Landscape Photography & Camping in the Mountains 

There are probably quite a few people on here thinking that your 'failed' shots were actually very good! Nature isn't balanced and photographs are more than just calculations. It can sometimes be something that one person see's. You have a natural eye for photography which you have shown countless times before. As one of the most respected landscape photographers out there, you should give yourself a break, perfection is in the eye of the beholder! Great vid Thom.

15:38 "It's just good for soul." Those words resonate so much.

I’d call this a ‘classic’ Thomas Heaton video. It’s got all the elements that make your videos great, and I love to see you camping. It’s back to basics, and done very well. You say it’s good for the soul to go camping, and it really shows in your video. Big thumbs up.

In this day and age of social media where content creators curate their lives and only show their "best moments", it's great to see you still include in your videos your 'failed' shots.

My favourite Tom Heaton content. Camping in the mountains. Loved the balance in the pano due to the light hitting the hill on the left and the gap in the clouds on the right.

Whenever you stand there explaining what you are about to take I'm like "take the shot man, it's slipping away!!" Anyways, thank you for the content. I'm from Ukraine and at this time going out with my camera is not a safe and easy thing to do, so I fulfill my photography curiosity by watching videos like yours

Nice to see a classic Thomas Heaton video of some classic landscape photography. They were all beautiful shots. That camp site looked stunning. Much prefer this film to 10 minutes of watching a dart fall out the wall.

Every time something like that happens, it reminds me of the “not everything that is beautiful makes a beautiful photo”… as a way of relaxing myself and just taking a photo to enjoy the moment, instead of focusing too much in the outcome of the photo.

This is the reason I subscribed to this channel many years ago and the reason I'm still here today. such easy watching and very calming in what is a very busy world. great video as always. thank you and keep doing it. love it.

Geez, you can’t have everything. Two stunning images in one day would do quite well for me. Everything in this chapter is terrific.

Great video Tom. Really enjoyed this one, and a break from minimalism. Also good to see a couple of images in a different ratio to square or pano. Not saying I don’t like the minimalistic square or pano crop, but this made a nice change and reminded me somewhat of your early work and RU-vid videos. Last time I was up there (many years ago) I went up over Pike’O’Blisco onto Crinkle Crags and then a white out descended. As it was winter everything was white. I messed up my navigation and having decided to descend went the wrong way and dropped down into Eskdale. The phone box (pre mobile phones) didn’t have a phone in it, so I backtracked to a farm to ask if they would phone a taxi for us to get back to Langdale campsite as it was getting dark. The farmer’s wife was sympathetic to us and told us that loads of people make the same mistake, and gave us a mug of tea and a slab of apple pie while waited for the taxi in her kitchen. When the taxi arrived and picked us up, he told us that he’d made the same mistake also. Anyway the day after we decided to take the farmers wife some flowers for helping us out, but we couldn’t find the farm! It should have been just off the main path, but wasn’t there. So we were either saved by a ghost, or were worse at navigating than we thought. Not a photography story, but a great memory of being in the area and experiencing the generosity of local people.

I have been watching your channel for a while now but have yet to leave a comment to say how much I enjoy your content. I especially enjoy your hiking and camping vlogs. Being relatively new to landscape photography, I find your patience and honest respect for your craft truly inspiring. Thank you for the effort you give every week to keep us entertained. The pano image you capture in this episode is absolutely beautiful. I hope you have a great week.

Sometimes the images just don't work but the experience is what is key.

I don't often comment, however I must say I really think that the second "Image that didn't work" definitely worked, really nice shot.

As a long time fan, I really enjoy Thomas' images because they - well to me anyway - follow a simple philosophy: that is, "Less is More". I really enjoy the simple minimalist shots that Thomas presents. They draw the viewers eye(s) to specific aspects within each (uncluttered) image. Solid work again Mr. Heaton...

As a former truck driver traveling all over the US, especially the west, I often struggled like you. Beautiful light but no usable composition. The thing I learned is that when you see a beautiful light do a 180 and look behind you.

Thomas, I have said this before, and I will say it again, your videos take me to a new place every time. I try and put myself with you, watching and learning as you go along with your day. The best part about it is knowing that I have an escape chanel once or twice a week when you go on your adventures.

That square crop with the boulder in the water at sunrise was actually quite tasty !! The mood of the shot from the night before was great too !!

Even when you don't end up with images you're thrilled about your videos stay satisfying to watch. Nice work!

Fantastic views and images, such an inspirational video as well. Really want to go camping now and soak up some of that scenery for myself and try and get close to a stunning image like yours. Oh come on Thomas! You cannot be so critical about these pictures, especially the last one cropped square. As You’re my professor of simplicity and square classes, it’s another example of job well done, not to mention beautiful light. It's a great light with great "in-tent-city"....

I remember watching several of your videos where you pointed out how you struggled in summer for inspiration. Yet here you are nearing midsummer's day and revelling in some spectacular conditions and light. Which only emphasises that great light can happen at any time of the year and any time of day. One of my favourite images is a panorama i took in the height of summer as a passing storm produced the most amazing burst of light..for about a minute! Great video and superb photos, in particular love the light in the first shot and the pano.

Wednesdays have become my favourite day thanks to these vlogs where just for approx. 20 mins I can lose myself. Thank you Thomas. 🙏🏽

Thomas Heaton at his best. Great taste, great texture. Five stars. Fantastic video Tom, I think your best for a long time. I'm impressed with your photos as much as your filming - having in mind that you do it all by yourself, somewhere in between chasing the light. For me, these vidos are much more inspiring than all the great trips to Nepal or Africa.

The first shot you took I was thinking was going to be a fail, but man you have a gift. You saw beauty in that boring peak. It’s hard to get good shots like that in the middle of the day. Thanks for the inspiration.

There is no better combination than wild camping in the hills and photography, even if it can be hard work sometimes 😁 Everything you said here is so relatable, and it's very reassuring to see someone so accomplished struggle despite the light and beautiful surroundings. I'm slowly coming to accept the fact that beautiful scenes don't always make beautiful photographs, and to just enjoy the experience of trying to find an image. Excellent video as always 👍🏻

The three Tarns are difficult to shoot in the morning but in late autumn, for example November in the evening,the light hits Bowfell and makes for a beautiful composition

Haven't been out shooting and camping in the mountains in 2 years now. So looking forward to my next multiday hike, so this is my methadone. Thanks man.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Basic, well-structured. Balanced with tips, gear, location and beautiful images. Makes me want to get off the streets and into the wild for a change of pace and environment.

I like the occasional video showing the reality even the best photographers experience. So often, or most often, we see only the best work in many RU-vid videos. Not the struggle nor the failures. It is actually encouraging to see that every photgrapher at every level has difficulty some days. I appreciate the successes more, mine as well, when balanced with the real world experience behind getting them.

Absolutely phenomenal photos Thomas! Couldn’t tell from the video footage what majesty you are actually beholding in that environment. Video footage a bit washed out, which is normal. But that makes the images ever the more a glorious surprise. What light and atmosphere!!

You are not alone. I have been there at dawn four January's in a row and its hard to put a satisfying scene together. Its a spot which promises so much and draws you back because it is quite difficult to believe that you cannot organise the elements in a more satisfying configuration.The east face of Scafell catches alpenglow on a January morning but it seems too far away when shooting west over the little tarn with a wide Ange. Bowfell gets in the way of everything to the east. Sometimes the key just cannot be found.

That pano is beautiful… Great video, love your stories and adventures as always.

Thank you Tom for a beautiful hike up the hills! As a graphic designer I immediately saw the potential in that pano for the cover of your new book as a wrap-around the front and back of the book? Also, I do not agree with you and the ‘failure’ statements you made about your morning shoot at the tarn. Even though I was not there with you that morning for me that situation was all about that strong water-mirror edge with the still water reflecting the mountain peaks over the edge. I think you captured that well Tom! Thanks for letting us come with you on that beautiful hike Tom!
