In this week’s episode, I travel out west for some landscape photography in Yosemite National Park. This was my first trip ever to Yosemite and I now understand what all the fuss is about - absolutely incredible national park for landscape photography! If you’ve never visited Yosemite I would highly recommend that you do so, it will certainly be time well spent!
In this video, I photograph three separate locations within Yosemite National Park. The three locations I chose for this on location video are the classic tunnel view point, Bridalveil Falls and the Three Brothers Peaks. While photographing these locations I used my Sony 16-35mm GM wide angle lens and my new super telephoto lens, the Sony 100-400mm GM. I used the long lens a great deal during my time at Yosemite in order to capture more intimate detailed shots of this incredible landscape.
The weather was not ideal for landscape photography while I was there as each day was filled with clear blue cloudless skies, which is beautiful weather, but not great for landscape photography. So I had to get creative in order to eliminate as much of the cloudless sky from my photographs as possible. Nevertheless, I came away with some great landscape photos that I'm super happy with and share with you throughout this video.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!
-Mark D.

Thanks for bringing back very happy memories. We visited Yosemite in October 2015 for 2 days. We did a trip from the East Coast to the West Coast over a three week period. We are from England I only wish that some day we can come back again and see your wonderful Country. Thanks again, as they say you cannot take the memories away from you.

Great video Mark. I feel your pain about recording in front of people. Some people don't seem to have any problems with it as they whip out their 'selfie-sticks'. Hey, Mark! In preparation for an upcoming trip to Yosemite, I have been searching youtube for videos to refresh myself on the finer points of photographing vast landscapes, and the tips & tricks for shooting in Yosemite in particular. Shooting landscapes is not something I've had a ton of experience with, so I was pleased as punch to find your videos! Yesterday I secured our reservation for Yosemite for next week, and we are really looking forward to going. We'll have only one day in Yosemite, and one day in Sequoia/King's Canyon. After watching your videos, I feel like I'm more prepared to capture the beauty of the parks with my camera. I use a Nikon D3100. Thank you for your channel, and I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Thank you Mark for sharing your camera & picture-taking knowledge during your vacation with the general public. Truly enjoyed it. Just got back from Yosemite w/my twin brother, but the control fires & terrible smoke in the valley and lots of detour traffic and delays caused additional heartache in my attempt to take pictures from the valley. We did tackle the 4-mile hike, which took us above the smoke line thus had a better chance of better views except this hike took more than 10 hours (5 hours up from the valley to Glacier Point and then 5 hours back down...we were dead tired, but was worth it). - twin dragon 🤓🏞🎶🌎🏓☀️👍

Great on location video Mark! I could feel your excitement as the light began to highlight the subjects. I would have to say my favorite focal length for landscape is 24mm for getting foreground and background in comps with minimal distortion. However it’s nice to get some detail shots with telephoto. Was gonna say those wild flowers are lupine however someone beat me to it. Hope you and your family had an epic time in the park. Cloudless days are a problem here on west coast during the summer months. Keep on keeping on, getting out there and shooting.

You bumped into what tends to happen in the summer in the mountains out here in the west, which is - perfectly clear mornings, and you always seem to be in a valley where the sun clears the nearest ridge a couple of hours after sunrise. Nice for hiking, not so good for photography.

I do everything in my power to avoid Yosemite in the Summer (late May - early September). Tioga Road is often still closed in early/mid June due to snow accumulation in the high country and that traps the many thousands of visitors in the Valley (beautiful as the Valley is), making it way too busy and crowded to truly enjoy. I was surprised to see how many vacant spaces were available at the Bridalveil Fall parking area. Even if an image doesn't turn out the way you would like, it is still quite a beautiful experience watching the sunrise and the way it lights the surrounding granite walls and peaks. Better to be there and not succeed than to not have been there... Hope you and the family had an enjoyable time.

I am a new subscriber to your channel. Really like your no drama videos, technical explanations and very relatable videos. I came upon your channel when I was looking for videos on how many photographers use AEB/HDR vs ND split/graduated when photographing very harsh lighting conditions. I have been using AEB exclusively since 2017 and I like the none HDR look from the new apps available now. I was not a fan of the overly processed look of the early days of HDR. Your bracketing video was very spot on and glad you have positive say regarding AEB. Anyway I am from California and if you ever go back to Yosemite, try to make it to the Eastern Sierras in the fall. The HWY 395 area between Bishop and Lee Vining has some amazing displays of aspen colors and offers a more colorful vistas than Yosemite in October with less crowds. Good luck and keep up the good work.

SSSSHHHHHH.... recommendations = more visitors. Yosemite is crowded, the number of tripods is growing exponentially. Mid-June/July are not the best months with blue or grey sky, . For Yosemite I am typically hiking with a 24-70. The park is in my backyard, it never gets old.

I really like your "on location" videos, feeling like I am in the Yosemite Valley and listening to your thought process while you compose and shoot images. FYI: the flowers are Lupine, very common in mountains on the west coast.

Great video, always fun to see more than just the finished shot. Hope you had a nice vacation, me personally I'm soon ready for my 6 week vacation (summer vacation really, because Swedes all take their vacation in the summer). And I'm looking to go out and get more involved with my photography, specifically the landscape part. Still have not decided on whether to get the Samyang 14mm or Samyang 20mm. Time will tell. :)

Great video, Mark. And about the missing Audio - That can happen to all of us, don't worry. My lens lineup is currently a 18-135 and a 70-300 on APS-C. Though those zoom lenses might not be the sharpest, I prefer them over carrying a bunch of primes. I might get a 10mm 2.8 prime though - but it has no thread for filters, unlike a 10-20 zoom lens...

Thanks for the wonderful video Mark! I always learn so much watching all of your content whether it is a tips video or an on location video. One question, when in a wildlife setting like Yosemite what precautions do you take to avoid interactions with wildlife? That is one of the things I am always concerned about when I am on a remote shoot by myself.
@MarkDenneyPhoto
@MarkDenneyPhoto 5 лет назад
Thanks so much Christal! That's something that's always on my mind, the only real precaution I take is to not carry open food and bring a trusty can of bear spray.

Also, if at all possible, go with a friend (cuz it’s great having someone watching your back, having company), and in case you trip and hurt yourself, someone to aid you, plus better 2 vs. 1 bear, just in case you run into one. - twin dragon 🤓🏞🎶🌎☀️👍

I've been using a 10-18mm zoom on an SL1, so that's roughly equivalent to 16-29 on a full frame. I recently picked up a used 5d mkII and am looking forward to trying out the 17mm prime I bought to go with it. FYI, those lavender flowers are called lupine.
@MarkDenneyPhoto
@MarkDenneyPhoto 5 лет назад
I figured that's what they were as I saw them all around the Golden Gate Bridge not too long ago, but wasn't sure - all I knew was that the color of them was lavender:)

Thank you for sharing your experience. Landscape photography has been my hobby for 50 years! I will be visiting Yosemite this summer as a part of a family vacation. I have a new Nikon Z7II, but only the kit 24-70 lens. I have a 70-200 mm, but it doesn't play nice with the mirrorless camera, even with the z-mount converter. A Z-mount 100-400 is not in my budget at this time. Will I be able to get decent shots with the 24-70? I really don't want to take my D-850, which works with the 70-200, because the combo is so darn heavy for this now senior citizen!

Mark, the first scene when you’re shooting the sunrise. What did your settings look like? I can’t imagine having aperture at 11 or 16 and still being able to capture enough light with high ISO values.

For me it is always 18mm 😅 on a crop sensor, so that means something like 27 mm and a lot of times I feel that this don't cover my feeling and at the end I take a panorama 😂 And yeah, amazing video like always

Great post, Mark. On site considerations were most welcome and instructive. Logistics question - e.g., at parking lot, does the park have open/close or other time restrictions (e.g., arrival, departure, how long you can stay at a venue)? With this trip behind you, do you feel the tug of an upgrade to A7R3 with its 2 card slots😁?

Hi Mark, Thanks for the video. Just curious if you took any photos of the mountains in portfolio if you would share. Also, what lens 100-400 were you using? I am considering purchasing a lighter but quality version of the same zoom. range. I currently have the Tamron 70-200 which is fantastic but for me it is a beast to take around, hand hold if needed and no fun to travel with or lug on a hike. Its heavy.

I have a Canon aps-c. I typically shoot landscape at f11. My images are usually soft. Someone suggested that on aps-c you should multiply the f number by the crop factor. 11×1.6 is the equivalent to roughly f18 on a full frame, and that's y my images are soft. Is this true?
