Our Land Rover Discovery 3 had a HDC and a DSC fault. Again. Just another normal Saturday in a Land Rover owner life.
We also do a brake bleeding using the GAP IID tool more or less sucessfully and we service the electric parking brake (EPB). Nothing special - no worries, not a Toyota. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.
Vera & Christian
Our LR3 is a 2006 with the 2.7L TDV6 non DPF Diesel engine with about 245t km at the time this video was released. We do all our maintenance and repairs on both of our Land Rovers by ourselves. No LR shop will ever lay hands on our Discoverys and so far we are doing ok.
Please check out our videos every Sunday, even if you drive a Toyota. ,

Christian you are correct… The ABS bleed sequence is the same as a usual brake bleed by pumping/and pressure/vacuum the fluid… the ABS actuation is just to move fluid through the valve blocks and remove air. 👍

At 23 when torquing spacer if you have the torque wrench handle across the centre of the wheel you have the correct torque on the fasteners but less torque or turning moment to cause the wheel to turn. This is because the effective length to turn the wheel is from the centre of the wheel to the handle end. It's a useful trick.

I love the rolling replacement of all the parts on the LR. Soon you will have a new LR again, but then the dreaded rust will then need attention. Great entertainment and very good technical explanations. Thank you

I have only jacked my LR3 with my trolley jack. I have not used the suppled jack once, I hope I never need to. My son (apprentice mechanic) replaced my rear rotors & brake pads a few weeks ago, he did it at home. I just watched as he did everything. The parking brake shoes were like new, with no rust. Nothing was seized and no rust/corrosion. We don't have that issue in Australia unless you don't thoroughly wash your vehicle after driving on the beach or back into salt water when launching a boat.

Very entertaining and informative. I still have my 05 D3 bought new. For the last 14 years I have done most of my own servicing - often preventative. No GAP IID when I started, so still using a Nanocom Evo. That also left me confused when using the ABS service function. Many thanks for sharing Barn1e

The GAP 11 is heralded to be the best aftermarket, but it is so expensive, as you mention. I bought an ICARSOFT and it was no help fixing my RRS- but the Facebook forum was! It just shows you not to believe the hype. For brake bleeding, I use my son because I can shout at him. It works.

I want to thank you both, Christian and Vera for your videos and technical knowhow regarding the Land rover LR3, it has helped me with many a task on my LR3s. I have a question regarding an issue I have discovered with an 08 HSE LR3 that I j recently just bought for a song ($1500), simply the previous owner drove in the worst snowstorm last winter and instead of not driving on an un-plowed road, the individual did and basically performed the plowing with the LR3, simply, he blocked the radiator with ice and the v8 over heated and the thermostat housing cracked, he had the vehicle towed to a local garage to replace the thermostat housing, the garage mechanic, lifted the inlet manifold and (who knows why??) did not replace the inlet manifold gaskets hence engine would not run (no surprises there), when I approached the owner, he had given up on it and wanted to get rid of it as it had stood on his property for a year, hence the $1500, I removed the inlet manifold and cleaned the mess then replaced the inlet manifold gaskets and when I started the vehicle, initially the engine was quiet, but a little time later it started knocking , the sound is on the top, I read up on it and it was suggested that it was possibly the VVT as the sound in what looks like near the cams, I replaced both and it still makes the sound, in my further reading on the net, it seems that the issue is probably is to do with gummed up hydraulic lifters and possibly timing chain tensioners, since the engine has not run in a year, I just need you thoughts on this, thanking you in advance, keep the videos coming, luv them.
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian Год назад
This is difficult to diagnose as it is not a common issue. It was caused by special circumstances or unqualified repair. On the V8 the chain guide tensions are known to fail. I have not heard of Rocker and lifter issues. The direct consequence of the idiots actions would be the car overheating (in my opinion). So a head gasket failure, piston damage or injector issues or similar top end issue is likely. A bearing issue would show glitter in the filter or oil pan. Christian

From memory and I stand to be corrected. Park brake service. Tighten adjuster until 50lbft (in old money) registers on torque wrench on centre hub nut then slack adjuster 8 clicks . Any time we changed discs we serviced/cleaned handbrake shoes and/or replaced as necessary. Used Autologic to drive cables into service position so if that's not available a work around that would be an interesting video. Snap-on supplied me with a brake bleeder. Ran on 12volts and from memory pressurised the master cylinder reservoir and fluid to 5lbft (old money again!) This allowed the wife to stay at home and truly was a one person job. The low pressure avoids activating any abs shut off/bias valves. You all have good patience there. I see a Toyota in your future lol

I believe your channel is one of the best newer Land Rover related channels available and I hope you continue to grow exponentially. The format is excellent and entertaining and the technical detail is superb. I personally think a production company should pick you up for a TV program. There is a laugh a minute with the "German Precision" banter between you both. "OMG" haha! I was born in Germany but I have lived most of my life in Straya slang term for (Australia). Maybe you could learn some of our linguistics as a laugh. Like G'day mate! or No worries! or Crikey! Our family drive a few land rovers, RR Sport L320, RR Sport L494 and Evoque L538. We have in the past had the original discovery 2 many many years ago and it was a powerful vehicle. We used it many times 4WD on FRAZER Island here in Queensland. It did very well with it's V8 engine. I just had my Range Rover sport serviced and my wallet is crying and not talking to me currently as it is still in shock....lol All the very best from the land down under....

Yea, that DSC procedure is ridiculous. I just went thru the same thing on my '08 BMW 750i. Ended up like you guys using a pressurized bleeder; but instead of having help pumping the pedal, I have a one-way valve on the bleeder hose. I put it on the bleeder, open the bleeder up, then pump the brake pedal myself. Way easier and no potential for divorce...well, not for that anyway. As always, a great vid and yet another encouragement for me to get an LR3. Now, if I could just find one in this crazy used car market we have going now.

Well done for getting the GAP tool, it will be helpful. As for the EPB, mine broke over a year ago and I haven't bothered to replace the $900 module. One of the reasons I didn't replace it is because what I consider a flaw. I got stuck in a big bomb hole at a bit of an odd angle (I was captured by a tree root underwater) but the bloody Land Rover then kept applying the EPB, which then failed. So here I am stuck in a hole with the EBP locking my rear wheels. The EPB should have released upon momentum (nope) and nor could I disengage it by taking out the cupholder and pulling up on the release cable. The only way to get going was to join the LR in the mud, carefully feel around the back of the wheel for the EPB cable and cut the buggers off with my bolt cutters on each wheel (BTW these are quite difficult to cut). I was then able to extricate myself.

I think another video where you clearly and in detail go through each step of the bleeding procedure would be helpful. Hi Christian, I don't think there is anything wrong with your front shock/airbag. It just gets a build up of dirt on the bag former because the front struts don't have a protective rubber boot. The GAP tool works. The action for pumping is the same as the old method - you repeatedly push the pedal for 6 or 8 times and then you keep it pressed. At the wheel you open and close the bleed valve. Then repeat the pumping process until it tells you to move on. Vera was correct at the beginning as she wanted to pump the pedal. Good luck. How about the pesky air compressor C1A - gallery not venting fault fix for a video suggestion

With those shreaded boots, maybe try making some from neoprene (wet suit arm or leg). I'm sure Vera could make some slick ones that lace up. This week we have started having faults and some that just keep coming back after clearing. I replaced the front struts 2 weeks ago and was super happy with the D3. Faults are scary compared to mechanical parts.

@@Vera_and_Christian Any guesses on why they go that way were dashed when your other side was unharmed and happy. I would think even small branches at the wrong angle could do it, but just guessing. Given how important the air bags are, im surprised they dont have a sheet metal or plastic shield.

Remember just push down on pedal and let it return. Makinng sure you have fluid in resoviour all the time while doing it. Starting furthest away from master cylinder first and work your way beck. You are looking for bubbles in the bleed pipe. When the are gone its done lock up bleed screw. And then its done

Yes we know, that is how we have always done it for 30 years now. We just expected the GAP tool to have more precise instructions. Most of our viewers, having a GAP tool, have never ever done a bleeding procedure and expect the GAP to tell them what to do. We try to include GAP content in our videos, but we are not always all that happy with that tool. However, we used it on Saturday for our alignment job, and it was absolutely perfect that we had it at hand. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

Very entertaining. Main takeaways for me: the stuff about almost getting a divorce a couple times "open the plug, spray some WD40 in, and close the plug." "German is no good, I gotta do it in English" I still don't understand why there is no Taco Bell in Germany. Philip is amazing.

Christian… Cooper slip is old school and not suitable for your hubs and wheels… it causes a reaction and galling of alloy components… get some Permatex Aluminum anti seize paste- it’s designed for alloy-alloy and alloy-steel components. Copper slip is only suitable for steel-steel components- copper slip on alloy-steel like you hubs and wheels it can ‘cold weld’ the wheels on👍 One note, you have the wheels off so often you probably will not have a problem but people who don’t take their wheels off at least annually could be stranded with a stuck wheel .

As always an extremely informative video , must confess I used a vacuum pump on each wheel , large bottle filled with brake fluid on the master , started with the furthest wheel first , then after doing them then attached the gap iid for the ABS module , just found it easier doing it that way as it was just me , also used class 6 brake fluid as JLR specified , thks again for sharing and looking forward to when u change the rear disc / pads , know the gap iid has a feature where u can disable the EPB , plus may i ask what do u think of the drilled and grooved discs please as heard there supposed to be better , always fantastic getting ur option seeing ur very knowledgeable, all the best to both of u, take care 👍👍, ps, was going to post a link of the one I used but can’t post them here as for some reason they get removed by utube

Not sure if this helps and only 9 minutes in so far. Pump usually means push pedal and release about 5 times. So in this context you push and release 5 times then hold pedal hard. Then as bleeder is opened the still pushed pedal moves downwards.

Hi I would check the rear upper wishbones front bush for tire wear I had the same problem and the front bush on the Upper rear wishbone head gone but I would check all the other bushes at the same time and the bolt was seized in so use plenty of WD-40 when fitting a new wishbone you have to put the bolt in first before you can install the arm you’ll see why because the body gets in the way there is a slot in the mountain for the bolt to slide through when installing the wishbone

Loved the video and feel bad that I changed my rear brake shoes and disks without doing the 10 click procedure but did manage the wife in the driving seat bleed procedure without any divorces to change the brake fluid. 😜 I had the same left front tyre wear pattern so used a cheap laser alignment tool to adjust. Swooped the rears for the fronts and now waiting to see if the wear pattern comes back. The car does drive straight now so I fixed that. What thickness are your wheel spacers and do the TuV like them?
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 2 года назад
Sorry for the late reply. My car drove straight also. In the driving behavior, there was nothing to indicate that something is off, also no clonking noise from worn out parts. We have not been to our TÜV yet. Due to Corona, you had to get an appointment like in two months time. And now, we forgot since there is always something elso to do on that car 😅👍. But I have to go soon anyway to get our new 2 year TÜV, and then we'll see. I believe we have the 20mm, but here is the link to the video where we installed them with all the important information, like what is street legal here in Germany. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MfXb24Ln7cE.html🙋‍♀️Vera

Hmm, strange. I've never has a rear strut boot spilt in 640,000km on my Discos and I do plenty of off road. You missed the 2nd part of the brake adjustment, i.e. loosen the 4mm hex bolt release, tap the drum and retighten. Note the notches on brake backplate to help you locate the 2 adjustment positions of the drum for the handbrake adjustments. I find the IID tool ABS bleed to be confusing so I do a full bleed on all wheels in the old fashioned way. I think some of the problem is that GAP's (BTW its name is the Gap Eye Eye Dee tool :) first language is French as they come from the French part of Canada and sometimes their translations are a bit strange. Connect with Patrick at GAP, he's a great guy and really helpful.
