Standard practice (at least here in the west) is for the ribbed wired to be neutral and the wire with writing to be hot.

Awesome this helped me so much with wiring. How do you wire them to the main line together if they are farther apart? Let’s say I have two lights in one bed and and the cord from the light is 18” to the main line. The other light has 18” too but is 24” from the main line. They are too far apart to wire together and then wire to the main line if this makes any sense.
@aklighting8292

I'll take a stab at it, I think I understand what you are saying. What you're going to have to do is use whatever excess wire you have from the light closer to the main wire and attach it to the light that is father away so it can reach the main wire. Example: The light that's close to the main wire might need 10 ft of wire, so the extra 8 ft can be connected to the other light's 18ft to make it possible to reach the main light 24ft away. Hope that helped!

What kind of direct burial wire do you use? LVL, UF, something else?

My issue: new wiring: all lights (8 led fixtures) new total 75 ft worked on first set up. Later that night tired to see how they looked and the first light in the chain is bright the secound is very dim the 6 other lights are not working. The wire is warm to the touch. ??
@DurpeeSlurpee
@DurpeeSlurpee Год назад
Wire being warm to the touch is a sign of too much current running through too small of a wire. 2 solutions, use thicker gauge wire or increase the voltage at the tap. The other issue could be arcing at one of the connections, indicating a bad connection

I presume these waterproof wire connectors come in various sizes. What size are you suggesting for general use?

Yes they do, but the size I use are the easiest to find, any other size you'll have to special order. I would suggest using this size.

Adam , I doubt you'll see this but I saw you make a mistake . Those waterproof grease tubes your supposed to push the wires and wire nut all the way in so they coat the nut completely . The way your doing it, water can easily get to the exposed copper

How do you wire a T connection? The transformer is in the middle of the light run and i have 12/2 burial wire coming off the transformer. I need to run lights to the left and the right but am unsure of what type of connector to buy and also how to wire it. Any help would be appreciated.
@aklighting8292
@aklighting8292 4 года назад
Wiring a T connection is simple. All you need to remember is instead of connecting 4 wires (2 words and 2 rough), you are connecting 6 wires because there are now 3 wires instead of 2 wires. 1 wire from the transformer, 1 wire from the left side, and 1 from the right side. The best connectors are the Dryconn brand from a local irrigation store. Hope that helped!

I know almost nothing about lighting but would like to. I looked inside a transformer yesterday at a system that was not working and one of the wire nuts was melted. Thoughts?!!
@aklighting8292
@aklighting8292 4 года назад
Do you have a halogen system not an LED system? Most of the time when I see this issue it's because the system is halogen and there is a lot of electricity going through those wires. If those wire start to touch inside the transformer, they will start melting the wire nut. Once the wire nuts (is) are melted and expose the wires, the transformer will shut off if any wires tough each other. If you have an old transformer with a fuse in it, you will need to replace the fuse. If its a newer transformer, you'll just need to flip the switch. But make sure no wires are touching and replace the wire nut. Hope that made sense.

How much do people charge to do landscape lighting
@aklighting8292
@aklighting8292 3 года назад
Usually ranges from about $150-$350 a light fixture. Most companies charge $250-$350. My company (AK Lighting) charges around $150, because I want to offer professional lights at an affordable price.

@@aklighting8292 Wow . So a 8 light job can be a cost of 1200$. How do you get people to go for that. I struggled to get someone to allow me to do it for 695 for 6 lights . . . . I had to cut down 100 dollars more just for her to do it. . . . Please help . . . I want to make this a career for me. I thoroughly enjoy installing landscape lighting. Im a journeyman electrician but I enjoy doing this more.

Honestly it depends on 3 things. 1 your geographical area and 2. (Which is more important) the wealth class of people you're installing lights for. I rarely install under 10 lights. Most of the times I do it's like pulling teeth to get paid the amount I charge. It's way easier to sell a 14- 25 light install and get paid for it than a 6-12 light install. 3. If you're an electrician installing lights on the side, you cant charge much because it's not what you're known for. Most people go to electricians because they dont want to pay full price and expect electrician to be A LOT cheaper. (Sude note) every electrician I've known who installs landscape lighting, stinks at it. They buy homedepot lights and put no thought in design. If I were you, I'd get pictures, reviews, and market lighting as a professional service you provide.

I have landscape lights that have a red and black wire coming out. Does it matter which wire on a zipcord (rough vs letters) I wire each of those red and black wires to if I keep it consistent?
@aklighting8292
@aklighting8292 3 года назад
White is usually goes to the smooth wire (with letters) and the red goes to the rough if you want to keep it consistent.
@DurpeeSlurpee
@DurpeeSlurpee Год назад
When you have a pair of red and black wires (in the USA,) usually red is hot and black is neutral. When the wires are the same color, smooth is hot and ribbed is neutral.

Actually, I’m sorry but I am completely new to landscape lighting. Did a little research but you are wrong in that you have to wire the wires with writing or rough edges together. All you have to do is wire anything to anything as long as everything is connected that’s all that matters even on the transformer end I paid no attention to what wires I was using on a huge run and everything works perfectly. You don’t have to pay attention people. This guy doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. I can’t believe he worked in a professional business for years, you do not need to wire certain types of wires or rough or smooth or whatever just connect everything up and you’re good to go

Hi watching from England. No1 what the Bloody hell is that yellow thing? How is that a Permanent/Safe Connection? No2 what the Bloody hell is that Penis shaped thing? I know only 12v but this Really doesn't look safe. You can't have bare wires showing incase someone touches them!!
@aklighting8292
@aklighting8292 4 года назад
HAHAHA! That comment gave me a good laugh. Yes, those connectors have a funny look to them ha. No1. Those yellow things are wire nuts...the name doesn't help my case. They are a very common part of wiring. No2 The funny shaped thing is a waterproof connector, and they are safe to use and bury in your ground. No bare wires. Everything is safe, and because it's low voltage.
