LAUSD considering cellphone ban 

How many teachers have been beaten up by students for taking their phones away from them.

This is long overdue. Shut that shite down!

I graduated right before smartphones went mainstream. I couldn't imagine teaching to this younger generation with their faces plastered unto their phones. Im glad i got out of there when i did. Teaching/Learning today must be literally impossible.

All districts should ban cellphones or have a check in box for students phones during class time , from start to finish .Return phones at the end of the day .

Yes good idea phones are used at home and everywhere else all day long with kids nowadays. Schools are for learning you want to get ahold of your kid call the office just like many years before all the phone madness

C/O1999 here. Disrespectful to have beepers out then and having phones out now is total disrespect to the teachers giving out lectures.

We used to get in trouble for passing notes. Imagine if you could text your friend in another class. It must be rampant. It' gotta' suck to be a teacher now.

If PARENTS made their kids leave their phone at home, this wouldn’t be a problem. Parents need to stop this. Teachers should be dealing with phones

Good. Too many unruly and undisciplined children nowadays distracted with devices. Just gotta deal with calling out bullying and hiring teachers that can protect the students.

I teach 3rd grade, and my students often sneak off to the bathroom just to use their phones. Good luck trying to enforce any rules against it. On top of that, there are hardly any consequences for misbehavior these days because the school doesn't want to appear too strict. Unfortunately, this leniency just leads to worse behavior in the long run.

What if a mass shooter comes in how would kids get in touch with their parents?

As a former student and now employee of LAUSD, this needed to happen a while ago!!! It makes it hard to teach if we are always managing the behavior of the kids. A majority of the things the children have access to on those phones is damaging their development in so many ways and it is time we do something about it.

We weren’t allowed to have pagers in school. I don’t know how they ever allowed this to happen. The teachers that aren’t enforcing it are the ones not teaching. Kids don’t need phones.

Phones weren’t that much of an issue 2008-2012 for me in HS but in college we were on our laptops & phones at the same time. Those that thrive will thrive.

when I was in high school back 20 years ago 2002-2006 we couldn't have any electronics on school compass. no flip phones, no cd walkmans, no iPods kinda crazy that they allow kids to have cell phones

Class of 2014 we had cellphones reaching their peak, not at it's peak but reaching there. And we weren't allowed to be seen on campus with them out during school hours.

At least allow phones during lunch.

Honestly people need to get real. We are living in the day and age of school shootings and you want to take phones away from students?? That reason alone kids should have phones. Safety is a huge issue. Using phones in class for social media is another story .

I graduated high school in 2009. Smart phones were fairly new by then. I’m glad I graduated school before cell phones really took off

If they can get rid of social media permanently that will solve 90% of the problem because it's so toxic and dangerous but unfortunately that's never going to happen. Besides kids will find ways to bring a hidden phone to school so I think this “ban” is pointless.

My son’s iPhone has a super neat feature called “screen time restrictions” where I block everything but calls and texts to me during school hours. It’s not like the old days … we now have school shootings frequently. Furthermore since Covid and funding issues, our school has been hiring unqualified staff. It’s literally admitted to in our school board meetings. And that staff has overstepped boundaries on multiple occasions. My son being able to call me in private during his break to let me know, is important to me. There are bad people in this world and guess what, they DO exist in our schools. I have also tried to reach my son through the school number and direct classroom number to no avail in multiple occasions. I will not be comfortable without a direct line of contact to my child, in the world we live in today. Simple use of parental controls on the devices is more than adequate.

This is completely on parents. I see so many kids given cell phones in order to keep them quiet. How are kids not supposed to get addicted to them.

In other districts, this has led to a decrease in bullying and an increase in communication among students. I think it's okay to collect the phones during the school day. Although in the past I've said that students should have them for communication, I think in most cases it's not an emergency, so parents should communicate via the school. If students had more self-control, this wouldn't be an issue, but we can't change the past.

When I went to school fifteen years ago they weren’t allowed to be seen or else they got taken and returned to your parent. Idk why that changed.

Need to put cameras in classes for parents to monitor their kids.

I agree. I teach in la. Phone brings nothing but trouble. It has to be enforced district wide. Please save the students and teachers.

Should only utilize phones during school for emergencies only. That or just call the school office to reach out for the student.

The government should not have to do this. My kids do not have cell phones, and will not. I have a wireless service, but all it does is make phone calls - nothing else. Time for the over use abuse of cell phones to go the way of the dodo.

These kids have to give them up at the door of the classroom in order for this ban to work. Either way these kids are probably gonna just buy a second phone to get around it.

After 911 they let them have them, they haven’t been updated on the policies since. I remember if we had a pager we got suspended back in the days

How would it even be enforced? Will there be offices where students turn in their phones when they come to school and then retrieve them when they leave? That will take a lot of logistics, time, money, and the like. Parents here are complaining that the phones are distracting, but in most all cases the parents bought the phones and are paying the monthly fees, so they're also to blame.

It’s up to the parents is they wants their students to have phones or not. Just worry about your own children and let the rest raised their own. As longest your kids learn and focus don’t mind for the rest. LAUDS is just scared of evidence of what happens at schools when they have no supervision around. Bad reputation for LAUSD, that’s it.

Good!! Ban phones !! I did volunteer hours at a school not to long ago and it’s crazy how most kids are on their phones when they should be engaged in learning ! Just call the office if you need to reach your kids

Yeah it's ridiculous sometimes they may need it but other times they might cheat using it.

If they thought enrollment was bad if they ban phones kids will stop going at all .

We never had cellphones in school in the past . It shouldn't be THAT hard.. 😂😂 to be honest.i wish we went back to Pagers... "Oh, I got a page... I'll call them when I get to a phone"

Good luck enforcing this.. Yander pouches never worked. Every school is severely understaffed to have the office staff help collect phones & return them. The kids will not care about the consequences and will continue to use them. This is the reason why the district phone policy hasn’t been updated since 2011.. it’s not realistic to enforce it or to confiscate phones.

The New Zealand government recently banned all use of cellphones during school hours. The ban is a nationwide one. No students are permitted to use one at any time, including lunch breaks, etc.

Yes! Kids should absolutely not be on their phones in class. Why do they even consider that an option? Leave your phone in your locker! And kids should be actually socializing or at least studying during breaks, not on their phone. If parents feel they’re kid should have a phone for safety reasons, get them an old fashioned phone they can just use to call their parents or 911. They don’t need a phone with any other capabilities in school.

Phones are needed only when kids are walking to school. The phones should be turned off during school. My 8th grader has a phone and never even uses it only to call me he’s at school. He doesn’t even use it at home.

No matter where you are anymore it has become an epidemic of habitual use.

lucky kids, im 30. when i was in school alls you could do was doodle on empty paper when your done with your work.

We’ve done it for years and years and years before cell phones existed. It’s possible as humans to do. It may be challenging at first but the kids will be fine. How about doing something creative to help with the transition like taking stretch breaks every 30 mins or having a quick meditation sesh or doing something creative and constructive in the place of phones. Something to fulfill the need to be on their phones.

I graduated high school in 2012. Cell phones were not half of what they are today and we weren't allowed to have them. They had to be in your locker or at home and good luck trying to hide it under your desk, You're not fooling anyone. I'm always surprised to hear that cell phones are just out and about in school these days.
