In this week’s episode, we discuss landscape photography with Peter McKinnon's new Everyday Camera Backpack. When Peter McKinnon announced his first camera bag last year with Nomatic I was intrigued, but when I eventually got my hands on one I was a bit underwhelmed as I thought is was a gigantic pack that was fairly overpriced, but when I received a copy of Pete's new Everyday Camera Backpack - well this is more inline with something that I would use for my own landscape photography.
In this video, I'll review the things I really like with this new camera backpack along with the things that I wish were a bit different. Now this pack isn't specifically designed for landscape and adventure photography, but it does fill a void so to speak within my own camera bag lineup. I don't want to give away all the details on the bag just yet, but I think you'll find that it's well priced and thoughtfully designed for most photographers. If you'd like additional information on the Everyday Camera Bag, below is a link that'll tell ya everything you want to know! Thanks for watching! - Mark

Just like manual razer blade shavers, there's a new camera bag released for sale almost every other day. They all claim to come with new and improved features that we all must have. Five bags later, I'm still shopping for the ultimate bag that I already know will never exist.

I love Peter, I think he's a great RU-vidr, but literally anything he puts his name on gets a price hike to at least $300, whether it's worth it or not. I get that photography is expensive, but c'mon. $400 for a bag, $900 for a set of filters, $600 for a tripod, etc.

tends to happen when you release gear that's never been made or realized on the market until you got your hands on it. "Whether it's worth it or not"... doesn't mean anything. lol My photography might not be worth $500/session for you... I'm still gonna charge that and get it. lol It's worth what people will pay, and he just got $1mil on KS for this project. :D

I am amazed to see so many people pushing this bag. It certainly has a couple of clever, nice features, but that does not make up for what to me are missing essentials. Perhaps, it just needs a new name. I equate "everyday" with "all-purpose" and this would not fit the bill for most of my needs as a full frame photographer. Lack of a waist belt to shift load to my hips is a deal killer - period. (An all purpose, "everyday" bag might be best equipped with a removable waist belt, but a bag of this size can still be quite heavy. Unless this is just for moving gear from car to a nearby spot, my back would never forgive me for going with a stylish pack over a practical one.) Lack of adequate provision for carrying a sturdy tripod just digs the hole deeper. (Jury rigging straps is not an attractive option and might cut down on water carrying capacity by having to give up a water bottle pocket.) The bag also needs provision for a water bladder -- whether walking around a city or hiking in the woods, it is just so nice to be able to sip water at will, rather than having to take the pack off to take a drink (or struggle with reaching around to the side pocket to repeatedly take our or put back the water bottle). It doesn't look like my 150-600 mm would fit in this without leaving the nifty little camera units at home. So, it would either limit me to 200mm or require me to forego one of the features that sets the bag apart. I can appreciate that some people might find this a good solution for specific photo outings. However, if I don't need the features mentioned above, it generally means that I am not on a photography trip and just want to have my camera with minimal additional gear with me. In that case, this is too much bag. I just take something smaller (and squashable) that can fit inside my airline carry-on along with a body, a couple of lenses, minipod and a flash. This may be an ok bag, but is getting touted out of proportion to the apparent value proposition -- and why so much PR before the final version of the bag has been created?

As a landscape photographer, when you unzipped the back at the start and the straps folded back with the back that was the issue for me. I love backpacks where you unzip it and the straps remain as often if I’m at a wet location then the straps don’t get wet when I open then and you can hold the back up a little so it doesn’t touch either. Also I love side access. Nice bag though but yeah definitely not for landscape photographers.

Haha, zipper pulls are important. Especially non-metal ones. I have a feeling there are more zipper pull snobs out there that we realize. Really dig the inside being lined w the loop material. My range bags have that as well. I use tactigami holsters and straps, and really, really dig it. You could easily adapt that here. Regardless, thank you for the review. Pete does a pretty good job on his stuff, it just takes a little longer to save up for 😁

Good review thanks Mark. Two problems I see. 1. With laptop in place the back of the pack would be rigid and not so comfortable on the back. 2. Straps of the bag are on the opening flap. When on your back all the weight of the bag seems to be taken on the zipper.

Unless you adjust the straps (shorten them) and even then it will pull on the straps in an odd way. Other than that I like the bag. But like most photography gear out of my price range.

That bag looks awesome. I found mine also on Kickstarter and I recommend people who think many bags are to expensive to keep an eye on Kickstarter. I had been looking for a while because there are new ones quite often on Kickstarter but there was always something wrong with them and suddenly there it was, just the one I was looking for AND to the right price. I thought I would miss straps for the hip which this seems to miss as well but I find it is no problem.

Thanks, Mark! You just saved me money and heartache. I came across this video while searching for a landscape backpack for the upcoming trip to Iceland. I was about to pull the trigger on the production model of this vary bag when you've brought key points to my attention that make it unsuitable for a "full blown landscape trip". Truth is, I've always resisted carrying a backpack because I don't like the idea of having to take it off and laying it down in messy and precarious places just to change a lens. I've always used a Peak Design Everyday Messenger bag, but that's not going to work for Iceland. So, what bag would you recommend for me on that trip for carrying a Nikon Z7 mirrorless with the holy trinity of F2.8 lenses: 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200, and of course my MacBook Pro, filters, etc (no drone)? I really need some advice here from a "serious bag geek"! :D

Nice review Mark, thanks. Given the elevated marketing I expected much more from the bag. The missing side handle is a show stopper for me. They goof around with exotic dividers and no side handle. Side handles are important, but require more design work. Like yourself I have many bags, I’m not seeing any compelling features on this one.

I was worried about the outside of the bag being able to go through a 3 to 6 day hike/camping and still looking good and the room for my cooking utensils, water, hammock, and change of clothes etc. plus my full photo gear. Then when I added up all the equation, it just didn’t seem like it would work. But it is a nice looking bag.

So is it just branded by him or was he directly involved in the design process. The reason I ask is because I own a Mountainsmith Tanuk 40 that was supposed to be designed by Chris Bruckard, and I gotta say, it’s not a very photographer friendly pack with an extremely high empty weight and limited gear stowage options. The point I’m laboriously getting to is that many of these packs seem to be branded, not designed by professional photographers.

Not wild about the logo -- how about an aspen leaf -- but it's a fine minimalist-looking pack with some good features. I wish the side magnetic flaps were reversed so they would open in the opposite direction -- that way they wouldn't potentially snag/open/rip on tree branches as you walk through a forest. I'm not enamored of the straps. I'm can't tell how much of a cushion they provide but any loaded pack over distance needs good padding in the straps. Also, I'm not keen on the straps being attached to the back panel as I think that may be an unnecessary stress point on the unit as a whole over time. I would prefer if the panel open to the side rather than out and rest wholly on the ground like a F-Stop or my Tamarc. Am I talking myself into a Shimoda? Might be nice to have an exterior back panel mesh to hold an analog map or snack or sunglasses. Glad they're adding some more interior mesh panels. Good thoughtful review!

Mark, This bag looks like a strange hybrid that doesn't really fit any real requirement. When you go out, you take also the crop to shoot the video, and a tripod for that, so you need at least space for an extra body. I also didn't see space for a filter set/holder, nor a drone.. On the other hand, I didn't see how at least the camera would be readily accessible without opening the entire bag - something like many of the other camera bags have. For the price they ask for this bag - no way.

I understand that this is a commercial. But this backpack is too overpriced, and not worth the money, Lowepro Freeline BP350 AW is almost half the price but with more features, the material is almost the same.

I’m still looking for the perfect bag. I’ve found some that are good for air travel but not good for driving around and one good for driving around but not air travel and none that are good for air, driving and hiking. I shoot mostly wildlife so need something that can hold 600/4 and 100-500 and two bodies. I wish they would design a bag that used the molle system also, you could then customize it so much better for individual use. And please stop making bags only in black, I won’t even look at a black bag.

Is this McKinnon character a pirate? Looks like a 150-600 has no chance? Just picked one up for wildlife.

It is still expensive. The only advantage that it has is its containers.

Why didn't you do a video on the the earlier Peter McKinnon bag? Just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean you shouldn't make a video on it. I'd bet you could have saved a fair amount of ppl some heart ache. Especially with the hype behind it..

Sorry, cant buy into this for Landscape photography. No waist strap or rain cover and doesnt seem suitable for regular tripod. The ladder system seems a rip off of the Atlas origami system which for the price seems a far better and flexible option for the landscape photographer.

Lucky you don't carry a tonne of gear in that bag... You'll soon regret carrying more without a waist strap 😬

All good things are expensive and it's not THAT good. Doesn't justify its price...IMO.
