For this latest 10-minute Challenge, I'm tying grabbing my 5wt and a time-tested woolly bugger and fly fishing on Roaring Brook in Hartford County, Connecticut.
Can I manage to get into some trout in a mere 10 minutes? Watch and find out!
Roaring Brook is a stream of moderate proportions that meanders mostly through the woodlands of Glastonbury on its way towards a confluence with Connecticut River about 40 miles upstream of Long Island Sound. As a state-designated Class III Wild Trout Management Area, it offers a fishery with a mix of wild, stream-born trout that is supplemented each year with hatchery fish.
Enjoy the video, folks, and let me know in the comment section what your experiences have been on Roaring Brook and what other places you think I should feature on the channel.
As you're watching this, I'm prepping to film my Christmas episode and I'm hoping everything works out on the river in the coming week. Time will tell!

I know this brook vary WELL. With more time to explore it you'd love the place. Many, many wild trout here as well. Shame you didn't have the time.

Eric Schofner oh I fish Roaring Brook at least twice a year and always enjoy myself. Like I mentioned in the video, “I love this brook” haha, I just had limited time on this particular outing. As a Class III WTMA, there are of course some wild fish. But it’s likely that many of what seem like wild trout were actually stocked as fry. I asked CTDEEP about wild trout streams via email earlier this year and they were very kind to provide some interesting answers. Among them was the following: “Please note that Class 2 and Class 3 are both stocked with fry and/or adult fish to supplement the wild fish that may be there at very low levels. This gets confusing to many as the fish stocked as fry (1-1.5 inches) grow in the stream and will be indistinguishable from a wild fish as they grow. This has caused some confusion about the true number of ‘wild’ fish in any particular Class 2 or 3 stream. In many cases, if we were to stop stocking fry, within a few years, only the wild fish would remain and these would be a mere fraction of what people were accustomed to catching.”

The spot you caught the first fish is where I go all the time. I catch brook trout and rainbow trout from there.

I've never fly fished or caught a trout but I live super close to this spot, guess I'm going to have to give it shot.

Can you do a breakdown of your gear for both small and larger rivers? What gear, brands, and products do you recommend?

ck647 I’ve been considering some content along those lines and some is certainly on the way in 2020. (As far as brands, I actually use pretty cheap/rag-tag equipment, so I presume most folks wouldn’t be too interested. Line is probably the only area where I try not skimp).
