Fun fact: conan was playing the drums before the guitar, but decided to switch to the guitar because he also wanted to sing. He gave his drum kit to his fellow Harvard student, Damon kurokowski, the drum player of the band galaxie 500. And so one of my favorite comedians helped one of my favorite bands happen. Thank you Conan.
I love this crazy shit. It was so off the wall and hilarious. Max was the best. I can’t believe they made someone as talented as him go for such insane bits.
I could never wrap my head around why Max, legendary drummer of the E Street band, would be goofing off with Conan on late nite TV. It used to come on MSNBC channel on DSTV in South Africa, I started watching in 2004. After about a dozen episodes, I got my answer.
I remember when this first aired, my brother and I were so impressed that Conan could actually play the drums (my brother's a percussionist). This was before we knew how skilled he was on the guitar, but yeah, I have fond memories of this bit.
Eh, he's not that skilled on the guitar. He may look impressive to people who don't play at all because he is usually backed by a band (in his tour for example) and that he plays simple stuff. His guitar level is at most a high level beginner or a low level intermediate player. You can tell by just looking at his "solos" in some of the clips he does. His bends and fretting techniques are horrendous and that's a sign of a beginner.
@@gamemechanic4919 Yes, bends/vibratos are like the basic technique barometers to tell if someone's a beginner or intermediate, because it's so fundamental to guitar playing that if you want to be good at anything you have to master those first. He may have played the guitar as a hobby for 30+ years but he can still be a beginner, as are the vast majority of people who play guitar as a hobby. No need to get butthurt over a simple observation based on facts, your feelings are not important to anyone but yourself.
Conan and Max almost had the same energy, to a point that Max can even outdo Conan's charisma. However, Andy brings out a different softer side to Conan but still quirky and witty. That's why Andy came back while Max left. Or maybe because Max doesn't want to leave NYC for LA and Andy was already in LA.
I read that Max had or has a lot of real estate and business dealings in New Jersey and didn't want to give that up. He was also anticipating more tours with Bruce and it was hard to have two big jobs at the same time.
what happened to them? did they just need to cycle through a different band or did something actually come up? edit: nvm, the comment literally under this one has a thread that quite literally explains why he didn’t wanna keep doing the show
Honestly, Max could do a talk show in NYC if Bruce disbands the band for good since they might not be in top form as time passes. Max can talk with other musicians or have some energy like he had here.
When Andy returned to do the Tonight Show, the show just wasn't as funny, and the continuation from that on TBS as well. Max and Conan had great chemistry.
@@Mike-nf6nf Joel conan and max was a great combo tho I still like andy but its just not the same without the OG late night crew. Alltho they did get jordan slansky
