My Aunt & Uncle lived & ran the tourist/gift shop in the 60's I treasure the post cards they sent with stories of what they did & people they met while being the care takers of the Crater!

We were there in June of 1973 and loved it! At that time you could hike to the bottom.

Heck yes it's worth the visit! So's the mountains near Flag, along with the lava fields. Highway sounds out there? The sound of freedom moving. They really have fixed the place up since I was last there in the early 2000's...

I went to the crater in the late 60's but the admission fee was too steep so I left and satisfied my curiosity with pictures.

Sure, it's worth the visit. Breathtaking, indeed. A meteor 50,000 yrs. ago, 150 ft. across hit what is now Arizona with an impact like 100 tons of TNT, blowing out a crater a MILE ACROSS and 500 ft. deep? Heck, yeah. THE MUSEUM at the crater is sure worth the visit too. Pictures are deceiving, its hard to fathom the size. Thanks for the visit!

Get your figures right. The vertical impact energy was estimated to be equivalent to 4.5 to 5 megatons of TNT; est. weight of the meteor, 180,000 tons; est. speed 15 km/s; est. crater depth on impact 86 meters.

Marvelous video, Russ ! Meteor Crater is a must-see landmark in the Western United States. Imagine the tremendous explosion when the meteor hit the ground ! Back in 2003 when my wife and I were traveling and working seasonal jobs we worked a winter at the rv park. I was lucky enough to get too tour all the way around the rim of the crater it was cool to be able to see the crater all the way around.

WOW ! You always have great videos, but this one , WOW. Im 64 y.o and 3 places I wanted to see my whole life was the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater and Dole pineapple fields in Hawaii. I have been to Dole and this fall/winter I hope to be out west. Thank you for yet ANOTHER great video.

Thanks for the visit. Last time I was there was in 1967. I drove across the country from CT to CA and back on 80W and 40/66E. Took the short detour over to see it. Wow, one serious hole. No buildings around except an older Airstream for the rangers that worked there. Drove right up to the edge and started lookin and walkin around, hiked/climbed down to the center. It really is neat. I think the science center is a good idea 'cause most folks don't know anything about it or the planets or space or universe, so they get a little education while there. It's amazing how much things changed in 55 yrs. P.S. I liked and subbed to your channel; very well done. Here's to 100K.

I like visiting the crater but I've only been maybe 6 times , the first time I saw it was back in the late 60's when I was about 10 years old . Still like to see it now !

You do it right Russ. Get there when it opens before the crowds. I’ve been there three times, late 50s, 70s and ‘06 and it was packed each time. Very well done my friend.

We went to Vegas, jumped in our rental car and drove east to petrified forest and hit most of the sites on the way back. Painted desert, meteor, grand canyon. Then we hit the sites just outside Vegas, Red Rock canyon, Valley of Fire, etc. By the time we turned our car in we put on 1599 miles. Then we spent 2 hours in Vegas and flew back home. We had a very nice trip. Love the videos.

🙋‍♀️Hello Russ! Do you know where the nearest McDonalds is? 🤣🤣 Made my day! I liked seeing the Meteor Crater. Enjoyed visiting the museum too. I couldn't imagine the impact that would have been felt by the Farmer & his Wife. One Summer day, we heard the oddest sound. My Sister & I came out of our homes with our children looking out from behind us. We couldn't believe what we saw. The barn that Grandpaul built, collapsed. Just like that. No wind. Just was tired of standing I guess. Oddest thing.

You are right about it being open and flat where you can see for miles. Maybe that is why they landed the meteor here. Made sure they did not knock down anyone's home. We stayed there in May 2022 on our Route 66 trip. The person in the RV park confirmed that the dirt exit road (south) is original Route 66, as is the stretch across the road that leads to the old crater welcome center. Nice park. The fires near Flagstaff closed our originally planned campground and we ended up at Meteor Crater.

In thee 80s I took my 8 year old niece here. I watched a movie that showed that 300 million TONS of rock was instantly vaporized. Which gave me an idea. With so much molten rock raining down like raindrops, I was bound to find some evidence of it. I stopped along that 5 mile road connecting to I-40. I drove down a few hundred feet and pulled over and looked. We found a LOT of little melted looking small pieces, like drops.

It all washed away with the water that came up out of the deep. That is not from a meteor its from the waters below. A lot like a sinkhole.

Really Cool, Russ. Nothing better than a Big Hole in the Earth. But really, I absolutely Love Natural Events, History and the Great Southwest. Thanks for the tour. Haven't been since the upgrades which are nice, but truly wish to be able to hike down in. A Brewpub 🍺 at the bottom could be sweet, with a Tram 🚡 to bring the Tipsy back up. 🥴 Maybe hold Rock Concerts down there, what a Fabulous Echo that would be??? Oh Yes. 👊👍

I was driving truck with my older brother while in college during summer and I-40 wasn't completed there yet. I asked if we could go see it since we had several days before we had to be back in CA and he said yes against his better judgement, but said if we can't turn around I can back it up to the highway. Luckily back then there was plenty of space to turn around from when there was mining. We turned around before going to see the crater. My brother enjoyed it and he bought a meteorite too in the little gift shop. I don't remember how much it was because my brother paid and didn't complain about it, so it couldn't have been a $25 equivalent.

I was there in the 70s. It sure has changed. None of that was there We walked down into the crater You can't imagine the size until you look up. None of the things you've shown was there then. Wow, 👌 wish I could come back. To old now. Lucky you.

I always wanted to visit but my parents said it was a tourist trap and did not stop there on our two vacations in that area when I was a child. I think as an adult, although I have been past a lot of times, I have not stopped. You have changed my mind. Will likely go and visit next time in that vicinity. Thanks Russ!

Your parents weren't wrong but it's a trap worth getting caught in! Expensive I guess for a family on the bang per buck scale. If you go wear good shoes and take the rim tour, if it's still going. They didn't allow open sandals when we visited.

Visited this when I was a kid. You could actually stand on the side of the crater back then and walk a bit down into the crater. However, the owner must have decided that people should pay to see the crater, so created a museum. Last I read, the meteor did not actually strike the earth. Rather, it blew up just before it hit and the crater is just a result of the explosive force. Great place for families to take their kids for science education.

Wow, quite a bit different than when I was here as a teen in 1964! But the crater still looks virtually the same as far as I remember. Kudos to the Barringer family for their stewardship of this feature and the facilities they have built. You could put up signs that said state or national park and they wouldn't have to change a thing!

Part of the meteor is on display at the Grand Canyon south rim in a shop.... can't remember exactly, been 30 years. It's about a 4 foot oval. Try and find that!!!

Yes! Go and enjoy. Take some quiet alone time to think of the meteorite’s journey. And take in the view from the platform installed near the visitor center.

All the displays are great, now. In the early ‘60s there was only a small building and a walk along the perimeter. No fences. You could jus pick your way to the bottom. It really looks deep when you are looking from the bottom up.

Now, if that cow answered you that would have made your morning. Wow, that Meteor Crater was definitely worth the trip. Yes, we need a meteor or astride deflector. If we take a hit now, it may be several hundred years before the sun came out again. Yes, I know it's hot in Quartzsite, 114 degrees. Stay cool Russ; I enjoyed your cool site.

When you look at the size of the crater, it is amazing to think that if it was just slightly off that impact area it would have totally destroyed the visitor's center. Bit of luck there!
