This film was produced by an American Film Company and is an excellent documentary on the history of Laura Ashley over several decades. From when Laura and Bernard met right through to when they died. They are both buried at the church cemetery in Carno, Mid-Wales, just a few hundred yards from the factory where they first started their empire.

Oh my !!! I opened her third shop in the United States, located in Georgetown. Her son David, basically hired me and I had never worked for a company that exhibited so much kindness. We were given lunch twice a week ( A tradition that carried over from her UK shops, to ensure that the staff was fed ). The female staff were given a dress each month, "their allotment" .. Mrs Ashley trained me to operate a "Telex" machine, stating that "she had been an operator at age 13 during the war". Those were fun and exciting times !!!!

I worked at the Georgetown (3213 M Street NW) location from 85 - 88. I would like to say I had a wonderful time working there but the General Manager "Grace" was a dreadful bully and almost everytime she visited our location she had a wicked commitment about me, so I spent a lot of time in the back of the store cutting swatches or in the dressing room making sure that the customers needed a petticoat to go with their "leg of mutton" dress.

SO proud to say I worked for this wonderful company. We used to get a free allotment for dresses and after a while it went to 40% off for employees. Loved working with the fabrics and home furnishings and help set the window displays. It truly was my favorite job😊

I believe DELL computers did same back in 80’s. Austin Texas. Also, I believe Tesla Austin Texas has something by this way to it’s employees. Texas Instruments offered a nice package for their employees in 70’s/80’s if I am not mistaken. There are a few companies who do offer this but it is not the norm. *of course fact check my info, I may be incorrect but I believe I knew people who worked for Dell who became millionaires over shares. It was a big talk in Austin in the 2000’s. I knew of people who worked Texas Instruments and same~millionaires from shares and employment.

I enjoyed this SO MUCH! I didn't hear of Laura Ashley until the 1980's. I loved the prints and how feminine they are. I wanted my home to look sweet, so I went with Laura Ashley. Trends have changed a lot since then, but I will always love the delicate florals, small prints, polka dots and stripes. I think I'll just go back to that. It's where I'm the most in my own element. Thank you to the Ashley family!!

I remember being age 24 visiting England in mid 1980's & seeing my 1st Laura Ashley store front - was like seeing the gates of Heaven. No castle, cathedral, or landscape gave me a bigger thrill. Could only afford 1 purchase - a pretty, full, mid calf length skirt with pinstripes & vertical rows of tiny blue flowers on a white background - which i still have buried in a closet but cant fit into anymore. I recently discovered the online USA store & bought some items. Arrived to my door with same label & nicely packaged but not the same. Sadly, had to realize I am not the same, the times are not the same & the brand is not the same. But I still have my memories of everything vintage 1980's Laura Ashley. Simpler times. 💐

Wow. I have always LOVED Laura Ashley prints - both to wear and for home decor, but I never knew the woman behind the brand. Now that I know a bit about her, I like and admire her so much and I'm so sorry she is gone. At one time, in a mall nearby, there were three Laura Ashley stores - Laura Ashley (clothes), Laura Ashley Home, and Laura Ashley Mother and Child, where you could buy matching outfits for mothers and daughters. I remember I bought matching jumpers (American sense of jumpers, not sweaters) for my sister and her youngest daughter and she loved them. I do wish those stores were still there. I agree with her about wanting to be feminine and wanting to express the values of the past. Loved this video.

We desperately need quality dresses made from the wonderful cotton she used, as a 52 year old woman I find it incredibly difficult to find good everyday dresses that flatter the fuller figure, you either pay an average price for viscose rag or it’s off the charts expensive. There is definitely a niche for this sort of sustainability.

Always loved Laura Ashley fabrics - this makes me love them even more. I just wish the fabrics were still made in Wales...I miss the days when items, reflecting the culture in which they emerge, are actually made within that very same place and by the people who live and work there...I suppose I'm not a fan of globalisation. But what a wonderful documentary. Well written and told. I'm sorry her life ended too early.

I have to admit that I adored Laura Ashley back in the 80s and 90s. I bought my wedding dress at the Laura Ashley store in North Star Mall, San Antonio, Texas in 1986. I was gaga over her prints and wallpaper. I never went whole hog because it was pricey, but I bought things like wall paper border (remember that?) with veggie prints for the kitchen and the one printed with stocks (I love that flower) and a shower curtain for my bath. Plus I had boys and a husband so I had to think of them and not go too flowery. Thanks for sharing this video. Laura Ashley was so special.

This was absolutely wonderful. Things I am tired of: Minimalism, people who scoff at tradition, people who think living well and caring for your home and family is something to look down on and refer to it as "living in the past", people who hear that a family reads the Bible on Sunday and insultingly say "they actually did this" as though it were wrong or stupid. I am tired of the color gray. I am tired of a piece of foam thrown on a platform with a gray comforter on it being called a bed. I'm tired of Ikea. I am tired of clothes on women that only the cheapest prostitutes in the worst part of a city would have worn before the year 2000. Am I the only one?

Well, I'm with you. Since the panademic, I feel like I've been transported to another planet, filled with pessimistic, argumentive people who believe that their opinions are absolute truths. I believe that this "living in the past" philosophy comes from angry younger people who secretly envy caring, happy families with traditions. I'm not sure why they don't like fine china, family heirlooms, etc. and I don't care! If they want to live in "cellblock chic," have at it! Living in a monochromatic, empty space would make me depressed. Contrary to popular beliefs, Ikea is NOT the only furniture store on earth, and people still use wallpaper. Ikea maybe sleek and chic, but it made still made of partial board/ press board. I always retort, " any furniture you have to assemble yourself, is cheaply made." Watching this documentary made me nostalgic for a world with quality, a world that seemed more romantic, more accepting and more stable and definitely prettier. So, if I'm living in that past, thank God!

What Laura Ashley and her family created was truly amazing, but unfortunately, following a fall downstairs at her daughter's home, Laura Ashley passed away. Soon after, the Company went public and a bunch of irresponsible, ruthless managers came into the Company . They reaped the benefits and sadly destroyed the Company and the shares tumbled. An internal investigation took place headed by a former Deputy Divisional Commander CID. The name of the investigation was "Operation Laura". I was a member of the investigation team and what we witnessed was horrendous. The true findings of "Operation Laura" was never made public as we were told if it was, it would ruin the Company's image. The ruthless Managers were eventually sacked, one by one. But unfortunately, such was the damage done, the Ashley family eventually ended up losing everything and thousands of jobs were lost. The shops and factories closed down and that was the end of the Laura Ashley family enterprise. Countless Laura Ashley employees including myself still have shares in the Company which are now deemed to be worthless. A very sad end to such a successful Company and an example that you should trust no one when you're dealing with a high profile business.

I read about Laura Ashley in my younger days from magazines. When I was in my late 20's I saw my mother's window curtains n I said to myself...that looks just like Laura Ashley's style... The delicate floral curtains softly flowing the breeze....and my mother didn't know who Laura Ashley was.... Laura Ashley was not known in Malaysia then and my mother didn't speak English. I love Laura Ashley style of furnishing...

I knew nothing of Laura Ashley, and there was no 'Tiny Home' decades ago, when I bought Laura Ashley fabric by the yard, and decked out my 16 foot Aloha trailer with the blonde wood paneling, fabric, and painted wooden Swedish fitting. Ah, it was beautiful... and it made me feel so good to know today, that the Welsh workers were given lots of L.A. stock when they went public! 🙂

Love at first sight - Laura Ashley was my soul mate in fashion. I really enjoyed her...everything (Wall paper, clothes, perfume, paint colors, the lovely book about her home designs..)!

Back around 1980 I purchased two blouses and two skirts at the Laura Ashley store in Lenox Square in Atlanta. One skirt was a summery cotton print in blue, yellow, and white. The other was a red floral print in cotton pinwale corduroy. Both blouses were white cotton with tucks and a small ruffle at the neck. I kept those pieces for years, and wish I still had them. During that same time I also liked the "prairie look" garments designed by Jessica McClintock and Gunne Sax, mostly for casual wear. I wore Jessica McClintock's white flower fragrance for years, so light and feminine.

McCall's Pattern Co. featured sewing patterns for Laura Ahley designs. Not only were the designs beautiful, they were very well drafted. I have been sewing for over 50 years now, and I don't think I have used better drafted and designed patterns.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story of fashion icon, Laura Ashley. She made "robin's egg blue" interior paint a 'thing'! Alas, I live in an apartment these days but still desire to create a living room with "robin's egg blue" walls and either a deep red velvet or moss green velvet sofa, white gauzy ceiling-to-floor curtains, and a pink miniature rose garland hanging in each corner of the room__divine! 💖🙌🙌🙌😺

I have very clear memories of my female friends in their Laura Ashley dresses with Pearls in the mid 1980's and thinking how beautifully feminine they looked. Whenever I think bank to those times in my minds eye that's the image my memory still retains. One could almost place it along side William Morris from the century before ... Wedgwood blues and pale British countryside greens , refreshingly old but modern - femininism at peace with itself. Somewhat middle class but a strong moral individualism. The juxtaposition of smelly punks . Nothing like either around now ...

This is the epitome of an honest cottage industry evolving in to greatness. It's how all businesses should evolve. I never knew how truly romantic and interesting the story behind it was. It's such a shame they killed the proverbial golden goose by buying from the Far East. It's a very inspiring tale, nonetheless.

Still have my beautiful white cotton (very affordable)Laura Ashley wedding dress from the shop in Leeds from 1987. I was a Canadian gal marrying a Brit. in Ontario, Canada. My wedding dress still in perfect condition now hangs in my house in Whitehorse,Yukon. I still love it. Perhaps my grand daughter will use it again one day...

I adored Laura Ashley fashions, fabrics and designs. I bought so many of her things and her cotton maxi skirts were about £4 back in the 70’s.I loved them and had at least 5 and it was my first port of call as a teenager shopping in Bath. What a wonderful story and a wonderful lady.

I had the comforter with little pink and green flowers on one side and pink pinstripes on the other with the matching pink stripe sheets back in 1987 for my freshman year of college. Loved it so much that I used it my sophomore year as well. Happy memories.

I adored Laura Ashley clothes and home items during the 1980's and into the 1990's. They were pricey, so I couldn't indulge much as I wanted to, but my babies slept on cotton LA crib sheets (Canterbury Bell and Mary Mary, respectively). Our bedroom was decorated in the lavender Louisa range, and we had LA Emma wallpaper in the kitchen for several years. It seemed to me that after LA passed away, the company lost its signature "Jane Austen" style. I bought April Cornell hand-blocked cotton dresses for my little daughter and myself, but they weren't quite the same. I still love that style of printed cotton. Thank you for the lovely documentary, full of "insider info!"
