⚡Eye Health Question of the Day: Did this content sway you more in favor or LASIK or did it push you away from LASIK?

Hello. Great video. Very informative. I'm on quetiapine and it can effect eyesight. Also venlafaxine which can cause some blurryness. I'm wondering if I would be a good candidate for lasik? Or any other procedure like PRK. My diopter is -8.50.

I feel like an implantable contact lens would be safer because if anything ever goes wrong, doctors can remove the lens. Unlike LASIK which is a permanent modification to the eye

What’s your opinion on icl vs lasik? I saw a doctor for lasik she made it seem I was going to have 20/20 for a while. My prescription is -10 -9. She said I was a candidate for lasik because my cornea was thick. I have dry eyes because of I am on the computer. Would icl be better?

Painfully dry eyes, feeling like someone is stabbing your eyes constantly, starbursts, halos, double or triple vision, having your nerves severed on your eye that may never grow back and leave you in pain, the list goes on and on All for you to end up in glasses again at old age (best case scenario!!) It is not worth risking it on an elective eye surgery. Do not pay someone to possibly ruin your eyes forever. Keep your glasses or wear contacts like this doctor. When I went to get my Lasik evaluation I noticed many people working there wore glasses, why? They see the bad side far more often than reported. They know it’s not worth the risk.

This is the first hour long video that I watched on RU-vid that is not a movie or some other entertainment video. Someone close to me underwent a femtosecond lasik procedure where she had a lens implanted into her eye yesterday. I landed here because I always thought that lasik as a procedure that corrects the natural vision and doesn’t require an implant. The depth of information you covered in this video is something what the world needs. After that I binge watched many of your videos. I feel like I am already an ophthalmologist now lol! To answer your question, I feel pretty confident about getting this kind of surgery after watching your videos, but… only with a doctor such as you. Thanks and keep up the good work doctor.

I had LASIK surgery in 2000. It was the best thing that happened to me. I had a -11.00 and astigmatism on both eyes. I was essentially legally blind without my eyeglasses and contact lenses. I wore glasses since second grade and contact lenses when I was in high school. When I first considered LASIK it was fairly new procedure. The key things I think of is for a good result for LASIK surgery is getting a good eye surgeon who has done a lot of surgeries and the follow up. After the surgery, I was given a set of eye drops to apply everyday and for a few months after I went to the eye surgeon where he check out my eyes make sure everything healed correctly. I had perfect 20/20 vision for 20 years. I am now back to eye glasses/contact lenses but it was a great run and the surgery changed my life.

I got LASIK Dec 18. Worst decision of my life, my vision is 20/20 but not as accurate as with my glasses before, which I notice all day, every day. Imagine, having glasses that are about 1 diopter the wrong prescription, all the time (which isn't correctable by glasses!) I also got masses of floaters/dots/general change to the viscosity of my eye, which is horrible and incurable; from the pressure of the suction device. Terrible low light vision, everyone is blurry and I struggle with driving. Starbursts, halos etc. Last but not least, I think I have been given a surgically induced irregular astigmatism (not correctable with glasses) and see 2 of most light sources, including white text on a dark background. Do not get LASIK, what I wouldn't give to go back in time and stop myself from laying down on that table ☹️

Aside from paying for contacts if you use them, why do people go get new prescriptions so often? I went 5 years on a single pair of glasses, went for a new prescription and one eye got worse by -0.25. All i know is without glasses im blind as a bat and with them i can see what i need to see just fine so why change it. Considering lasik myself since my situation is very stable with about -3 in each eye.

Hi Doc... I really want to see far again, I don't mind wearing glasses to read or play piano or to drive. I am in favour of Lasik... what I do not understand is: for driving purposes you adjust eyesight so that road signs at a certain distance will be clear. I want to see far again as far as possible... like mountains and birds and stars (not blurring). Would Lasik be able to help me with this hearts desire. I also don't mind wearing glasses when I drive... Would Lasik help me? I kind of get depressed cause even with glasses and contact lenses nothing is crystal clear like mountains. Cause eye sight is adjusted for road signs. It's actually is a shame. Take care Doc... keep up the good work!

Although I personally think everyone should stay away from LAISK because it is hard to tell what the future holds once the cornea is thinned from the surgery, I do appreciate how honest you are and that you explain the facts. The problem with LAISK only having a 1% complication rate is that if it happens to someone it 100% effects their life and not all of the problems are easily solved.

Contact lenses can also cause major damage. I have been wearing them for twelve years and told recently to go for lasik, because they have done major damage to my eyes including the growth of blood vessels! Of course glasses are the safest alternative of all. But they aren’t really an option for me all the time, as I have a high prescription, I’m very physically active, and I work in a field that I could be in danger if glasses are knocked off my face (I’m a mental health nurse )

I believe that it was the FDA warning I read, which stated that Lasik surgery is not good for people 40 years old and old. Sadly, no 2 people have the same outcome with lasik. My 93 year old mother, who was lied to that lasik alone, can save her eyes, now Hallucinates. Another female I know has to wear shades all day long, even in her home. She can no longer drive, and it has interfered with mental health also. I also see many people who wear shades even at night because lasik has caused their eyes to hate from all light. What's about the people it caused to hallucinate, and as a result, they committed suicide. We must always research everything, including medications, before using them, since most people die from medication poisoning and not the illness itself. FYI: After researching a relatives medication, I found out that no 2 of them should be taken together. Plus, there are many adverse side effects.

I don't think Lasik is safe because of all the complications that people have developed. Corneal Ecstasia, Corneal Neuralgia. These are risks I was never warned about when I had my initial evaluation. After seeing documentaries online and doing my own research I am glad I never got it done. I emailed several Lasik Centers asking if they tell their patients about those risks and I never got a response from any of them. So what does that tell you? And if Lasik is so wonderful why do so many eye doctors wear glasses and contacts? That too should tell you something

After Lasyk I was able to see clearly for three years and then my vision deteriorated a bit. So I'm back to wearing glasses (not as strong as pre surgery) but sucks. I can't wear contacts as before surgery because I have a hard time keeping my eyelids open to put them in. 😞 But I'll say this though. What was awesome about the procedure was that I could notice my vision around the laser's light (periphery) improving with every firing of it.

Good content as always. LASIK never really appealed to me simply because I never found contacts/glasses that inconvenient. That and the knowledge that I will still have to deal with presbyopia and cataract surgery later down the line anyway really keeps the temptation at bay. Perhaps the most compelling argument to me is the financial one, but even that doesn't really apply to me as I don't have to pay for my contacts at present either.

It's sad that people are getting tricked into having this unnecessary procedure done. They aren't told that the surgery permanently weakens your cornea's structural integrity which leaves you vulnerable to mild to severe complications many years later.

If you have thick enough corneas that will allow 300 microns to be left, you'll be fine. The issue is when the cornea is thinner and/or you have a high prescription that renders you closer to the 250 microns mark. This can lead to keratoconus.

Metheorologist from Detroit had a rare complication. I can't recall what it's called, but basically it's when the nerves start to heal they form knots and eyes become ultra sensitive to normal things. So she was in excruciating pain 24/7. There are other cases too. One of them was a man from Canada, who also committed suicide. His parents found boxes of research, different contacts and records from doctors' appointments. He was looking for a cure for 20 years. I considered Lasik, but this really scares me.

It is true that people have experienced tragic cases. But that is true about almost any surgery. The tough part is that LASIK is an elective procedure and our eyes/vision is very precious. But when you study the statistics, the lasik procedure is incredibly successful and arguably one of the most efficient and successful surgeries ever invented.

I was hopeful about getting rid of glasses and contacts so I can have a better life and participate more in sports, but when I did my research I think the risk is too high. I can see without glasses enough to not bump into objects and with glasses/contacts my eyesight is ok. My life is managable. With LASIK I could have a nice improvement but I also risk getting way more troubles that will affect me till I die. If I had really bad eyesight, like having trouble to come back home if I lost my glasses, then I think I would get LASIK. I think its great that this treatment can bring eyesight to ppl who practically lost it, but for those who manage betwenn ok and good like me, its takeing a gamble with your health. I'm pissed it is advertised as a "practically risk free" - you have to scrub through some thick layer of paid BS to get any information that is at least a bit less biased.

Thank you for being honest. I didn't get it in the early 2000s due to lack of funds and was considering it this month due to some issues that may be related to my contacts, and after much investigation will never get this surgery and have realized this is a cosmetic surgery that induces real damage to an integral organ no matter how "successful" it is. I've found alot of horrible information regarding it and cannot believe any reputable doctor would promote cutting open and scarring a completely healthy cornea. The people defending it don't realize it is a cosmetic surgery with serious structural integrity trade off with arguably one of the most complex and irreplaceable organs, the eye. The flap never heals (which means increased risk of infection and it can flip backwards or tear), dry eye is much worse than it sounds, loss of vision at night really means inability to drive at night, double or quadrupled images...the inability to ever wear affordable contacts or glasses again in many cases because you have flattened your cornea...oh yes, and chronic pain caused by cutting nerves that do not grow back ever as they once were even if you happen to be asymptomatic...loss of contrast and depth perception. I had a friend in college who could not distinguish a glass from the rug it was on after getting cosmetic eye surgery...and she also cannot drive at night ever again even though she is legally "20/20" due to all the visual aberrations. It's really barbaric and should not be done. I love this guy's videos but really...the flap does not heal well or fast, especially when viewed under a more powerful microscope than your regular opthomalogist uses. That's why they'll say the eye looks normal when you have chronic pain and fun house worthy visual issues when you have nerve damage and a distorted cornea shape resembling keratonocous that's cosmetic surgery induced! Really disappointed by this video. This is a bad decision. Your eyes only get dryer with age. Memoblian glands can die and they do not come back. Some people with this surgery need to use eye drops by the minute and can no longer sleep comfortably due to their eyelid sticking to their eye from dryness...hitting their REM sleep cycle and waking up in excruciating pain. If you are considering this, seriously look into it and really consider that you are structurally weakening and compromising a completely healthy organ. Look into the cost of scolera lenses and consider if you want to be buying them for life. Look into a cornea transplant. Are you okay with worse case scenario needing one? Oh and consider the increased risk of cataracts and likelihood of needing cataract surgery increasing. My friend needed it before 25. It's insane this is promoted.

I experienced weird side effects I had the Relex smile procedure in April 2022. I looked at horror stories before I had the surgery but I ignored them and thought there is a very low chance that I will be one of these people who experienced complications. I was wrong, I did experience complications from the surgery. I experienced quiet bothersome side effects. These side effects were persistent afterimages, hazy vision, spots, shadows, sudden blurriness, reduced vision in dim light, floaters, flashes, glare and starbursts. Shortly after the surgery I started noticing I get lots of afterimages whenever I look at bright lights. When I look at bright light and look away I can still see the imprint of the light shape in my vision. I know a lot of people have this but after the surgery I noticed that it is much easier and quicker for these afterimages to form and they last much longer than normal ( over 5 minutes!). I am now much more prone to getting these annoying afterimages whenever I look at bright lights and let me tell you they are quiet annoying since they disrupt my vision. Immediately after the surgery I also noticed I had bothersome floaters ( mostly in my left eye). These floaters are also quiet annoying. They are always there and they are quiet big. I asked the clinic about these two side effects and they said that it is not related to the surgery since they are to do with the back of the eye (the retina and vitreous) and not where they operated which is the cornea. However I find that hard to believe since I never had these problems before the surgery and its a big coincidence that they started happening right after I had the surgery. The fact is laser eye surgery does affect the whole of the eye and not just the cornea. Overall I am not satisfied with the results because of these side effects. I was expecting top notch results for the high fee I had to pay for the surgery. Even though the intended correction has been achieved I still suffer from anxiety and depression as a result of these side effects ( especially the afterimages, hazy vision, spots and shadows).

def not a good surgery. agreed, inherently unsafe. ive had it done as well. def a regret. wish knew what i do now back then. would have decided differently. risk far greater than published. its messed up cause ophthalmologist still promote this surgery, you don't see them doing this surgery on themselves. my vision regressed as well. those nerves are VERY important. not to mention thinning out the cornea. chronic dry eyes which serve as part of the way cornea obtains its nourishment.

My prescription had not changed for over 5 years easily, i wore contacts so i know my prescription well, its on the lens box as well. Now, i regressed to -2.00 and have chronic severe dry eyes. Def a regret for me, and pointless surgery. At least i had healthy eyes and crisp vision with relatively no issues prior to surgery.

It's not worth it. Just keep your glasses or contact lenses. I had PRK done and it ruined my vision. I now have advanced glaucoma due to the steroids prescribe as anti-inflammatory. I'm severely depressed.

Rodrigo Azcárraga I had LASIK 20 years ago and I feel your pain. I was 20 and was just focused on being free from glasses. I have poor night vision(halos, starbursts). I had dry eyes before but seems like that is worse. I was on Restasis a couple years ago and it worked well but stopped for a year. Just got back on it so I am trying to be patient. I’m trying warm compresses and the gland massages this doctor recommended as well as preservative free tears as needed. Just wish I would have never had the procedure. Would pay any money to go back to that day and tell myself no. I went to a very experienced doctor in St Louis but he was very rude and basically tried to avoid and discount things I was telling him. That was the hardest part being 20 and left on my own to deal with a serious situation. I’m hoping the dry eyes improve. I’ve basically just avoided going out at night since it is difficult with headlights. Just sucks to be in the 1% complication range which I believe is much higher. I wouldn’t wish what I’ve been through in the last 20 years on my worst enemy.

Hey Doctor Allen I hear so much about Lasik surgery but I think in my case is more of a Conn's then the pros I'm a visually impaired person the only sees out of one eye the left eye is what I can see out of but I have nystagmus and I have very small pupils that cannot dilate. My doctor told me Lasik surgery will not be good for me because of my eye condition it can go the opposite way my pupils can close up and I can lose my eyesight some wonder if he's right I guess Lasik is not for everyone I live in Scranton Pennsylvania and I go to Northeast eye institute so in my case I have to rely on glasses for the rest of my life I would like to take the chance and try Lasik but I don't want to risk it losing my sight.

What a lovely and INFORMATIVE overview! I'm a 59-year-old man in good physical condition with no known diseases that might interfere with Lasik surgery. Until I underwent Lasik surgery, I had a rather strong prescription (OD: +4.0, OE: +5.0 with a mild astigmatism in OE (-0.75CYL, 90°AXIS) and needed an additional 2.5 for each eye for reading. (I wore rather thick (and expensive) progressive lenses.) I underwent a blade-less Lasik surgery three weeks ago. Everything went swimmingly during the procedure and I've had two post-op consults where the OD (clinician - not the surgeon) said everything is healing normally. Still... three weeks post-op, I'm seeing beautifully up close, but I'm quite blurry with any thing more than 5-8 feet away. There's haloing and haziness at night as well. I'm using my artificial tears (mild-moderate) every couple hours during the day and use the artificial tears (moderate-severe) at bedtime and if I wake up in the night. In the mornings I wake up with my eyes quite dry. The artificial tears DO make things momentarily clearer, but they go back to blurriness a minute or two after application. I'm very happy with my result so far - as I couldn't see much of anything clearly before Lasik. Yet, as my prescription was rather strong, is this distance bluriness a normal part of the healing process and is it just going to take time to get to the point where my acuity improves. The OD said my distance vision WILL improve (the good news), but that with improvement in the distance, my close up vision would decrease a bit (the sad news). But it was explained to me that even with Lasik I would probably still need reading glasses for the small stuff. Does everything sound about right on track? Again... thanks for your insight.

@tonyinbrazil1 Год назад
@@lisacadorette7992 It's been roughly 3-4 years since the surgery and I LOVE the results. I don't need reading glasses and can see pretty clearly up to 15 yards away. It's not as clear as daytime, but I can even drive at night without much blurriness. Of course, it's not like naturally great vision, but it's damn close. Stay calm. Give the healing process six months or so. You'll be happy with your results, too.

I had ALK done then RK to fine tune. Had 20/20 for less than a year. My corneas were wrinkled and I ended up with abrasions, extreme dry eyes, MGD, years of not being diagnosed correctly, tear duct plugs that dislodged with one partially staying in and causing an infection that needed to be flushed out, sanding of one cornea, now kind of wearing scleral lenses that I hate so I mostly wear glasses and my eyes hurt all the time, I will never see well again or be comfortable in light or sun. Don’t do this surgery, it’s not worth the potential side effects.
