thanks so very mutch for this video. I ordered this tool based on your video. I actually own a wetstone but find it difficult to get a nice edge with that. this thing is nice and simple yet highly functional and doesnt take mutch space in my toolbox! Im no knife sharpening expert but this is a nice and easy way to get a usable edge !

I’ve got one from outdoor edge.. it’s just the carbide and ceramic V’s but it’s got a little fold out support on the bottom so you can plant it on a table which makes it much easier to run the knife through straight. It’s set at 22deg. Normally I prefer to use my worksharp guided setup but I keep the pocket sharpener in a jacket pocket to touch things up.. I’ve also run a bunch of friends and coworkers knives through it. I also usually sharpen my edc knife to 20 deg with a 22 deg microbevel to make it that much more effective if needed. I agree.. the carbide side is the gate to hell.. I can’t imagine running a crk or spyderco through it lol.. the ceramic is a nice touch up tool tho. I’ve run some garbage knives through it honestly trying to get good results but it’s never pretty.. and the results edge is way too messed up for the ceramic to do any meaningful cleanup. I’ve even tried to sharpen a license plate with it lol. One thing.. I’m not sure that flipping it around does much. Yes the ride are at the other side of the blade, but that’s not gonna do much to reverse any bias your introducing.

I got one about a month ago. I'm a blade newb, so this is really nice. I got it for around $11 (U.S.)! Really good deal. Amazing, really. I might just get another. :) I do plan on likely buying a Morakniv soon. I see their grind is different than what this sharpener would be used for. So I plan on getting a Whetstone in the future as well. For now, I use this on my cheapo multitool (BIBURY 21 in 1). Works nicely. I've not used it on my Victorinox RangerGrip 58 yet. Have not used it to need sharpening to begin with. I might buy the portable Victorinox blade sharpener for that RangerGrip, just to be safe. It's only around $13 (U.S.) right now.

3yrs ago when i was bored at my base id find things to sharpen with this. one time i sharpened my coat button. one morning during inspection the sergeant observed my coat and complimented how clean it was. he wanted to show everyone and gripped the button on his thumb then a river of blood ran down his hand. never seen a scary and big man scream like a girl.

I was thinking about getting one of these. Could you also use this on kitchen knifes?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 2 года назад
Yes, they could be used for that, but I wouldn't recommend it. Kitchen knives usually are made at 15° or less per side.

Jake, I don't own a Medic but you might try putting a magnet to the side of yours. I'm guessing the sides of the tool are made of aluminum. Maybe you meant to say "all metal construction" instead of "all steel construction".

Thanks for catching that Joe, you are absolutely correct. Now I have to find the time in the review that I said that so I can put in a correction. I appreciate the help in double checking my work.

Very nice. Take you time with it and it will be a very useful tool for you. Biggest mistake most people make is to use too much pressure and slide the blade too quickly (very slow is also a problem, but not as bad as too fast).

I am new to knives and have a few Sanrenmu knives but they are starting to lose their edge. I have tried sharpening with bottom of a ceramic mug but that only does so much. Do you know of something that is a good budget knife sharpener? I have seen one on amazon called the Smiths SK2 but I don't know. I would like something to that affect.(not like the one in the video) I do not use my knives that heavily but I just would like something to sharpen them every once in a while. Or would just one type of stone be enough? Also most, if not all, are under 3 inch blade lengh
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 6 лет назад
A guy new to knives shouldn't start with a ceramic mug. It can work but you first need to have the sharpening skills of using a whetstone if you want to be good at it with a mug. Check out all of my Lansky videos. The Smiths SK2 is a whetstone method - and that is a good method to learn. You should look up several "how to sharpen a knife with a whetstone" videos and learn from those if you want to use that method. Some simpler methods to master are the alternatives that Lansky has. The Turn Box is easy to use and does not cost very much: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xeBIOR13dRw.html You can also use the classic Lansky system amzn.to/2hK7nP6 - that is the one that I own. I don't have a video on how to use it, you can search for "how to sharpen with the Lansky sharpening system" and you will find many videos. A classic mistake that new knife enthusiasts make is that they try to go too cheap with sharpeners. They want to spend their money only on knives, but that is a HUGE mistake because you will soon end up with a bunch of dull knives. Frustrated that you can't sharpen them well and then you will quit the hobby. Instead, spend a little extra on a decent sharpening system (it can easily be less than $100). Think of it this way. Say you buy a $70 sharpener and you have 10 knives. You have only added $7 per knife to maintain them for MANY MANY years. If you have 20 knives then you have only added $3.50 per knife to keep that nice knife sharp. Whetstone sharpening is a GREAT skill to have. It is harder for most of us to master than the folks who make the teaching videos tend to suggest, but once you are good at it then it is a GREAT skill to have. I am not very good at whetstone sharpening, so I use jigs to sharpen. I started with the Lansky deluxe system, and then also the Lansky Turn Box and I still use them, they are great choices for years to come because they work and they are very portable too. I have a full size sharpener (I am working on the video for it today actually) and it is AWESOME, but it is not portable at all.
@PockieEtc
@PockieEtc 6 лет назад
Thanks a lot! I will look into the classic lansky system. I am more on the budget side of knives so this will do for me. Again, I appreciate it thanks. Also, will this work with a chiseled grind like the sanrenmu 604?

I prefer the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener, but that takes up a little bit more room, weight and takes a bit more practice to use properly. Lansky is certainly not a bad choice.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 8 лет назад
That would make sense coming from you. Bushcrafter type guys, I have found, are more likely to use a flat stone to sharpen their knives in a more manual fashion. It takes more skill, but I think that once you have the skill that you can probably get a better edge on your Work Sharp than with the BladeMedic. I just don't see the Work Sharp as a portable sharpener that the average knife guy will be able to use well. After 30+ years of using wetstones to sharpen my woodworking chisels and other wood working tools I still can't do a great job on it for folding knives. Perhaps I was projecting my lack of skill onto the average knife guy?
@ArikGST
@ArikGST 8 лет назад
Canadian Cutting Edge I think for the normal guy that just carries a knife for work or something, this Lansky will certainly do the job. I don`t like the carbide sharpeners because they take off quiet a bit of material and should only be used on really damaged blades, but otherwise, you can certainly keep your knives sharp with a Lansky BladeMedic, and it`s only half the price of the Work Sharp. For me, the Work Sharp works great cause I can use it for all my knives, but I got over a 1,5 years of nearly daily use on that thing, so I guess I pack the necessary skill for it. If you ever got the chance you should check it out, but I am certainly not giving anyone crap for using a Lansky, whatever works man.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 8 лет назад
Yeah, that is why I tried hard to impress on folks in the review that they should not use the carbide sharpener part, unless the blade is totally screwed. In that case they may be best off getting a professional knife sharpener (person) to sharpen the knife. I think I will add that last part as a notation on the video. "Carbide kills blades!" All together now, "Carbide kills blades!"

I just bought one of these and just got done using it and to be honest I am not too satisfied. It did sharpen the knives however not too sharp they wont slice paper. Am I expecting too much from this kind of sharpener? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 2 года назад
It's best for maintenance in the field, after you've got a good edge on it. It also is a learned skill, not everyone does it correctly at first. It takes a lot of experimentation to figure out this thing. The biggest important thing that I didn't stress enough in this video is that you can't let a knife get really dull before using something like this. The ceramic is good for tuning up an edge, maintaining sharpness, moreso than sharpening from dull. I have used mine to sharpen fully dull knives but it takes quite a bit of time. It can be done though it isn't fast at at that. It's a pocket tool for a quick tune-up.

@@CanadianCuttingEdge thank you so much man really appreciate the tutelage Yeah think I def need more practice. I wanna get a more comprehensive sharpening set. Trying to figure out which own kinda thinking the Lansky kit or a whetstone. I really would like to become proficient with a whetstone think that's a great skill to have.

I got a Kabar BK2. For a novice sharpener, like myself, will this be good for that knife?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 4 года назад
I think it should work well for your BK2, but I do suggest if you have several knives to get a sharpening system that is more substantial, or every once in a while get your BK2 sharpened by a professional, because while something like the Blade Medic can work, it takes some time. I hope you also have a knife you don't like and practice sharpening that one before you use the blademedic on your Ka-Bar. It takes time, and steel worn down, to learn to use any sharpener well.
