the threads will drastically affect the torque applied (ie it will be higher than if torqued dry). Personally I always fitted bearings dry and then added lube but its just choice. I never used the fancy 'assembly paste' and have (as you did) always used what we call 'Hypoy 80' diff oil right from the first Lotus Twin Cam engine I rebuilt. It has great stiction and has no detergent additives like a multigrade engine oil so will aid running in. A specialist racing engine builder here in Suffolk did some some work for me on a 1098 Mini engine with a BMW K Series bike head that I am building and one of the older guys said most of the specialist paste smells like Hypoy 80! I reckon this will be one of the best TDV6 engines running when its finished. Superb attention to detail.
@1chish
@1chish 2 года назад
@Rahmi Acar I was an MAN and Scania technician and they used stretch bolts but they were never lubed. I have built many truck and car engines and I always used dry bolts. My point was that some specialist bolts like ARP are manufactured for lubed torqueing. Most others should never be lubed unless the manufacturer says so.

Re: avoiding oil delivery problems in bottom end. In addition to the restriction of the cam galleries, "radius" the oil holes axially only (use chainsaw type stone matching gallery width, with lead in toward rotation direction). As a last resort, cross drilling provides optimal oiling throughout the rpm range, or full groove main brgs.. A higher pump pressure might be necessary, with HV or pressure spring change. Am sure you're aware already. Nice job on the polishing Christian.. and Vera !

Hi Christian + Vera, I have my own Discovery 3 and can relate to all the work you have done so far. I gave up taking it to the Landrover dealer, each visit seemed to be Euro1000 plus each time. I am currently doing the Exhaust crossover pipe. Land rover quoted Euro2400 for body off and pipe replacement, unbelievable. Nearly finished now, had to take gearbox off. I wish Toyota would do a land rover crate swap engine. Really enjoy your videos, please remember to fit a new Impulsgeber, Kurbelwelle CKP with trigger ring. Its a must that you use the landrover special tool Sealey VS231 Kurbelwelle Sensor Trigger Rad Installation Für Jaguar, Land Rover to get the timing correct. Keep up the good work. MINI engines few years ago had problems with axial play on crankshaft because they saved some money on making thrust bearing faces only on upper part of bearing (block). And the bearing wear totally in few thousands km. And then was a technical campaign and recall for installation of modified thrust bearings with faces on both bearing parts. Have replaced them allot. About bolt lubrication - usually oil is specified in repair manual because torque moment is calculated and tested according to lubricant. In some situations they ask to lubricate and wipe oil from the bolts, in some they ask not to lubricate because bolts are already coated. As an industrial mechanic mostly we use Molykote on thread and contact face as required.
@Vera_and_Christian

Wow great job guys if the crankshaft ever needs replacing (OMG I hope not ) in my Disco 4 I’m definitely coming to see you , such care and precision unlike anything you would get in a dealers workshop unless they are working on there own vehicle of course, I hope all the rest goes back together ok this seemed really complicated to me. Best regards Richard ,East Grinstead UK.

😅👍 But I truly hope that we will never ever have to do such a repair ever again. At least not for a while. 🙋‍♀️Vera

I am really enjoying these videos - thanks - and I bet that engine will be better than new by the time Christian has finished it. - Vera, please make sure that Christian buys you a NEW toothbrush and does not just put the old one back. 😉 😂

Vera/Christian. Just wanted to say yet another great video. Even though I know I would never have enough skill or knowledge to attempt such a gargantuan task, it was so entertaining to see you share this post. With us all. Thanks and cannot wait for the next instalment. Thanks guys👍

27:31 He's getting carried away with the minutiae of measurements, he's measuring the computer screen seemingly as a matter of subconscious instinct when speaking. This is no doubt due to the lack of proper tea in German workshops.

😅👍 But that is because I get no time off to fix tea. I am glad that I get time off to fix lunch. 🙋‍♀️ Vera

@@Vera_and_Christian This is where the German workshop fails. The tea making facility is IN the British workshop. Kettle, milk, sugar bowl, tea bags all right there. Pint or half pint mugs at the ready. The British tea making process is similar to breathing, it all happens very naturally, very ergonomically, no need to wander off.
