Landing on runway 21 at Sedona Airport in Sedona, Arizona. I can highly recommend this airport and FBO. I hiked down to the city and then had lunch at The Mesa Grill located on the field. Great day.
For my light sport, 70 kts on final and 60 kts over the numbers. Because it sits on on a mesa and there is plenty of runway, I come in a little high in case of any down drafts.
I have been flying the Arizona skies for over 50 years. The Sedona airport is a wonderful destination. Just a quick tip. It has always been standard procedure to land runway 3 and depart runway 21 at Sedona unless the wind is very strong out of the West. This is due to the noticeable uphill gradient of runway 3, and the potential for very strong turbulence from the terrain off the approach end of 21. It can get quite busy, especially on weekends, but awareness in the pattern and working out opposite direction takeoff and landings over Unicom between pilots has always been good there. BTW, the nicest place left in Sedona is the airport, what used to be a quiet small town has grown into a densely developed tourist trap. The airport is up on 6:25 a mesa well above the town, and is the only quiet place left. There used to be a resident mule deer herd on the mesa, and I would have to buzz the runway to shop them off at nighy, and fly a quick close in pattern to land before they wandered back. In addition to the restaurant, there is a nice lodging facility next to the airport which is very private and relaxing. One other thing - if the wind gets too high from the west, the rough terrain off the approach end of 21 can cause turbulence to the extent that a see landing cannot be completed. I have experienced that a few times, but it doesn't happen too often.
