Recently Dr. Hisao Ishigaki and Daniel Galhardo went on a trip to the wild northern Japanese island of Hokkaido to hook up with larger trout using tenkara. While most people envision Japanese streams and rivers having only small trout, that's not the case where trout are allowed to grow.
This is one of several fish about 20" (50cm) or larger that were caught on the trip. The video shows the tenkara casting as well as the pulsating technique used to entice the large rainbow trout using a kebari (tenkara fly). The large fish had a lot of room to run, making the fight with a fixed-line challenging but quick and we were lucky to capture the entirety of the fight. Dr. Ishigaki had to hold his ground and bring the fish to hand quickly.
