I agree with Waleska. I was born in the Philippines back in the 90s and Latin American music was prevalent up until my generation growing up in early 2000s. I grew up singing and dancing to the songs of Ricky Martin, J.Lo, Shakira, and even Thalia. It was about 2010-ish that KPop started to get popular in the Philippines.

Filipinos ALWAYS EXPECT her to sing Spanish songs. OBSERVE her body movements while performing. That's her TRADEMARK. Hips swaying and bending side to side. Most POSSIBLE persons to relay your intention of meeting Pilita would be JAYA or GARY VALENCIANO.

She was also married to someone from Paraguay for many years and would do shows & concerts together. His name was Amado del Paraguay. They ended up splitting up after many, many years together as he went back to Paraguay. He's passed away several years back. Our concerts were with him & Pilita doing duets while he played his classic flamenco guitar.

MENUDO was also famous here in the Philippines...and so many LATIN AMERICAN singers...like Julio Iglesias, his son Enrique Iglesias has Filipino blood, Bruno Mars also has Filipino blood, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Selena, Gloria Estefan and many more...Cebu was one of the few islands discovered by Spanish explorers in 1521...so Christianity started in the Philippines during this times too...majority of the people here are Roman Catholics...and yes Cebuano dialect has a lot of words which are originally Spanish...Spanish Language was still a part of university/college subjects even in the early 1990s...and some INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE MAJORS still have Spanish classes included in their curriculum...even our family names are usually in Spanish like de la Cruz, Reyes, Cruz, Trinidad, San Juan, Herrera, Montebon, Ledesma and many more...and so with our arts and culture is also having been inspired and influenced by Spanish style...we were under the Spanish colony for 333 years until Americans came here after the Spanish-American war...so after that Filipinos learned American-English system...they also introduced the public school system and also helped us our government system too...Thank you Waleska for featuring our brilliant Filipino Talents...because of you vlogs we became known to the world even if our country is not that huge but we are people who really take MUSIC as part of our LIFE...

Spanish was still compulsory taught in Philippine Schools until the late 80s until all important documents in the country were all translated in english that Spanish was abolished in all schools. But with the recent boom in the BPO call center industry, some of the younger generation are now attending spanish language schools to get better chances of getting hired for bilingual jobs in BPOs.

Spanish curriculum in Philippines education system: not just in the 80’s but I’m sure all the time up until the 80’s or even 90’s until it started to dwindle down. I left the Phils in ‘83 and all my siblings went to schools that required Spanish in HS. Poveda (Teresiana) comes to mind, as possibly a school that had Spanish all throughout the school years, I could be wrong. Remember also that back then up until that time and it may still be the same this day, private schools are combined primary secondary and college in some cases. Or elementary high school and college. My school was one. Waleska the Spanish culture is well rooted in the Philippines. So really the songs and culture is still prevalent now but it’s always been, not just in the 70, 80, 90’s. I think Filipinos have become more nationalistic after the Marcos regime in the 80’s so Filipino and Tagalog is much more used now versus during my time in the 80’s and before when it was more common to speak English (and a little bit of Spanish). The millenials and later generation are embracing our own “Filipino” -ness. Ps. I was born and raised in Metro Manila, not in Cebu. Exclusive schools are mostly in the city. Cebu in general is considered a province.

Not MOST Filipinos speak Spanish. VERY VERY FEW Filipinos speak that language. And maybe less than 5% of Pilipino words are Spanish. I took Spanish in High School and College but I can’t speak it, but I understand a little. Probably Chavacano has more than 50% Spanish in their dialect.

Spanish was removed from the curriculum in early 90's. I graduated in 1991 and we are the last batch who had Spanish subjects in college, I think the last one, Spanish 4 was in 1990. We had 4 semesters of Spanish. And I really loved it. I had a Spanish grammar book. Our teacher was so strictl, we had to speak Spanish only in her classes. I intended to master the language but sadly almost forgotten much of it 😊 I hope it will be revived, even just an elective subject, considering that in today's globalized environment, Spanish is still one of the most spoken languages in the world along with English.

Pilita Corrales is actually came from the generation of Spaniards who came to Philippines in 1521. Both her parents are Spanish who were born in Cebu, she grew up in Cebu that's why she is fluent in the local Cebuano dialect and she is very fluent Spanish (she speaks fluent Spanish than Tagalog). The Visayan islands is home to a lot of Spanish mestizos who still some speak fluent Spanish. Broken Spanish was once spoken in the province of Cavite and Zamboang hence the dialect "Chavacano". I almost had Spanish class back when I was still in college, but it was abolished from the curriculum before the start of the semester in my first year. 😊
