Fun Fact: when you enter the second phase of the Shadow Queen fight, the game secretly rigs a shine slot in your favor to give you a full audience. That's how you seem to get one at a climatic moment.
Oh, that is DELIGHTFUL! It feels so natural it didn't even occur to me that it might be rigged, but it also definitely adds to the dramatic feeling of what is a nicely epic battle.
Playing this as a kid, a lot of stuff definitely went over my head. Still happy to see you enjoyed it. I would highly highly recommend Super Paper Mario. It's a different experience entirely. It doesn't have a lot of the, uh, unconsent-y stuff in it, which helps. But it's also an amazing story.
I seem to remember that there was something in it I really liked, I just don't remember *any* of the details, so I think I will probably give it a try eventually! There are just so, so many games I want to play... (Plus, with my luck, I'll play through Super Paper Mario and then they'll announce a remake with fixed translations, etc. etc., just a few months later!!)
Coming back to this wonderful playthrough after the remake and I can confirm that yes, the rearranged soundtrack Is amazing, and definitely more up your alley, especially some of the sinfs that you disliked in the original. And theres even new tracks I know you said that you wouldn't replay it, but have you listen to some of the new arrangements?
I've heard really good things about it! That's one of the ones that probably inspired Toby Fox and other indie creators, right? I would like to play it eventually!

I've thought about it! It's not a gameplay genre I can easily wrap my head around, unfortunately, and I think I'd be stressed out trying to do well even if the story continues going when you make mistakes. So it could happen but I'm a little nervous about it...

You know, all of my friends are absolutely *obsessed* with that game and I've heard a lot about it, and it sounds absolutely wonderful, but I'm not sure I'm the right player for it! I don't generally love that style of RPG, even if it sounds like BG3 has done everything right with it.
@@LaurentheFlute I honestly thought the same myself as I personally abhore tactical style games but I ended up finding myself loving the game even with its dice roll. You would definitely love the OST for it though
This has been a fun playthrough! Shame I couldn't catch this final part live. The Shadow Queen... In a series packed to the brim with levity and humorous nonsense, the Shadow Queen sticks out among all Paper Mario games as having no redeeming qualities or humorous moments whatsoever. She's evil played completely straight, to the point that it's almost "wrong context" creepy. (Grudus tried his best, but he got flattened by Bowser, reduced to a head by the Shadow Queen, and was called "dude" by his minions.)
Congratulations on beating the game! I see someone in chat already posted a rough translation of the Japanese lines in the poem, so I won't go through a whole analysis here, but I will say that as far as I'm aware there is no officially correct order. My suspicion is that whoever wrote the script for the the original provided the translators with the lines in the order they were written internally, and the official English worked backwards from a translation of the whole. The punctuation on the official English is what gives me this idea, because the Japanese doesn't end any of the lines with either an ellipse or a period, while the official English does. Of course, ultimately that's no more than a suspicion of mine, and I have to wonder whether this whole thing will be revisited in the remake. As for the events of the stream, this conclusion is where I can see the biggest reasons why I would have enjoyed this game so much in the past. Between the fun combat, the way the mechanics really lent into the themes of everything being made of paper and highly theatrical, and the moment when everyone comes together at the end, it all makes for a satisfying conclusion. I'm glad you wound up having fun with the game, and I look forward to whatever comes next!
