@Joel Self - Outdoor Instructor Are you planning more videos showing the capabilities of the Freelander 2? RU-vid is missing some genuinely good Freelander content. It would be great to see it doing some mud, off-road, and the winching and towing you talked about. I have a 2011 I am setting up similarly for some camping and travel around the Pacific Northwest of the US. I'm English, but living in Oregon. I have recently fitted the rails, crossbars, and am fitting a roof top tent this weekend, battery power and solar etc. My Tyre choice was the Atturo Trail Blade XT, though I did look at the Geolanders. I am also considering the Muddy Mods Winch mount. Good job, all the best.

Hi Louis! First off I'd just like to thank you for your kind comments about the video and my vehicle, Im very proud of what its become! And to address your question regarding future FL2 content, yes absolutely! We are in lock-down here in the UK still and so cant make any non-essential journeys. (Such as to play in the mud.) But when we are able to get out again I hope to be filming alot of the byways and greenlanes here to show how capable the FL2 is! 👍 If you haven't already joined them then I suggest checking out the following Facebook Groups: • Muddy Freelander • Freelander 2 Owners Group (FL2OG) In the groups you'll also find alot of offroad content - Some of which is posted by me. Stay well. Cheers Joel Self Outdoor Instructor

Thanks Morgan! Glad you enjoyed the video, I don't know if you've see but there are quite a few FL2 clips here on my channel! The mods do indeed affect motorway driving but only by way of damaging your MPG (no other ill-effect because of it). I've taken my vehicle to the extreme end of the modified spectrum but that results in me getting between 23-26mpg on a motorway run. I hope that helps 👍🚜

Good video. I too don't like the bush cables, on the basis of what they would do to a pedestrian if one happened to collide with the car on the road (it does happen, and cars are designed to minimise damage to a human body that comes into contact). If you only fit them for green laning then fine.

Thanks Hayden! The speedometer will be out by a small amount (roughly 8%) which I account for in my driving. Other than that there are only positives in my experience! Do you know.... is it a permanent four wheel drive, like a Subaru outback or is it two wheel drive until selected as 4wd? Nice video! Great tyres!
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor 4 года назад
Hi Bob, its not a strict full time 4wheel-drive system, no. During normal driving the majority of power is run to rear wheels (I have been told this is around 80%), the remaining power (20%) is sent to the front wheels, however when the system detects a need for a shift in power the Haldex controls that appropriately and will adjust the power ratio to each wheel.

@@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor You see, that's your biggest problem... You have a Haldex as your centre diff :( Same as the VW city 4x4's. Get a Full Locker in center, a full locker in the rear and a Haldex in Front! Then you are talking... My Duster comes out with a Center Diff Locker and for 300 pound I installed a LockRight locker in the rear axle and another 340 pounds got me a Torsen in front! Here in Africa you won't make it past the 1st sand dune with a build like that. Looks good on grass though...
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor 3 года назад
@@MrGoMariothough I appreciate what you're getting at I beg to differ with regards to the dunes. Online I see quite a number of FL2s driving in deserts, beaches (sand in general) and they cope with it brilliantly. - I run the 'Freelander 2 Offroad Group' and our members regularly post videos and photos of their days in the rough. (This includes our Australian and South African members who seem to regularly drive in the sand.) - The key feature to note is that in deep snow or very soft sand you can turn off the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) which allows you to get through these types of terrain more easily. - Obviously in addition to the 'given' factors (good tyres, correct tyre pressures, correct terrain response mode and appropriate driver skill level.) 👍

Would a Freelander 2 make a good 1st car? Also in the UK so insurance might be a pain. Cheers Joel :)
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor 4 года назад
Hi PyroPlays, thanks for your question! 😁👍 The FL2 is a great vehicle and I love mine to bits. Very capable on the road and off the road BUT I can see some 'cons' to it as a first car - some of those are based upon your driving experiance and vehicle needs (so some such as size might actually be positives.) • They are big vehicles and handle like it too! • They are expensive to run (poor MPG and being a landrover they do need repairs from time to time!) • They have 'large engines' -, atleast as far as UK insurance companies are concerned for new drivers (2.2L) • They are addictive! LandRover life is something you'll easily get sucked into and you'll find yourself modifying them and getting involved in all sorts of silly days out in the mud! • They are (depending on the company) expensive to insure for young drivers. Now all of that said I think you'd love owning one. They are brilliant in so many ways, just be prepared for those things listed above. I've always owned 4x4s since I started driving and this is by far the best of them as far as comfort and capabilities go. I've done some other videos about the FL2 so do check out the rest of the channel if that's of interest to you. And if you have any other questions do let me know and I'll do everything I can to help! 👍

@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor 2 года назад
Hi John These lamp gaurds are readily available for the Freelander 2 but only one shape exists for the front and for the back so depending on your light type. Particularly the rear was changed on later models, you need to be sure you they will look right before buying. Rears can be attained on Ebay from a multitude of suppliers from £20-£50. The front ones can be bought from the likes of MuddyMods (www.muddymods.com) but again ensure you'll be happy with the look and how they line up with your lights before fitting. The pre-facelift and post facelift front gaurds are aesthetically the same but mount differently on account of the different shaped grill. If you need more information or would just like to chat more about the Freelander 2 then you'd be very welcome to join us in the 'Freelander 2 OffRoad Group (FL2ORG)' on Facebook! with no Low range, does it make FLD2 somewhere in trouble??
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor 4 года назад
Hi Jiro The FL2, as you mention, doesn't have Low-range - however if you have an Auto and Land Rover's terrain response system then they are more than capable in the rough - and in some situations it makes the driving easier than just having a straight low-range... to really top it off though having my oversized tyres, this means I maintain traction so much better and really can crawl through obsitcals in the same way as you can with low-ratio... I have yet to come up against an obstical I couldn't negotiate because of a lack of low-range. To see the vehicle in action and really get a handle on its capabilities check out my FL2 playlist but particularly this recent clip I uploaded - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RlKeXvU04uw.html I hope that all helps! If you have any other questions then be sure to ask!

I'm in US, anyone knows any models of winch and mounting brackets that will fit 2015 LR2? Any places in Michigan or California that will do these modifications? Seems like it's so difficult to find stuff for LR2 in US...appreciate any help!

MuddyMods in the UK ship internationally and are, to the best of my knowledge, the only company who currently make a winch mount for the LR2. 👍

hey joel. would you get this car as a student ? i have enought money for the car itself in good condition .cheers!

Hi Joshua Sadly this landy isnt very budget freindly so it probably isnt the best motor for a student - MPG is not great, many get about 24-26mpg, I get 20mpg... that in itself costs a lot but add onto that the cost of repairs and modifications it really mounts up! If you're very spanner handy and have the space to do work on it yourself then it could be a great vehicle for you! You'll certsinly fall in love with it, they havw that classic landy charm about them! For buying advice and other anwsers you might be looking for check out the facebook group I run - "Freelander 2 OffRoad Group (FL2ORG)" the owners there will be able to provide you a wealth of knowledge. I hope that helps! 🚜😁👍 Joel Self Outdoor Instructor

Hello. can I ask? Where to climb the ladder? Thanks Honza
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
@JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor 4 года назад
Hi Honza Thank you for your question. The ladder was made by Mantec. Unfortunately they seem very rare, I know I've purchased the last oje available from new in the UK so depending on where you are an after market parts supplyer may have one in stock - otherwise it will be a case of finding them on Ebay... but like I mentioned above, they are VERY rare. Good luck with your search! They are a great addition to the vehicle particularly if you are loading equipment onto the roof alot. 👍
