Laura Ashley was a Welsh fashion designer and businesswoman. She originally made furnishing materials in the 1950s, expanding the business into clothing design and manufacture in the 1960s. The Laura Ashley style is characterised by Romantic designs - often with a 19th-century rural feel - and the use of natural fabrics.

I could never afford anything from Laura Ashley but I loved going into her shops and just looking and touching things. Everything was so beautiful. I felt like I was in a different world in one of her shops.

As I was born in the early 50’s, Laura Ashley was always a feature in my life . My wife wore her clothing range, we decorated our various houses in her wallpaper and paints and in the latter years of the company, we bought the furniture, lighting, crockery etc.. Our style was heavily influenced by Laura Ashley and it was sad when the company lost direction and folded. Another excellent video Alan. 😊👍🏻

Wow! That's amazing. It seems like you. Andrew are one of her biggest admirers and also one of the reasons she was so successful. She would be very pleased to hear this. I have no doubt and the one thing that impressed me about her was what a very down-to-earth and genuine person she was which is not always the case when they're so successful. Thank you for the fantastic comment and for encouraging me. All the best, alan

I was the same….beautiful clothes, or fabric to make your own creations. They also used to have a basket outside the store where I lived with fabric scraps, which were perfect for my patchwork hobby. Bright colours, tiny sprigs of flowers, etc…I made so many things thanks to Laura’s visions….was so taken by her and loved her name Laura I always planned to call my second baby by that name, but that was an Andrew! My third and last attempt failed miserably too, and although I called my bump Laura all the way through, when born Laura became Richard. But his pram and cot both had beautiful hexagonal shaped patchwork quilts on tge in Lauras’ fabric scraps. It was a terrific day when her accident was on the news and we lost her. There has never been anyone since with the same colourful yet comfortable vision and resulting creations. 🕊️🌹🫶🙏 Godbless you Laura and Thankyou for so much. 👏👏👏👏. Thank you too Alan for taking us here to pay our respects. 👍👏👏

Fancy this popping into my feed completely out of the blue. I worked in one of her soft furnishing factory's, in Oswestry, as well as 2 other members of my family. Times were not easy and as we were single mothers sharing a property, caring for other family members and bringing up 7 extended family children, Ashley fabrics, which were readily available to all staff, were a very important aid to our stretched budget. There were regular sales, once a month, when we could buy bin bags full of end of roll mixtures at £1 a go, and what came inside them were generous amounts of first class quality fabrics. As well as that we could buy ends of rolls at rediculous prices and our families as well as ourselves, we're kept well dressed because of it. Our home, an old Victorian vicarage, was bedeecked with curtains, bedding and other items which we made ourselves and in fact, 8 am still using some bed sheets that I made back their still in good nick and by far my favourites to sleep between. Im so glad you posted this video, really interesting, though I knew of her fatal accident, but not all of the rest you've mentioned. She certainly made a huge difference to my own and my large family's lives, and to many others who worked for her in this district. Thank you God Bless 🙏🏻 💖

@@MotorHomeBeepBeep I fact your video sparked a very interesting train of thought, an unexpected expansion of what has been almost a lifelong interest in reincarnation and our past life connections, the Why's and wherefore's of how we come to be as we are in this world. It seems that Laura Ashley has been right under my nose as an obvious pointer for many years and knowing what I do know (much of which has come from first hand experiences, flash backs of memory etc,) about the subject, I can hardly believe that I failed to consider this sooner, when she played such a vital part in my family's growth and development. Appart from that, her grave sight gave me a deep impression of her having been abandoned, which seems dreadful and extremely sad, in light of how many lives she has actually touched, and I intend to make my own efforts to visit it,though I'm not young or in great robust health, but will solicit some help, and subsequent interest, from family members, and it seems important, even those who have passed on from this world, can be in need of our caring attention, There are no coincidences and I'm really thankful to you for making and sharing the video. God Bless you 🙏🏻💖

I enjoyed this so much, she was an inspiration to me, I loved everything about the styling, my last house was completely Laura Ashley, and two rooms in this one also. Thank you so much Alan I've been ill for a wee while so not been on for a while, great to be back. such a tragedy also that the company went high end and thus very costly to buy things, mainly because of the USA. A wonderful woman tragically gone too soon, as I believe she had much more to give. God Bless xx

I have said this over and over again, as someone who has ensured his parent's graves are well kept from 1996 but you, rarely, see any sign of any visits from these famous people's descendants. Bernard over died 15 years ago and they had children and grandchildren and yet nothing. Once you're gone. You're gone and out of sight out of mind it appears...

@@Isleofskye as a child I often thought it strange that my mother and later my father, rarely visited their parents' graves. In adulthood, I began to understand. My own parents were cremated. My teenage daughter (pictured) was also cremated.. so, no graves to visit. But as I said, the soul and spirit depart these temporary, earthly vessels at death. Strangely, I have a passion for old cemeteries..but more to do with the historical aspect. But when you think about it, we only have gravestones still standing from probably the earliest, 1600s.. so many people before then with no existing grave markers.

@@donnasmyth45 Hello Donna. It was only when my Mum died and was cremated in 1996 that I realized the lack of a gravestone for a cremation. I left her ashes in the Funeral Directors for 14 months and was told by my local Council that they were going to put some gravestones for crenations at the end of some rows of graves and they would let me know and that is what happened in 1997 and I still maintain it now. I won't go into details , but the headstone was dropping back and it would be costly to adjust the headstone until the gravedigger said he would do it privately for £40 and it is like new now:)

As always Alan, it's so heart warming to listen to your words of wisdom complementing all your wonderful videos! So enlightening your tribute of Laura Ashey... and, after reading your comment section, a much loved and admired woman by all. I've always had a soft spot for Wales and her people: I was fortunate enough to have Welsh neighbours as a "little'un" back in the 1960's. They were like a second family to me... I still miss them. That's why now knowing Laura's early life in Wales brings me an affinity to this lady - all thanks to you Alan. Lastly, and I'm sure I speak for all your viewers, these longer videos of your work are a pleasure to view! A big hug to you and all.. Thank you so much Alan.

Hello Leo what can I say I've just fallen backwards us. Super kind on this left. I don't deserve the phrase. The one thing is that in life you tend to gravitate towards people and I do think she was a wonderful lady. I watched quite videos and she was a great combination. She had strength if needed but at the same time she was religious which I'm not personally but she just wanted people to have a lovely life and be comfortable and that is what she achieved in her way through a fashion shops which were good quality and value. She's one of those people that I don't think anybody had a bad word for and I so much enjoyed getting to know know a while researching the video and thank you ever so much for your encouragement. Isn't Wales a beautiful country? Best regards, alan

She was strong, honest and very caring. Caring. She just wanted people to have a nice life with comfortable surroundings and that's what she was all about. Even their staff praised her. One of those people that she just met everybody's life better and that's why she was so successful as a byproduct. Very big hug to you. Much appreciated. I'll watch out in the future. Alan

That was beautiful Alan. I was a huge Laura Ashley fan and particularly loved her patchwork pieces (cushion covers - sadly unfinished and likely to remain so so many years later.) My biggest delight was transforming a cosy nook bedroom many years ago using her wallpapers as well as fabrics for curtains and bedding. Cream and terracotta in reversed patterns - I remember it well! Sad to see the neglected grave. That's why I want to be cremated and scattered. Cheerful eh wot? x

Hi Alan what a tragic end to a very talented lady. Funny how Laura started off making cheap lady’s fashions and wasn’t bothered about money but soon went up market when it went to the United states, presumably something to do with her husband then sold it for a fortune after her death. Great insight to this great lady and thanks for bringing it to light. Take care my friend can’t wait till you post another video 👏👏👏👍

Hi Keef I think it got taken out of their control. She was very much into wanting to make good products for a good price but I think her husband was more ambitious and of course when she'd gone the old thing got taken over by cold-hearted business people purely looking at the money. It's the usual thing but she was a lovely lady and it was a pleasure. Thank you for telling me see you Alan

A lovely video Alan and you did her proud. I enjoyed the story as never knew anything about Laura Ashley, so you have enlightened me. It is so true to seize the day as we never know what is around the corner. I lost my best friend to Covid in 2020 and she was just due to retire from her job and was so looking forward to her future. That makes the loss so much more sadder. We have to be in the moment and yet if that moment is not a good one, it will change. You told a beautiful story here and I totally agree SEIZE THE DAY.

Interesting video Alan. Laura Ashley things were never my style and when i did look they were out of my price range. However, nice to have a woman create a business that cared about the workers. She did have a sad end but probably led a full life in her 60 years. What struck me was the fact that her stone looked so stark with just her name and dates. Plus Bernard and Laura were not in the same grave. Maybe some religious reason, seems strange. Enjoyed the video Alan.
