The '4' part of the Discovery's name refers to the fact it's the fourth version of a car that has improved in giant leaps since 1998. The latest Discovery looks much like the third edition, but it's actually in a different league for cabin quality. What's more, the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine is a real gem, it's powerful yet quiet and very smooth. Land Rover calls its Discovery 'the world's most versatile car' and it's hard to fault that claim. Of course, you'll pay handsomely for that versatility, but few cars combine off-road prowess with practicality and luxury feel the way the Discovery does.

And 10 years on from when this video was posted, I used my Disco 4 as a limousine last night to transport my daughter and two friends to their Prom. 12 years after its launch and its still just as good today as it was then.

Our 2011 LR4 has 98,000 miles on it and many of them are clocked in on mud roads. It was actually a rescue vehicle when Hurricane Sandy hit. Raised the suspension up and was able to forge through about 4-5 feet of water on NY streets. Lovely Land Rover and looking forward to get another! Very dependable and a great drive for such a large vehicle.

This is a fantastic car! My family owns one, I am 190cm and I sit in the 3rd row and I pretty much fit comfortably. Knees good head good. 100% recommendation. If you don't want or need 7 seats then a rangerover is the best 4WD and luxury but this is pretty damn close

I got one 18 months ago and it's brilliant. No reliability problems on the 4 and it is the most versatile thing on the market. You either love or hate the way it looks but living in Australia it is the best go-anywhere, pull anything 4WD I could find and drives like a dream. Costs a fortune but worth every cent.

Very good video, especially the last bit: "three cars in one". I have a black LR3 4.4 V8 and "imagine" it as a Bentley or Rolls. However I have just done a 2500 km holiday trip with my family. Amazed at the ease it moves the 4 of us plus all our stuff over long distances (did 1100 km the first day). Don't do 4x4 at all---love the car too much.

What's the overall reliability like on things like the engine and air suspension. I'm thinking of changing from my V8 Cayenne S with 4.5 and have an no real issues with it. Would a LR be as good?

The reason for the split boot/trunk. Is to allow access when hitched up to a horse box trailer. It’s a great design that some other brands don’t have.

Discos are heavy but brilliant. I am not sure that it's size is bad in traffic. You and other road users adjust. I have a Golf GTI and a 5.4 m Peugeot Boxer van. The van is easier in all traffic.. much. I have had 3 rear shunts in cars over the last 2 years but no problems ever with the Boxer van. I use it now for shopping and picking my missus up from the train station daily. The Disco (better than my van in every way) would cope with congestion fine.

+Allan Lague after some research I ended up getting the Land Rover Dicovery 4 HSE Luxury SDV6 3.0L 2013 model. Girlfriend loves it job done lol, just keepin my fingers crossed that she passes her driving test now. Its a beautiful car it really is a pleasure to drive and its all singing an dancing its quite a posh car it drives like a limo its really smooth and has a unique engine sound and I keep forgetting it can go off road. Drove it through a Forrest the 1st week and it felt like it was evening out the ground. Yes beautiful car its full leather privacy glass the wheels only come standard with the luxury model black and diamond cut bright steel 20'' ...im still learning why all the buttons do but my Girlfriend knows what they do she's read the manual about 5 times haha.

I do agree with you about the noise at speed though gets annoying after about 45 minutes but what you forgot to mention(I know the review is 2 years old) is the reversing camera and the sensors that make parking easier

One guy from my hometown bought it and actually damaged the engine by driving through normal puddles - note that LR specifies the Discovery's maximum water depth allowed at 700mm! And the best part is, the LR claimed this isn't covered by the warranty so the guy had to pay for a brand new engine from his very own pocket, and as you can imagine, it wasn't exactly cheap.

Depends on where you are living. Here where I live the Discovery is much more expensive than the Toyota Land Cruiser or the Mitsubishi Pajero/Shogun. And from personal experience I can say that the Disco is more comfortable to drive but the reliability in cold and humid climates is poor.

My fave car so far. I Own 2011 grey. A bit worried coz the back up rear camera died after 6 months but it's under warranty and no problem till now. It's truly luxurious inside, the front seats are like thrones, and it's very very comfortable. Ride quality is up there with the likes of S-Class or Range Rover. I'd choose this over Toyota LC all day. LC doesn't feel expensive inside yet it is much more expensive than Disco.

Ok good video but I'm confused about these Land Rover engine's and It's stopped me from getting one. I would like a Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0L SDV6 HSE 2013 model with Park Assist, is this possible? Now the confusion: There is a 2.7 tdv6 & a 3.0L tdv6 & also a 3.0L sdv6 & I am being told that these 3 engines are identical and the only difference between the 3 engines is the way they are tuned and the 3.0L sdv6 has more power out of the 3. Could someone confirm this as being true because even the Land Rover salesmen couldn't tell me and he couldn't tell me what HSE stood for and that put me off getting the car. I asked the salesman how long he had worked at this place and he said 10 years! Anyways I thanked him for his time and took his card and i probably will contact him to find me a black LR Disco 4 3.0L SDV6 HSE 2013 model with park assist once I get to the bottom of this spec and engine confusion. It's a gift for my girlfriend I don't want to get the wrong one. .

For 2005-2010 models: S - base spec, SE - mid spec, HSE - high spec. For 2010-2015 models: GS - base spec, XS - mid spec, HSE - high spec. For 2015 - present (if buying new): Graphite (same as XS but with all the options available to the XS included), Landmark (same as HSE with all the options ticked, except rear dvd entertainment system) Engines - 2005 - 2010: 2.7TDV6 diesel with 170bhp or 4.4V8 with 300bhp. For 2010 - 2013: 3.0TDV6 with 210bhp (Commerical spec), 3.0SDV6 with 245bhp (everything else). For 2010 - Present: SDV6 245bhp (Commercial), 3.0SDV6 with 256bhp (everything else) Parking assist is available on all models, however a GS spec will only have the sensors, whereas the XS and HSE have the camera, although the camera is a cost option so you may want to check the specific vehicle before you buy it. Some people assign meaning to the trim levels, for example Standard, Standard Extra, Higher Standard Extra. However it is more likely that they mean nothing, a bit like Mercedes Benz used to have "Avantgarde" as a trim level, however an E320 CDi in Avantgarde trim is neither a radical, experimental, nor unorthodox piece of art. The word "avantgarde" is simply a tag attached to the trim to denote it as being higher up in the chain than the base model.

I have recently had a very bad experience with my Discovery 4 only 3and half years old. I have done 85k on it, serviced regularly. I was driving recently and the engine ceased. I pulled over to the side and the car wouldnt start again. I towed to my local land rover and I was told the engine is completely dead.I have replace the engine which will cost me £14,800. Land rover has offered 30% of the cost which to me is very disappointing. My car is still with them and I dont know what to do.

I really like this Land Rover over the rest. I don't know why I like this one so much. The Evoque seems too girly to me and the LR2 I don't care too much for. I just wish I could afford to buy one and keep it running.

Iv had a discovery 1,2, & 3 & I have got to tell you Land Rover there is something missing on this model that really bugs me to see & it does not look right. Where the bloody hell are the front seat grab handles at the side of the head rests. Re-instate them please, this is one feature the discovery can not loose.

Its funny how everyone complains about reliability of Landrovers. I dont own one, but have been looking.....on a limited budget I might add. Every single one of them seems to have 150k+ on them!! I even saw one with 312k on the other day!! I know they can be a pig if, sorry, when they do go wrong but you gotta lov'em!! Not sure on the disco 5 tho!!

I am done with my loan for my Prado and contemplating to get an Disco 4. Pro-s Disco 4 is "cooler" Cons Im happy with my Prado as it did not cause any problem AT ALL in 5 yrs. I have the nasty filling that the Disco will do. I went too personal abt it and treat him as my bro. Finally I am done with the LOOOAANN and can just enjoy some extra bucks. Any ideas?

Superdsheppard no just no!! my uncle owns one had to replace the transmission in 3 months after that he got under a flyover filled with water not upto 700mm but it's engine has to be changed.
